NY unemployment asking for proof of weekly certifications - how to provide this?
I just got a letter from NY unemployment requiring me to send proof that I certified weekly for my benefits. I already sent in my employment proof they asked for, but now they're asking for certification proof too?? I don't understand why this is MY responsibility - wouldn't they already have records showing I certified? Otherwise how would I have gotten paid in the first place? The letter specifically states I need to "provide evidence of weekly benefit certification" separate from the payment proof. What exactly am I supposed to send them? Screenshots? Print-outs? I don't even know if I saved anything from my weekly certifications. Has anyone else been asked for this? What did you send as proof? This is so frustrating!

•EXACTLY! That's what I'm saying! Why are they asking me to prove something they should already know?

This is actually a standard request during certain audits or benefit reviews. You can provide proof of weekly certifications by: 1. Taking screenshots from your NY.gov account history (go to "Payment History" section) 2. Printing the certification confirmation emails if you saved them 3. Providing bank statements showing the regular deposits (with other sensitive info blacked out) The system does track your certifications, but during reviews they sometimes require claimants to provide their own documentation as a verification measure. It's annoying but fairly routine.

•Thank you for the suggestions. I'll check my payment history section. I hope I can find something there because I definitely don't have any emails saved from that far back.

•I went thru this last month & it was a total nightmare!!! The payment history section only showed 3 months back for me, but they wanted ALL my certifications. I finally had to call & talk to a supervisor who confirmed they could see my certification history on their end. Took 5 days of calling to finally get someone helpful tho.

This happened to me in January! It's ridiculous they ask for this when THEY are the ones who have all the records! I tried sending screenshots of my payment history but they said it wasn't sufficient because it didn't specifically show the certification process, just the payments. Then I tried calling for DAYS and kept getting disconnected or put on eternal hold. Finally I discovered Claimyr.com which got me connected to an actual agent in about 30 minutes. The agent I talked to was able to print out my certification history and email it to me, and then I submitted that. Problem solved! You can see how it works in their demo: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE But yeah, this whole process is absurd. They're literally asking us to prove we did something on THEIR system.

•Thank you! I might try that service if I can't get through. Did they charge a lot for it?

•It was worth every penny to avoid spending days trying to get through. The agent they connected me with was actually really helpful and explained that they sometimes do these verification requests randomly. But definitely try the regular phone line first - you might get lucky!

To properly address this verification request, I recommend the following approach: 1. Log into your NY.gov account 2. Navigate to the "Unemployment Services" section 3. Select "View Payment History" 4. Look for the option to "Download Certification History" or similar 5. If available, download the PDF document that shows all your certification dates 6. If not available, take screenshots of each page of your payment history If the online system doesn't provide sufficient history, you'll need to contact NYSDOL directly. Include your claim ID number and specifically request a copy of your certification history. Mention that this is for responding to their own verification request. The reason they sometimes request this is to verify there was no fraud. While it seems redundant, it's part of their audit process, especially if anything in your claim raised automated flags.

•Thank you for the detailed steps. I checked my account and there's no option to download a certification history PDF, just payment history. I guess I'll have to try calling them directly.

So I had this same exact issue back in February!!! I tried sending them my payment history but they said it wasnt enough. I called like 17 times before I got through to someone who told me they actually have a form you can request called "Certification Record" that has all your weekly certifications on it. But they won't send it unless you specifically ask for it by that name. The system is DESIGNED to be difficult i swear

•That's so helpful! I'll ask specifically for the "Certification Record" when I call. Thanks for the insider tip!

I'm going through this nightmare right now too. Been trying to call for TWO WEEKS with no luck getting through. The phone system is completely broken. My benefits are on hold until I provide this "proof" of certification that THEY ALREADY HAVE IN THEIR SYSTEM!!! Why are we responsible for providing records that they create and maintain?? I saved every single email confirmation but apparently that's not enough either. This has to be some kind of scam to deny benefits to people who did everything right.

•It's not a scam, but it is bureaucratic inefficiency. Different departments don't always share data effectively. The verification team often operates separately from the payment processing team. One tip: When you do get through, ask them to note in your file that you've been attempting to contact them for two weeks. Document each call attempt with date and time. This can help if they try to penalize you for not responding quickly enough to their request.

hey my friend just went thru this! he said if you go to the unemployment office in person they can print your whole certification history right there on the spot. might be faster than calling

•That's a great suggestion! I didn't even think about going in person. Do you know if I need an appointment or can I just walk in?

To update everyone on this thread: NYSDOL has actually acknowledged this is causing confusion and issued a clarification. The "proof of certification" request is part of their 2025 audit process. What they're looking for is evidence that you personally completed the certifications (not someone else using your account). Acceptable documentation includes: 1. Screenshots showing your login information along with certification dates 2. The official Certification Record (must be requested from an agent) 3. Email confirmations with your claim ID visible You have 30 days from the date of their letter to provide this information. If you're having trouble, request an extension in writing while you continue trying to reach them by phone.

•Thank you for this update! That helps clarify what they're actually looking for. I'll try getting the Certification Record from an agent.

update: i got thru to someone finally! they said we can also write a signed statement listing all the weeks we certified if we dont have other proof. not sure if thats legit but thats what the lady told me

•While a signed statement might be accepted in some cases, it's considered a weaker form of evidence. I'd strongly recommend also trying to obtain the Certification Record from NYSDOL directly, as this carries more weight in their review process. The signed statement should be your backup option, not your primary submission.

Just wanted to update - I sent in my certification history that the agent provided (after using Claimyr to reach someone), and I got confirmation yesterday that my verification was accepted! The letter says my benefits will continue without interruption. So there IS a solution to this, but you definitely need to get that official record from them.

•That's great news! Thanks for letting us know there's light at the end of this tunnel. I'm going to try calling again tomorrow.

FYI I just spoke to someone from NY unemployment (finally!!!) and they said this is part of a MASSIVE fraud investigation they're doing. Apparently there was some huge ring of people falsely certifying for others. She said they're sending these letters to thousands of people, even those who did everything correctly. She also said we're not supposed to send bank statements - only actual proof of certification.

•Thanks for sharing this inside info! Did they give you any tips on what specifically counts as "actual proof of certification"?

•They said the only thing they're really accepting is either the certification record they can generate for you, or screenshots from your account that show your name, claim ID AND the certification confirmation screens. Problem is most people don't have those screenshots from months ago!
