Potential identity theft with NY unemployment - what to do after fraud alert email?

I got this really worrying email from NY unemployment yesterday saying there was a suspected fraudulent claim submitted under my name and social. This is freaking me out because I haven't filed for unemployment since 2022 when my restaurant closed. The email had a link to report fraud and a contact number to call. I immediately reported it through their online form and tried calling the number they provided but I've been on hold for like 2 hours before giving up. I've already frozen my credit reports with all three agencies, changed passwords on my important accounts, and set up credit monitoring. But I'm still super stressed about what else I should be doing. Has anyone else dealt with this? What steps did you take? Should I file a police report too? I'm worried about someone collecting benefits under my name and then me getting hit with a tax bill or repayment demands next year.

Yeah this is happening A LOT right now. I got the same email about 3 weeks ago. First step is definitely reporting it to NY unemployment which you already did - good job. Next step is filing an identity theft report with the FTC at identitytheft.gov - they'll give you a personalized recovery plan. And yep, file a police report too - you'll need that documentation later if there are problems. It took me about 5 days of calling before I finally got through to unemployment to confirm they flagged my account as fraud.

Thanks for the info. Did you have any luck getting through on the phone? I'm going crazy trying to reach a human.

Honestly it was impossible until I tried claimyr.com - they called and waited on hold for me, then connected me when an agent picked up. Saved me hours of frustration and got the fraud issue resolved that same day.

Wait is that service for real? Never heard of it. How does that work?

Totally works! You pick which department you need, they call and wait on hold, then call you when they get a real person. Was the only way I could talk to an actual human at unemployment. Worth every penny to get my fraud case handled.

not gonna lie, sounds too good to be true 🤔 the unemployment phone system is basically designed to make you give up

That's exactly why this service exists lol. Check out this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - talking to an agent got my account secured in 10 minutes after days of failed attempts on my own.

Yo I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) after dealing with this exact situation and it was a game changer. They called NY unemployment for me, stayed on hold, then connected me when a real person answered. I was able to talk to an agent and get my account locked so no one could claim benefits in my name. Best money I've spent to protect my identity and avoid future headaches with tax issues.

how much did it cost? seems like we shouldnt have to pay to protect ourselves from fraud 😡

It wasn't about the cost for me - it was about actually getting through. I spent days trying myself and couldn't get past the hold music. The service let me finally talk to someone who could help. Talking to a real agent got my identity theft issue resolved immediately instead of waiting weeks or months.

did you have to give them your ssn or any private info? not tryina get scammed twice lol

Nope! They just make the call and connect you - you only share your info directly with the unemployment agent when they transfer you. They just do the waiting part.

Hmmm...maybe I'll try this. Been calling for 3 days straight with no luck getting through

Dealing with the same thing right now. From what I understand, there's been a massive data breach somewhere and fraudsters are filing claims all over the place. Make sure you also notify your employer! I didn't think of this at first, but they'll get notices about the claim too. My HR department was super helpful once I let them know what happened.

I HAD THIS SAME ISSUE LAST MONTH! So frustrating! Here's what I did: 1. Filed the fraud report online (which you did - good) 2. Got an FTC identity theft report at identitytheft.gov 3. Filed a police report (bring the FTC report with you) 4. Contacted all three credit bureaus to put a 7-YEAR extended fraud alert (different from just freezing) 5. Documented EVERYTHING - save all emails, get case #s 6. Set up IRS Identity Protection PIN so no one can file taxes in your name 7. Got an appointment at the local unemployment office (took 3 weeks but worth it) The most important thing is getting THROUGH to unemployment so they can properly flag your account. After wasting days on the phone, I found claimyr.com which got me connected to a real agent who took care of it immediately. The agent flagged my SSN in their system so no benefits could be paid out on the fraudulent claim. Good luck - this is a nightmare but you can get through it!

This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't even think about the IRS part - that's a really good point. Did you have any issues after getting it all resolved?

Once I got through to a person, things moved pretty quickly. The agent told me they're seeing hundreds of these cases weekly. Just make sure you keep ALL documentation. I even recorded the call with the agent (after telling them I was recording). It's been about 6 weeks now and everything seems fine - my credit monitoring hasn't shown any other suspicious activity.

Sorry this happened to you. The same thing happened to me and I was so stressed I couldn't sleep for 3 days. The worst part is you can never get anyone on the phone 😫

Did you eventually get it resolved? I'm worried this is gonna drag on for months.

I eventually got through by calling right when they opened at 8am. Took 17 attempts over 4 days tho. Stay persistent!

the same thing happened to me. i reported the fraud online but didnt hear anything back for like 3 weeks. finally broke down and used claimyr to get someone on the phone. the agent told me that the online reports are backlogged by MONTHS but when you call they can flag your account immediately. once i talked to a real person they put a block on my ssn in their system and sent me an official letter confirming everything was handled.

That's really good to know, thanks. I'm going to try to call again tomorrow but if I can't get through I might try that service.

This is like the 5th post about this I've seen this month 👀 NY unemployment system is broken af. I think there was a data breach they're not telling us about.

Seriously. There's no way this many people are getting fraudulent claims filed randomly. There had to be a breach somewhere.

My cousin works for the state (not unemployment) and says theyre dealing with a huge fraud spike but haven't gone public about it yet 🤫

not surprised at all. government agencies and transparency don't exactly go hand in hand lol

My wife just went through this. If you filed with unemployment before, check your online account - sometimes fraudsters are getting in by resetting passwords on existing accounts. Definitely change your PIN and password if you haven't already.

Just a heads up - it took me FOURTEEN DAYS of calling to finally get through to someone about this same issue. The online reporting system doesn't actually stop the fraud apparently - you NEED to talk to a live agent who can put special notes on your account and issue a fraud alert in their internal system. I only got through by using claimyr.com after wasting so many hours trying myself.

I've been trying for a week now with no luck. Is that service really worth it? Been hesitant to try it.

100% worth it. I wasted probably 30+ hours trying to call myself. The service had me talking to an agent in less than 2 hours - wish I'd known about it from the start. The agent told me if I hadn't called, the fraudster might have actually received benefits in my name.

Make sure you call the specific fraud number (1-888-598-2077) not the regular unemployment number. They supposedly have a dedicated team for identity theft cases.

Thank you! I've been calling the main number. I'll try this one instead.

That number is just as bad tbh - still impossible to get through 🤦‍♂️

After you report the fraud, make sure you get a copy of your earnings statement from unemployment to verify nothing has been paid out yet. You can request this on the website but I had to call to actually get it. Better to be proactive than find out at tax time someone's been collecting benefits under your SSN.

When this happened to me in February I tried contacting my state representative and they actually helped! Their office has direct contacts at unemployment who can flag your account for fraud. Worth a shot if you're getting nowhere with the phone lines.

That's a great idea. Which rep did you contact? Was it your state senator or assembly member?

Assembly member. Their constituent services person handled everything for me. Took about a week but way better than trying to handle it all myself.

Don't just report to NY unemployment!!! Also report to: - Local police - FTC (identitytheft.gov) - Your employer - Social Security Administration - IRS (to prevent tax fraud) The more documentation you have, the better protected you'll be. Trust me - I've been dealing with this since November and it's a nightmare if you don't cover all bases quickly.
