Ny unemployment asking for proof of weekly certifications - what did you send them?

So I got this stupid letter from the unemployment office in February asking for payment proof which is fine, I had all that. But there's this line that says I also need to send them proof that I certified every week. Like wtf? How am I supposed to prove that? They're the ones who have that info. I wouldn't have gotten paid if I hadn't certified anyway! Makes zero sense. I tried calling about 50 times over the past month but can't get through to anyone. This is for benefits I received back in 2021-2022 after I got let go from my retail job. The deadline to send this stuff is coming up in a few weeks and I'm getting nervous. Can anyone who got this same request tell me what you sent as "proof of weekly certification"? I don't keep screenshots of everything and I don't know how else to prove it. The website doesn't even let me see my old certifications anymore!

I had the same thing happen in december. They want you to literally print out screenshots of your certification history. Obviously we can't do that since the system doesn't keep them that long. I ended up writing a signed letter explaining that I certified every week but don't have the ability to provide proof since their system doesn't save that info. I sent it along with my W2s and bank statements showing the deposits. Haven't heard back yet but that was the best I could do 🤷‍♂️

Thx for the reply. Did you mail it or upload it to the portal? I'm not sure which is better at this point.

I uploaded everything to the portal. Make sure you get a confirmation number and save it! Also took screenshots of the upload confirmation page just in case they say they never got it.

this is so messed up. they should have records of all this already. typical ny unemployment nonsense 🤦‍♀️

After spending weeks getting nowhere with this exact same issue, I finally found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human at unemployment. They called on my behalf, stayed on hold, then transferred me once they reached someone. The agent I spoke with told me that a simple statement saying I certified each week was enough - they just need something in writing for their records. Talking to an agent got my issues resolved so fast after banging my head against the wall for weeks. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this real? Sounds like one of those too-good-to-be-true things. Did they actually connect you?

0 coins

Yeah it actually worked. I was super skeptical too but was desperate after trying for like 3 weeks. They call and wait on hold, then your phone rings when they get a real person. Best money I've spent considering what was at stake with my benefits.

0 coins

wait so someone else waits on hold for you? that would save me literal hours of my life 😩

0 coins

exactly! that's the whole point. they stay on hold so you don't have to. when they get a real person, they forward the call to your phone. saved me so much frustration.

0 coins

sounds like another scammy service trying to profit off desperate unemployed people tbh 🙄

0 coins

nah I get the skepticism but it's not like that. the unemployment system is broken and they're just providing a solution. like I said, talking to an actual agent solved everything for me in 10 minutes after weeks of getting nowhere.

This literally makes no sense. Your right - they would have the records of your certifications. I sent them a letter stating "I certified every week as required by law. As the department of labor has records of these certifications, as evidenced by the fact that payments were issued to me, I am unable to provide further documentation of certifications beyond this statement." They never responded and I assume it was fine. This whole thing is just a fishing expedition to try to catch people who can't respond in time so they can claw back benefits.

0 coins

Thats exactly what im thinking! It feels like they're just trying to trick people into not responding so they can demand money back. I like your letter idea - straight and to the point.

0 coins

thats actually really smart wording. might steal this if you dont mind 😅

Go for it! The whole thing is ridiculous. I've heard they're sending these out randomly to thousands of people.

Omg I just went through this nightmare!! I printed out my bank statements showing all the deposits and highlighted them. Then I wrote a cover letter saying I certified every week as required and that the proof is that I received payments which wouldn't have happened if I didn't certify. They accepted it! Got a confirmation letter last week saying my docs were reviewd and my case is closed. Don't stress too much, they're just going through the motions.

THE ENTIRE NY UNEMPLOYMENT SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! I've been dealing with them for TWO YEARS trying to get backpay they owe me. Every time I call, it's a different answer. Now they want ME to prove I certified? THEY HAVE THAT INFO!!! It's like asking the bank to prove YOU deposited money. I'm so done with this system.

preach!!! 👏👏👏

Have you tried contacting your state assembly person? Mine actually helped get my issue resolved after 8 months of nothing from unemployment.

So here's what I did when I got the same letter a few months back: 1. I wrote a formal letter stating that I certified every week as required, and that the DOL's own payment records confirm this (since they wouldn't have paid me otherwise) 2. I included bank statements showing the deposits coming in regularly 3. I also dug through my email and found the confirmation emails that were sent after each certification (I never delete emails so I had most of them) 4. I sent it all through certified mail AND uploaded to the portal 5. I took screenshots of everything I submitted as proof They approved it about 3 weeks later. If you're struggling to reach someone by phone, I'd recommend using claimyr.com - it's a service that waits on hold for you and connects you to an agent. Totally worth it for issues like this where you need to speak to an actual human. Good luck! The system is broken but you'll get through this.

I definitely don't have the confirmation emails anymore. But the letter + bank statements approach seems to be what most people did. Thanks for the detailed steps!

0 coins

did you seriously have to send it certified mail? that's like $7-8 extra dollars. they really be making us jump through every possible hoop 😑

0 coins

I did certified mail because I've been burned before when they claimed they never received my documents. The receipt gives me proof they got it. But if you upload to the portal that's probably enough - just make sure to save the confirmation number!

0 coins

you cant make this stuff up lol. the DOL is asking you to prove something THEY should already have records of. classic government efficiency at work 🤡

I haven't received one of these letters yet but I'm worried I might. Does anyone know if there's a way to proactively download or save your certification history before it disappears from the system? I'm still claiming benefits and want to be prepared just in case.

0 coins

Start taking screenshots every time you certify! I do this now every single week after getting caught without proof last year.

0 coins

I think you can only see like the last 3 months of certifications in the system. After that they disappear from your view (but obv they still have them on their end). So annoying.

I got one of these letters in January. Called over 30 times and could never get thru. Found claimyr.com thru a friend - they called and got someone on the line for me within a couple hours. The agent told me they're sending these letters out to nearly everyone who got unemployment during 2021-2022. She said a simple statement acknowledging that I certified weekly was sufficient along with any payment proof I had. Apparently it's some federal requirement they have to fulfill, but they're making it way more complicated than it needs to be.

0 coins

So it's a mass fishing expedition like everyone suspected. Typical.

0 coins

Is claimyr really worth it? I've spent hours on hold with these people and ready to try anything at this point

0 coins

100% worth it. I wasted like 2 full days trying to get through before giving up and using claimyr. Got connected to an agent within 2 hours and resolved everything in one call.

0 coins

this is so stupid i cant even. they already have all this information. why are they asking us for it? i bet some contractor got paid millions to come up with this brilliant process. our tax dollars at work everyone 👏

My neighbor works for NY unemployment (not saying which office). She said they're required to verify a certain percentage of claims from the pandemic period, but their systems don't talk to each other properly. So even though they have the certification records internally, the verification team doesn't have access to them easily. It's a total mess and she says even the employees think it's ridiculous.

0 coins

That actually makes a lot of sense and explains why this feels so disorganized. Thanks for the insider perspective!

if u dont respond to this letter they will hit u with an overpayment notice. happened to my cousin and now he has to pay back $14,500. make sure u send SOMETHING even if u just write a letter saying u certified every week.

0 coins

Omg that's terrifying. Did he appeal the overpayment?

0 coins

yea hes appealing but its been 6 months with no resolution. they garnished his tax refund already.

0 coins

The fact that the burden of proof is on US and not THEM is so backwards. They would not have paid you if you had not certified - that's literally how the system works! I wrote a letter stating exactly that, along with my bank statements showing regular payments, and fortunately they accepted it. You shouldn't need to prove something they already know happened.

0 coins

Just to add another success story - I sent them a signed statement saying I certified weekly as required, along with my payment proofs. Got approved without issues. Don't overthink it - they're just checking boxes for some audit requirement.
