NY unemployment website down when I need to certify - might lose benefits

Got a voicemail yesterday telling me my unemployment claim is finally processed and I need to certify for weekly benefits right away. Been trying to log into labor.nys.gov since last night but the site keeps crashing or timing out. Called at least 8 different numbers from their website but all I get is automated messages about "experiencing unusually high call volume" then it hangs up. I'm seriously frustrated because I've been waiting almost 7 weeks for this claim to process and now I might miss my certification because their system doesn't work? Not fair to have my payments delayed or denied because their technology is broken. Anyone know another way to reach an actual human being or a workaround for the website issues?

I was stuck in the exact same situation back in april when my claim got approved. The website would crash every single time I tried to certify. After 3 days of trying to get through on the phone I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a live agent within like 30 minutes. Talking to the rep got my benefits processed and paid out within a couple days. Best decision I made during this whole nightmare process! They have a video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this actually any different from the other 500 'solutions' that dont work? The system is completely broken no matter what u try 🙄

This is literally the only thing that worked for me after weeks of trying. It connects you directly to a live agent which is impossible to get otherwise. My benefits were in my account 2 days after talking to someone.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? been trying to certify for 2 weeks now and nothing works

It's the real deal. They basically wait on hold for you and call you when they get through to a live person. Saved me hours of headaches and my sanity tbh

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? the unemployment system feels designed to make us give up 😩

I used this last month when my claim got stuck in pending purgatory. Can confirm it works - got through to an actual human who fixed my issue in 10 minutes. My benefits hit my account that same week.

The entire ny unemployment system is a complete joke. They send u notifications saying u need to do something but then make it impossible to actually do it. I had the same problem last month and ended up having to wake up at 5am to access the site before it crashed. Ridiculous that we have to jump through these hoops.

THIS!!! It's like they're actively trying to stop us from getting benefits we're entitled to. I started keeping a journal of all my attempts just in case they try to deny me.

Did the 5am trick actually work? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

Yeah it worked for me but still took like 3 attempts. The site has way less traffic between 4:30-6am. Good luck!

I know this sounds dumb but have u tried using a different browser? The site is totally broken on Chrome but sometimes works on Firefox or even (god forbid) Internet Explorer/Edge. Also clearing your cache might help. The ny unemployment site was clearly designed in 1997 and never updated 🤣

I faced this exact issue and found that the mobile site sometimes works when the desktop version is down. Also, have you tried the automated phone certification system? Call 1-888-581-5812 for automated weekly certification. You'll need your PIN but it's better than nothing if the website keeps failing.

Thanks for this! I tried the mobile site and it still times out, but I'll definitely try that certification number. Do you know if there's a specific time of day that's better to call?

Early morning (like 7:30am) or late evening (after 7pm) tends to work better. The automated system gets clogged up during business hours too. Hope it works for you!

After spending MONTHS fighting with ny unemployment, I can offer some actually useful advice: 1. The website maintenance happens Sunday nights into Monday morning, so avoid those times completely 2. Try using the site between 2-4am or 6-8pm when traffic is lowest 3. If you've been approved and just need to certify, the automated phone system at 1-888-581-5812 works even when the website is down 4. If you absolutely need to talk to someone (which sounds like you do), claimyr.com is the only reliable method I've found. They connect you with a real person at NYSDOL who can fix your claim issues on the spot. It's what finally solved my 3-month certification nightmare. 5. Contact your state representative! They actually have special channels to escalate unemployment issues. Google your district and send them an email explaining your situation. 6. Document EVERYTHING. Screenshot error messages, record call attempts, write down dates/times. If they try to deny your claim for "failure to certify" you'll need this evidence. Don't give up - the system is frustrating by design but persistence pays off!

This is solid advice! I'd add that sending a message through the "Contact Us" form on the labor website can sometimes trigger a callback (though it takes 5-7 days usually).

Thank you for such detailed help! I'm going to try the phone certification system tonight and if that doesn't work I'll check out Claimyr. The state rep idea is brilliant - never would have thought of that.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol... but fr does claimyr actually work? like how?

0 coins

It works by basically having an automated system that calls repeatedly and navigates the phone tree, then rings your phone when it gets a human on the line. I was skeptical too but it was the only thing that worked after weeks of trying. Talking to a person got my issue fixed immediately.

Bro i been in the same boat for 3 WEEKS. the system is complete trash. Try using incognito mode on your browser it sometimes works. or try at midnight when less ppl are on the site. so stupid we gotta do all this just to get what we're owed 💯

Not sure if you're still having problems but my sister was in the same situation and she drove to an actual NY DOL career center and they helped her certify in person. You might have to make an appointment but at least its a real person who can help.

I didn't even know they had physical locations that could help! Do you know if I need to make an appointment first?

Yeah you should call ahead and book an appointment. They're called NY Career Centers. Not all of them handle unemployment stuff so make sure to ask specifically about certification help when u call.

The same thing happened to me!! I found out that sometimes you gotta try certifying at weird hours like 3am when the site isnt being hammered. Also if your using wifi try switching to cell data or vice versa cuz sometimes that fixes connection issues with the site. If all else fails try the automated phone line

Typical government inefficiency 🤡 They expect us to follow all their rules exactly but then make it impossible to actually do so. I ended up having to get my state assembly person involved after 6 weeks of website errors. Maybe try contacting your local rep?

This ^^^ State reps actually have dedicated staff for unemployment issues because so many people have problems. They can usually get things moving.

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work. The whole system is rigged to make it so hard that people just give up on claiming benefits 🤮

I felt exactly the same way until I finally got through using claimyr.com - literally the only thing that worked after weeks of trying. Sometimes you gotta spend money to get your money 😂

So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when my neighbor told me about this. Talking to a human fixed my issue in 10 minutes. Sometimes the hacks actually work lol

According to the ny unemployment twitter account they're having sitewide technical issues that should be resolved "soon" (whatever that means in government time lol). If u have Twitter maybe try DMing them directly? Sometimes they respond.

0 coins

i had the EXACT same problem with certifying. i kept getting locked out of the site for "too many attempts" when it was THEIR SYSTEM failing! what worked for me was trying at exactly 7:30am when they first open the phones. the queue is shorter and the site works better. keep at it!

0 coins

Good to know I'm not alone! I'll set an alarm for 7:30 tomorrow. So frustrating that we have to use these weird workarounds just to access a basic government service.

0 coins

unpopular opinion: the ny unemployment website crashes are intentional to reduce the number of people who can successfully claim benefits. they know exactly what they're doing 👀

I've been saying this for months! It's like they design the system to be as frustrating as possible so people just give up. Classic government BS.

facts. they make it way harder than it needs to be. notice how the tax payment website NEVER crashes? 🤔
