EDD showing 2021 weeks to certify while I'm on a new 2025 claim - what should I do?
I'm totally confused about my EDD account right now! I filed a new claim in January and it got approved. I received my first payment on January 28, 2025. But this morning I got an email saying I had weeks to certify, and when I logged in, I saw my claim summary showing info from a 2020 extension claim. When I clicked 'Certify for Benefits,' it's asking me to certify for weeks from SEPTEMBER 2021 (09/05/2021-09/11/2021)! What is happening? Should I certify for these old weeks or ignore them? I'm supposed to certify for my CURRENT claim this Sunday. I'm worried if I certify for these random 2021 weeks, it might mess up my new claim somehow. Has anyone dealt with this before? Should I call EDD to get this fixed?

This is definitely a glitch in their system. I had something similar happen last year when I filed a new claim - the system pulled up old weeks from 3 years earlier! DO NOT certify for those old weeks from 2021. It could potentially trigger a review of your account or cause payment issues with your current claim. You need to call EDD immediately and have them remove those old weeks from your certification queue. Your current claim should be separate from any previous claims you had.

•Thanks for the warning! I was so confused and almost certified for those old weeks. Do you think this will affect my certification for this Sunday? That's for my current claim and I don't want to miss it.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T CERTIFY FOR THOSE OLD WEEKS!!!! The EDD system is completely messed up and has been for years. I made this mistake in 2024 and it triggered an "overpayment investigation" that took 3 months to resolve! They even froze my current payments while they "reviewed" my case. The EDD computer systems don't talk to each other properly - the old claim system and the new one conflict sometimes. You NEED to call them ASAP before your Sunday certification.

•Oh no, that sounds like a nightmare! I definitely won't touch those old weeks now. I've been trying to call all morning but keep getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and it hangs up. Any tips for getting through?

This is a common UI Online system error that happens when you have prior claims in the system. What's happening is your account is showing both your current claim AND unprocessed weeks from an old claim that were never properly closed out in the system. Here's what you should do: 1. DO NOT certify for those 2021 weeks 2. Continue to certify for your current claim as normal this Sunday 3. Contact EDD to have them remove those old certification weeks 4. Request that they review your account to ensure there are no other pending issues This is something only an EDD representative can fix on their end. The good news is that your current claim should still process normally as long as you don't touch those old weeks.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! That makes sense. I'll definitely certify for my current weeks on Sunday as planned. Just need to figure out how to actually reach someone at EDD now.

I worked as an EDD phone rep until last year, and this is actually a known issue in the system. When you have a prior claim with uncertified weeks (even from years ago), those weeks can sometimes reappear when a new claim is established. The system doesn't automatically remove old certification weeks when a benefit year ends. The technical term for this is a "crossover claim issue" and it requires manual intervention. You need to speak with a Tier 2 specialist who can access the benefit management system to remove those weeks properly. Regular representatives sometimes don't have the proper access to fix this completely.

•Thank you for this insider information! I didn't realize I needed to speak to a specific tier of representative. Is there any special way to ask for a Tier 2 specialist when I call?

I had same problem last month trying to reach EDD!! Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to EDD in like 20 minutes. They bypass the phone system somehow. You can see how it works in their video demo https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km - saved me SO much frustration after days of trying to call myself. The rep I got said this happens all the time with the system showing old weeks.

•Yeah it worked for me! Way better than spending hours hitting redial. The EDD rep was able to fix my claim issues right away once I actually got through to someone.

I need to correct some misinformation here. This isn't just a "glitch" - it's actually related to how the EDD maintains claim history in their database. What you're seeing is likely related to an incomplete certification process from your previous claim that was never properly closed out when that benefit year ended. Here's the technical explanation: When the pandemic programs ended in September 2021, many claims had final weeks that remained in the system in an "actionable" state even though the programs themselves had ended. The system doesn't automatically purge these weeks, and they can reappear when a new claim triggers a full account review. You should: 1. Only certify for current claim weeks 2. Call EDD and specifically ask them to "remove actionable weeks from prior claims" 3. Request they place a note on your account flagging this as resolved This won't affect your current claim eligibility or payments as long as you don't take action on those old weeks.

•Thank you for this detailed explanation! That makes sense since my old claim ended around that time when all the pandemic benefits were ending. I'll use the exact wording you suggested when I speak to them.

This same exact thing happened to me and I DID certify for those old weeks by mistake!!! It triggered a whole nightmare where they put my current claim on hold while they "investigated" why I was certifying for weeks from years ago. Took me 6 weeks to get it resolved and I had to do a phone interview where they asked me all these questions about my employment back in 2021! CALL THEM NOW!!

Update: I FINALLY got through to EDD this afternoon! The rep immediately knew what the problem was when I explained it. She said it's a known system issue they call a "claim overlap error" where old uncertified weeks can reappear when a new claim is processed. She removed those 2021 weeks from my certification queue and assured me my current claim is fine. She said I should go ahead and certify as normal this Sunday for my current weeks. What a relief! Thanks everyone for your help - saved me from making a big mistake by certifying for those old weeks!

•Great news! Glad you got it resolved before it caused any issues with your current claim. This is definitely one of those situations where talking to an actual representative is the only real solution.

•About 2.5 hours total! I called right at 8am when they opened and still had to wait forever. But at least it's fixed now!

So glad to see this got resolved! This is such a perfect example of why it's important to reach out to the community before taking action on confusing EDD issues. The system quirks and glitches can be so overwhelming to navigate alone, but having people who've been through similar situations share their experiences really helps. Your post will definitely help other people who encounter this same "claim overlap error" in the future - now they'll know exactly what to ask for when they call EDD!

•Absolutely agree! This thread is going to be so helpful for others facing this issue. I'm still pretty new to dealing with EDD and honestly would have been completely lost without everyone's advice here. It's crazy how these system glitches can be so confusing but there are people in the community who actually understand what's happening behind the scenes. Really grateful for communities like this where people share their knowledge instead of just leaving others to figure it out on their own!
