Expired claim with final week to certify - How to handle transition to new part-time claim?

So my regular UI benefits expired last week (May 12th) after my full year, but here's where it gets weird. When I called the EDD automated line, it says I still have money available to certify for the week of May 13-19! Meanwhile, I just filed a new claim because my employer reduced me from full-time to part-time (only getting about 22 hours weekly now). I received a paper certification form in the mail for the new claim, but I'm already set up in UI Online for electronic certification from my previous claim. Should I submit the paper form for the new claim or just keep using UI Online? I'm worried about messing something up in the system. I've tried calling EDD 9 times today but just get an automated message saying I'm not eligible to certify by phone if I earned wages during that May 13-19 week (which I did at my part-time job). Anyone dealt with this transition between claims before? The timing is so confusing!

ur supposed to keep using ur UI online account for the new claim too. dont do the paper form, it'll just slow evrything down. but u need to certify for that last week on your old claim before it switches over to the new one.

Thanks! So I should certify for that last week online even though my benefit year officially ended? I'm just worried about doing something wrong and then having to pay it back later.

This is actually a common transition issue that happens at the end of a benefit year. Here's what's happening: your benefit YEAR expired, but you may still have some benefits remaining in your claim balance that you're entitled to for that final week. The new claim you filed is separate and won't start processing until EDD reviews your part-time work situation. You should definitely certify for that final week (May 13-19) using UI Online if the system allows you to. After that, the system should automatically transition to show your new claim details once it's processed. You'll likely experience a 2-3 week gap while they review your new claim. The paper form is likely just their standard procedure when you file a new claim, but since you already have UI Online access, you can just continue using that. If the system doesn't show your new claim after 3 weeks, then you might want to submit the paper form as backup.

This makes so much sense, thank you! I was really confused about why they'd tell me I have money left when my benefit year expired. I'll certify for that final week online and wait for the new claim to appear in the system.

I went thru EXACTLY this last month!!! The phone system is so confusingggg. My benefit year ended April 3 but they let me certify for 1 more week too. Just use UI Online for everything, that last week and the new claim both. The paper form is just backup but UI Online is faster.

Oh that's reassuring! Did you have a gap between your last payment on the old claim and your first payment on the new one? I'm trying to budget accordingly.

Yeah there was like a 3 week gap for me while they processed my new claim. They have to review your part-time work and everything. Just keep certifying online every two weeks even if it seems nothing is happening.

I had a similar situation and tried for WEEKS to reach someone at EDD to explain what was happening with the transition between claims. The phone lines were impossible - always busy or disconnecting me. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to a rep in about 20 minutes. They explained that the system can show one final certifiable week even after your benefit year ends, and that it's normal. They helped me understand exactly how to transition to my new claim. Their video shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Seriously saved me weeks of stress and confusion.

Yes, it actually worked for me. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for so long. I got connected to an EDD specialist who fixed my transition issue and explained everything. Worth it for the peace of mind.

Here's what's happening (former EDD employee): When a benefit year ends, the system still allows for certification of the final week if you have remaining balance. This is by design. You should certify for that final week through UI Online. For your new claim based on reduced hours, there are two important things to understand: 1. Continue using UI Online for ALL certifications. The paper form is sent automatically but is not necessary if you have online access. 2. There will be a processing gap (typically 2-3 weeks) while EDD reviews your new claim, especially with the partial employment situation. During this time, keep certifying every two weeks even if no payments are coming through. One critical point: make absolutely sure you're reporting ALL your part-time earnings correctly when you certify. With part-time work, you'll receive partial benefits based on a formula that compares your weekly earnings to your weekly benefit amount. Misreporting hours/wages is the #1 cause of overpayments that have to be paid back.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll make sure to report all my part-time earnings accurately. Do you know if I'll be able to see my new weekly benefit amount somewhere in UI Online once the new claim is processed? My part-time hours vary a bit week to week so I want to understand how it might affect what I get.

Yes, once your new claim is processed, you'll see your new weekly benefit amount in UI Online under the "Claim Summary" section. The partial benefit formula works like this: you can earn up to $25 or 25% of your weekly benefit (whichever is higher) without reduction. After that, each additional dollar earned reduces your benefit by a dollar. So if your new WBA is $320, you could earn up to $80 without reduction (25% of $320), and then each dollar above $80 reduces your benefit by $1.

THE EDD SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN!!!! I had the same issue when transitioning between claims and ended up with an OVERPAYMENT notice 6 months later because they said I wasn't eligible for that final week even though THEIR SYSTEM told me to certify for it!!! Now I owe $450 back. FIGHT THIS and get it in writing that you're supposed to certify for that final week!

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about! Did you ever get it resolved? This is why I've been so hesitant to certify for that final week even though the system is telling me to.

I'm still fighting it! I filed an appeal but haven't heard back yet. EDD is a NIGHTMARE to deal with. Just document EVERYTHING - take screenshots of what the system tells you to do, save all notices, write down dates/times of any calls. You'll need it all if they come after you later!

@OP - Don't panic based on that experience. While EDD systems can have issues, the situation described above is not typical. If the system is prompting you to certify for that final week, it's almost certainly valid. The previous commenter likely had some other eligibility issue that wasn't immediately apparent. As a precaution, take screenshots of your UI Online dashboard showing the week available for certification. But the process of certifying for a final week after benefit year expiration when funds remain in the claim is a normal, programmed function of the system.

Thanks for the reassurance. I'll definitely take screenshots just to be safe. I've been taking notes of all my attempts to contact EDD and saving every piece of mail they send me. Better safe than sorry!
