EDD claim reopening about to expire mid-week - what happens to my benefits?

I'm in a weird situation with my EDD claim and really confused about what's going to happen. I was laid off last year and collected unemployment for a few months, then found a seasonal job that just ended last week. I reopened my claim online on Monday, but I realized my benefit year actually expires next Wednesday (right in the middle of my second certification week). Does anyone know what happens in this case? Will I only get paid for half the week? Do I need to file a new claim instead of reopening? The EDD website doesn't explain this scenario at all and I've been trying to call with no luck for days.

ur supposed 2 file a new claim when ur benefit year ends not reopen the old 1... u messed up

Oh no, seriously? The system let me reopen it though! Is it too late to fix this?

The previous comment isn't entirely accurate. When your benefit year expires, you'll need to file a new claim, but since you've already reopened the current one, the system will process payments up until the expiration date. After your benefit year ends on Wednesday, you'll need to file a completely new claim - not reopen the old one. You should receive payment for the partial week (Sunday through Wednesday), and then once your new claim is processed, you'd get payments for the remainder of that week (Thursday through Saturday) if you're eligible under the new claim. Be prepared for a possible gap in payments while your new claim is being processed. Make sure to file the new claim as soon as your benefit year expires.

Thank you so much for explaining this! So I don't need to do anything right now, just wait until my benefit year expires on Wednesday and then file a new claim? I was panicking thinking I messed everything up.

I went through EXACTLY this last month!!! It was a NIGHTMARE!! EDD split my week into two payments, but then my new claim got stuck in pending for THREE WEEKS while they "verified my identity" again even though I'd already done the ID.me thing before. I kept certifying every two weeks but just saw PENDING PENDING PENDING and couldn't pay my rent on time. They never tell you about these weird situations on their website and the automated phone system is USELESS!

Oh no, that sounds awful! Did you ever get through to someone on the phone? I'm worried the same thing will happen to me since I'm already struggling to pay bills.

The system's designed to make everything as complicated as possible! I had a similar situation where my claim expired mid-week and I ended up missing out on three days of benefits because the EDD rep I finally reached gave me wrong information. Said I should wait until the following Sunday to file a new claim, but that was incorrect! The KEY is to file your new claim THE SAME DAY your benefit year ends. Not before, not after. And keep all documentation of when you submitted everything because they'll try to blame you if something goes wrong with their system.

I recommend using Claimyr if you need to actually speak with an EDD representative about your specific situation. I was in a similar confusing claim transition and couldn't get through on the regular line for weeks. Claimyr connected me to an EDD agent in about 15 minutes who fixed my claim issues on the spot. Their video explains how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km and their website is claimyr.com. Definitely worth it when you're dealing with time-sensitive issues like this where your benefits are at stake.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've never heard of this service before. If I can't get through tomorrow I might try it since this is pretty urgent.

just wait till u have 2 deal with a HOLD on ur account lol thats when the real fun begins

EXACTLY!! I had a hold for 6 weeks once because they said I "didn't respond to an interview request" that I NEVER RECEIVED! The whole system is designed to make people give up!

To summarize the correct procedure for your situation: 1. Your current reopened claim will remain active until the benefit year expiration date 2. You should receive payment for the partial week (Sunday-Wednesday) 3. File a NEW claim (not reopened) on the day your benefit year expires 4. Continue certifying for benefits as usual 5. Prepare for potential delays as your new claim is processed 6. If you haven't received payment for the second half of the split week within 10 days of filing your new claim, that's when you should contact EDD Be aware that your weekly benefit amount may change with your new claim, as it will be based on your earnings during your most recent base period.

my cousin had this happen and his weekly benefit went down by like $75 on the new claim even tho he made more money during the base period... edd math makes no sense sometimes

UPDATE: I managed to get through to EDD this morning after calling repeatedly since 8:01am. The representative confirmed what @helpful_expert said - my current claim will process payments until Wednesday, then I need to file a new claim that same day. She also put a note on my account about the situation to help avoid delays. Thanks everyone for your advice!

That's great news! Glad you were able to get confirmation directly from EDD. Make sure to certify for the current weeks as normal, and remember to file that new claim on Wednesday. Good luck with everything!
