EDD UI showing 'certify' for weeks I already certified by mail - duplicate certification issue?
I'm so confused about my certification right now. I mailed in my paper certification form on Wednesday for my benefit weeks (July 8-21, 2025), and I got the receipt confirmation that they received it. But when I logged into my UI Online account today, it's showing that I need to certify for those EXACT SAME weeks! Is this normal? Am I supposed to certify twice? Will I get in trouble for double certification if I do it online now too? Or did they not process my paper form yet? I really don't want to mess anything up because I desperately need this payment to come through. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

This happens sometimes when EDD hasn't processed your paper certification yet. The system doesn't know you've already certified by mail, so it's still prompting you to do it online. I'd recommend waiting at least 5-7 business days before taking any action. If after that time it still shows the same message, call EDD to confirm they received your paper form. DO NOT certify twice - it can flag your account and delay payments.

•Thank you! I'll try to be patient and wait a week then. Do you know if paper certifications usually take longer to process than online ones? This is my first time doing paper because my internet was down.

•Ugh that's the worst! The EDD system is so confusing sometimes. I wish they would make it clearer what's happening instead of making us guess.

This is actually quite common with EDD's system. Here's what's happening: When you certify by mail, it takes their processing center about 7-10 business days to manually input that data into their system. During that processing gap, UI Online doesn't know you've already certified, so it continues to show those weeks as needing certification. Some important points: 1. NEVER certify twice for the same period - this will trigger a duplicate certification flag 2. Paper certifications are always slower than online (typically by 1-2 weeks for payment) 3. You can call EDD to confirm receipt of your paper certification 4. Once processed, the prompt to certify online should disappear In the future, I strongly recommend sticking to one certification method consistently (preferably online) to avoid these issues.

•Is there any way to check if they've received your paper certification before calling? The EDD phone lines are IMPOSSIBLE to get through!! I've been trying for days and always get the "we're experiencing high call volume" message. It's so frustrating!

I dealt with this exact problem last month! If you certified by mail and then see the same weeks available for online certification, DON'T CERTIFY ONLINE. EDD just hasn't processed your paper form yet. I called EDD after waiting 8 days and they confirmed they had my paper certification in the system but it was still in the processing queue. The rep told me this is normal and to just ignore the online prompt until it disappears. If you're really worried, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an EDD rep quickly. I used their service last time I had a certification issue and got through in about 20 minutes instead of spending days redialing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

•Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who's run into this problem. I might check out that service if I can't get any confirmation about my certification by next week. Did they tell you how long it typically takes for the paper certification to be fully processed?

I switched from paper to online certification last year and it was the best decision ever! Paper forms always took forever to process and I'd constantly stress about whether they received them. Online is instant and you get confirmation right away.

•Yeah, I normally do online certification but my internet was out for a few days so I had to mail it this time. Definitely going back to online ASAP!

THE ENTIRE EDD SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!!! I've been dealing with these exact same issues for MONTHS and nobody there knows what they're doing. I certified by mail for THREE MONTHS because my account was locked online, and guess what? They LOST two of my paper certifications and I had to appeal to get my backpay!!!! Don't trust anything about their system!!

•While there are certainly problems with EDD's systems, most paper certifications are processed correctly. It's important to keep copies of everything you mail and use certified mail with tracking for important documents. This creates a paper trail that helps tremendously during appeals.

Wait does anyone know if you'll get penalized if you accidentally certify twice? asking for a friend lol

•You won't get "penalized" in the sense of getting a formal penalty week, but dual certification creates a discrepancy flag in the system that requires manual review. This typically causes payment delays of 2-3 weeks while an EDD specialist resolves the issue. In some cases, it can trigger an eligibility interview if the information between the two certifications doesn't match exactly.

Thank you everyone for your help! I'm going to wait a full week before doing anything. If I still don't see any changes, I'll try to contact EDD to confirm they received my paper certification. And I'm definitely going back to online certification next time!

•That's the best approach. Just make sure to keep track of the dates so you don't accidentally miss your next certification period while waiting for this one to process!
