EDD claim confusion after penalty weeks and part-time job - no benefits and account is empty

Hey everyone, I'm in a really tough spot and could use some guidance on my EDD situation. I lost my job back in February and immediately filed for unemployment. When I applied, I discovered I had penalty weeks to serve from an old claim (apparently I made a reporting mistake years ago). I served those penalty weeks through March and early April, dutifully certifying each time. Here's where things get confusing - in mid-April I managed to land a part-time gig through StaffPro (a staffing agency). I reported this on my certification as required. Shortly after, EDD sent me a letter with a NEW EDD Customer Account Number saying I had filed a new claim (which wasn't my intention - I just reported my part-time work!). The letter also stated that my part-time wages exceeded what my weekly benefit amount would be. Fast forward - the part-time job only lasted about 5 weeks and ended in May. I haven't received ANY certification forms since then, either online or by mail. I'm completely lost on what to do next. Do I need to reopen my claim? Start a new one? Call EDD to fix the original claim? I'm literally down to $8.37 in my bank account, my rent is due next week, and I'm panicking. Has anyone dealt with this weird situation where reporting part-time work somehow created a new claim? What's the fastest way to get this sorted out?

sounds liek what happened is EDD automatically filed a new claim for you when u reported the parttime job, but then determined ur ineligible cuz u were making too much $$$ at the part time gig. Now that ur part time job ended, u need to reopen ur claim ASAP - log into UI online and there should be a button somewhere to reopen claim. Dont start a brand new claim tho!!! That would be a mistake

Thank you for responding! I logged into UI Online but don't see a 'reopen claim' button anywhere. Just a message saying I don't have an active claim. Should I call them instead? I'm worried if I start a new claim like you said it could mess things up even worse.

What you're experiencing is actually quite common. When you reported your part-time work, the system detected a change in employment status and automatically processed it as a new claim (hence the new Customer Account Number). However, since your wages at the part-time job exceeded your weekly benefit amount, you were deemed ineligible for benefits during that period. Now that your part-time job has ended, you need to reopen your original claim. Here's what you should do: 1. Log into UI Online 2. If you don't see a "Reopen Claim" button, you may need to call EDD directly 3. Explain that your part-time work has ended and you need to reactivate your original claim 4. Make sure to mention you still have a balance remaining from your original claim after serving your penalty weeks The system should have weeks of benefits remaining for you based on your original claim. The key is getting someone at EDD to properly reactivate it.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! That makes sense now why I got that confusing letter. I tried calling EDD this morning and kept getting the "we're experiencing higher than normal call volume" message before it hung up on me. Is there a better time of day to call or any tricks to actually get through to a representative?

Not helpful. The person is obviously in a desperate situation.

I went through something similar last year. When you have a new part-time job that pays more than your weekly benefit amount, EDD basically puts your claim on pause rather than closing it completely. You need to contact them to reactivate/reopen your claim now that your part-time work has ended. Unfortunately, calling EDD is an absolute nightmare. I spent three days trying to get through before I found a service called Claimyr that got me connected with an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. It costs money but was worth it for me since I was also down to my last few dollars. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Once you get through to EDD, be very clear that you're trying to reopen your existing claim after your part-time work ended, not start a new claim. Good luck!

Thank you so much! I'm checking out that service now. At this point, I'm willing to try anything to get this resolved. The rent is due in 5 days and I'm getting really desperate.

EDD IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST!!! They did this EXACT same thing to me in 2023 and it took me SIX WEEKS to get it fixed because nobody there knows what they're doing!!! They constantly mess up claims and then make it IMPOSSIBLE to reach anyone to fix their mistakes. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this garbage system.

I think there's some confusion in the responses here. When you have penalty weeks on a claim and then report new employment, the system can get confused. Your original claim isn't closed - it's just that EDD determined you were earning too much at your part-time job to receive benefits during that period. What you need to do is: 1. Do NOT file a new claim 2. You need to contact EDD to explain that your part-time work has ended 3. They need to reactivate your certifications so you can start certifying again 4. Any remaining penalty weeks from before would still need to be served if you didn't complete them all Also, check your EDD account inbox. Sometimes they send important notices there that never come in the mail. Those notices might explain what happened to your claim more clearly or provide instructions.

I did complete all my penalty weeks before getting the part-time job. I'll double-check my EDD inbox now. I think everyone is right though - I need to actually speak with someone at EDD to fix this. I've been trying to call for two days with no luck.

Quick update question: Were you able to get through to EDD? If you're still struggling to reach them, I recommend calling right when they open at 8:00 AM. The phone lines are least congested then. Also, Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to have slightly lower call volumes than Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays in my experience.

I actually tried that Claimyr service that someone mentioned! Got through to EDD in about 25 minutes. The representative was super helpful and explained that I needed to reopen my claim. She processed it while I was on the phone and said I should be able to certify starting this Sunday. She also confirmed that my penalty weeks were completely served, so I should start receiving payments after I certify. Such a relief!

that's awesome! make sure u certify on time every 2 weeks from now on. also remember to report ANY work or income when u certify even if its just 1 day of work

Absolutely! I've learned my lesson about accurate reporting. I'll be super careful with my certifications from now on. Thanks everyone for all your help!
