NY Unemployment Email Approved My Claim but Agent Denies It - 5 Weeks No Payment Despite Official DOL Approval Letter

I've been dealing with this ny unemployment nightmare since August 15th. Haven't gotten a single payment yet even though I've been claiming every week like they told me to. Last Thursday I got both a text AND an email saying my claim was approved and I'll be getting paid soon! The email from the New York State Department of Labor literally said "Thank you for your patience. We have determined that your claim can now be paid. If you have not already, you will soon receive a letter in the mail telling you how much you will receive each week. If you provided bank account information, your benefits will be deposited there. If you did not provide bank account information, you will receive a debit card from KeyBank by mail within three weeks." The email also instructed: "It is important that you continue to certify every week to claim your benefits. You can certify for weekly benefits in one of two ways: The easiest way is online. Please go to www.labor.ny.gov/signin and sign into your account. From your 'Account Overview' page, click on the 'Unemployment Services' button, then 'Certify to Claim Your Weekly Benefits Here' and follow the instructions." So this morning I called to check on the status since they owe me 5 payments already. The agent had the nerve to tell me they NEVER sent that email and I'm still "under review"?? I kept asking what exactly was being reviewed and they couldn't give me a straight answer. I literally have the official email from them right in front of me! The header clearly shows "WE ARE YOUR DOL NEW YORK STATE OF OPPORTUNITY Department of Labor" with "Dear New Yorker:" at the top of the message. How can they say one thing in writing then tell me something completely different on the phone? Has anyone else dealt with this kind of confusing mess? I'm getting desperate here. I've been following their instructions to certify every week, I've logged into my account as directed, followed all the steps, and still nothing. Why would they send an official communication saying my claim is approved and then deny it over the phone?

Same crap hapened to me last year! The right hand doesnt know what the left is doing over there. I got that same email then called and they had no idea what i was talkin about. Ended up taking me 2 more weeks to actually get paid after that email.

2 more weeks?? 😫 I've already been waiting over a month! Did you have to do anything special to finally get it moving?

0 coins

Honestly I just kept calling every other day until i got someone who actually knew what they were talking about. Its like a lottery with which agent you get

0 coins

this is why the entire system is broken. different answers from different people at the same agency 🤡

I was stuck in the same situation for WEEKS until I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to a real agent fast. Talking to someone directly got my payment issue resolved in like 20 minutes after weeks of nothing. Best decision I made - my payments started 3 days later. Check out their site claimyr.com or this video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait is this actually real? sounds too good to be true tbh

0 coins

100% real. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after 6 weeks of no money. Talking to an actual human at unemployment solved everything - the problem was they had flagged my account for verification but never sent me the notice 🤦‍♂️

0 coins

another one of these miracle solutions that never work... what's the catch here?

0 coins

No catch - it just connects you with a real agent instead of waiting on hold forever. My back-payments came through right after I finally talked to someone who could actually help.

0 coins

I've seen ppl talk about this on other threads. Does it actually work for complex cases like OP's?

0 coins

Yep! Mine was complicated too - had the approved email but no payments. The agent I talked to through Claimyr found that there was a flag on my account that needed to be cleared manually. Worth every penny to finally get my benefits flowing.

I swear the NY unemployment system is designed to make you give up. Those emails are automated and get sent out sometimes when they shouldn't. Keep calling and documenting EVERYTHING. Ask for a supervisor if the agent isn't helping.

0 coins

Print out the email and take screenshots of everything! I had to fight for 7 weeks to get my payments. The email actually DOES mean your claim was approved, but something is holding up the actual payments. Could be identity verification, could be a random audit, could be a system glitch. The regular agents often don't have access to see what's actually going on with your claim.

0 coins

Thanks for this!! I did take screenshots of everything. Do you think I should try calling again tomorrow and asking for a supervisor right away?

0 coins

YES! Ask for a tier 2 specialist or supervisor. The frontline people are just reading scripts half the time. And call early - like right when they open.

0 coins

Ok so this is actually a known issue with their system right now. The approval emails are going out automatically from one part of their system while the review flags are still active in another part. Had the exact same thing happen to my brother. Try asking specifically if there's an "identity verification flag" or "earnings verification" needed. Sometimes they don't even tell you what documents they need until you specifically ask.

0 coins

Omg thank you! I'll specifically ask about those flags when I call back. Did your brother eventually get his money?

0 coins

He did! But only after sending in his ID docs a second time. They claimed they never received the first submission 🙄

Listen here's what you need to do. The system is totally fucked but there's a way through: 1) Call EVERY DAY until you get someone who actually knows what they're doing (maybe 1 in 5 agents) 2) When you call, immediately ask if there are any "holds" or "flags" on your account - this is key language 3) If they say you're under review, ask SPECIFICALLY what documents they need 4) Document every call - get agent ID numbers if possible 5) If all else fails, contact your state assembly person's office. They have special contacts at unemployment that can push things through. I went through this exact nightmare in April and only got movement when I followed these steps. Also, if you're having trouble even getting through on the phones, check out claimyr.com - it's a service that will get you connected to an agent without the wait. Talking to a real human is the only way to fix these problems. Don't give up! The system is designed to make you frustrated enough to stop trying. Keep pushing and you'll get your money.

This is solid advice. I'd add: when you talk to an agent, ask them to put notes on your account about your call. Sometimes that creates a paper trail that helps.

contacting my assembly person was the ONLY thing that worked for me after 2 months of hell

0 coins

the claimyr thing actually works? just looked it up

0 coins

Yeah it does. I was skeptical too but after trying to call for 3 weeks straight I gave in and tried it. Had an agent on the phone within an hour who actually fixed my issue.

0 coins

Have you checked your spam folder for any other emails from them? Sometimes they send instructions for additional verification but it goes to spam. Classic NYSDOL move 🙄

0 coins

i literally just got paid today after the EXACT same situation. took 7 weeks total. what worked was calling right at 8:00am when they open and specifically saying "escalate to supervisor" until they transferred me. regular agents just read from scripts.

0 coins

Congrats on finally getting paid! Did they give you all your back payments at once?

0 coins

Yep! All came in one big deposit. Just keep certifying every week so when they do fix it you'll get everything you're owed.

0 coins

write to ur state senator! worked 4 me after 2 months of bs

0 coins

My cousin works for the DOL (not in NY) and says their systems are completely outdated and different departments literally can't see each other's actions. So the email system might show you're approved while the payment system still shows pending. It's not even the agents' fault - the whole infrastructure is ancient.

0 coins

This is 100% accurate. I used to work in government IT and these systems are sometimes running on code from the 1980s that nobody knows how to update anymore.

0 coins

and yet our taxes pay for this garbage 💯

0 coins

They did this to me last month!! The issue was my identity verification got approved but then my wage verification was still pending. The agent couldn't see both systems at once. I had to call 13 TIMES before I got someone who could actually help me. What a joke.

0 coins

Check your NY.gov account message center too. Sometimes they send messages there that don't come through email. Total clown show operation 🤡

0 coins

I did check there and there's nothing new... just the original claim confirmation from 5 weeks ago 😭

0 coins

This exact thing happened 2 me! After getting that email I had 2 wait another 10 days & then money started showing up. sometimes their system just takes time to process even after approval

0 coins

Unpopular opinion but try going in person if you can. The local career centers sometimes have unemployment staff who can look things up for you. Worked when nothing else did for me.

0 coins

wait they actually have in-person help?? where??

0 coins

Some of the NY Career Centers have unemployment staff on certain days. You have to call ahead and check. Not all of them do but worth a shot.

0 coins

I couldn't get anywhere with regular calls, but I used claimyr.com to actually get through to someone who could help. My claim was stuck in the exact same way - approved but not paying out. Turns out there was a secondary review that needed to be cleared. Worth checking out if you're desperate.

0 coins

did you have to provide any personal info to that site? seems sketchy

0 coins

No personal info needed! It just calls the unemployment line for you and connects you when an agent picks up. Saved me from hours on hold and the agent I got actually fixed my issue.

0 coins

omg stop calling and just TAG THEM ON TWITTER!! seriously the social media team actually gets stuff done. Idk why but it worked for me when nothing else did.

0 coins

This is actually facts. Public complaints scare them lol
