Can't certify for NY unemployment by phone - system always busy and online not working
I'm BEYOND frustrated! I've been trying to certify for my weekly NY unemployment benefits by phone for the past THREE DAYS and keep getting that automated message saying 'all representatives are busy' before it hangs up on me! I can't certify online either because my account is showing some technical error that I don't understand. I've tried calling at 8am, 12pm, 4pm... nothing works! What am I supposed to do when I literally can't reach anyone?? I need this money for rent due next week and I'm panicking that I'll miss this week's benefits completely. Has anyone found a way to actually get through to a human being there?

Try calling exactly at 7:58am - that's when their system first opens and you have the best chance of getting in the queue before it fills up. Also make sure you're calling the right certification number (888-581-5812) not the general claims number. If you keep getting technical errors online, you'll need to speak with someone to fix your account access.

•Thanks for the tip about 7:58am! I'll set my alarm even earlier tomorrow morning. And yes, I've been calling that exact number. The online error says something about 'account verification required' but doesn't give me any way to verify it. So frustrating!

This happens EVERY SINGLE MONTH! The NYSDOL phone system is a JOKE. They expect us to certify but make it IMPOSSIBLE to get through. I've been on unemployment since November and it's ALWAYS like this around the 15th when everyone is trying to certify. You basically have to treat it like a full-time job just trying to get through.

I had the same problem last month, and ended up using Claimyr to get through to a rep. They basically call for you and hold your place in line, then call you back when they reach a real person. Saved me hours of frustration. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. I was skeptical but it actually worked when I couldn't get through for over a week on my own.

•I've never heard of this before. Does it really work? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point because I'm about to miss my certification window!

•I've heard about this service. Some people in my unemployment Facebook group swear by it. But WHY should we have to pay a third party just to access OUR BENEFITS in the first place?? The system is BROKEN!

For the 'account verification required' error online, you're dealing with two separate issues: 1. The phone certification problem - which is unfortunately common during high-volume periods 2. An account security flag - this happens when there's unusual activity detected, when you use a new device, or after system maintenance For the online issue, try these steps first: - Clear your browser cache and cookies - Use a different browser entirely - Try from a computer instead of phone (or vice versa) - Make sure you're entering your NY.gov ID exactly as registered If those don't work, you'll need to speak with someone in the account services department (different from regular claims). The technical support line opens at 8:30am and sometimes has shorter wait times: 800-833-3000.

•Thank you so much for explaining! I didn't realize there were different departments. I'll try the technical fixes you mentioned right away and if that doesn't work, I'll call that other number in the morning. I appreciate the detailed help.

You know what helps sometimes? If you have a friend or family member who can try calling for you at the same time, it increases your chances of getting through. Also, I think Thursdays are less busy than Mondays or Fridays. But also, do you have any kind of virtual private network (VPN) turned on? That might be causing your online verification problem since the system flags unusual IP addresses.

•whats a vpn??? is that why my account says error too???

•A VPN masks your location online. If you don't know what it is, you probably don't have one active! But check if you're using public wifi - that can sometimes cause security flags too.

Just checking in - were you able to get through with any of these methods? If you've tried everything and still can't certify, you should document all your attempts (dates, times, screenshots of errors). This will help if you need to request retroactive certification later. Don't panic yet - NYSDOL will typically allow backdated certification if you can show you made reasonable attempts to certify on time but were prevented by system issues.

•Update: I FINALLY got through! I tried the Claimyr service that someone mentioned, and within about 40 minutes I was talking to a real person. They fixed both issues - turns out my account needed verification because I had logged in from a new device. The agent also processed my certification over the phone. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

•Great news! Glad you got it resolved. For anyone else reading this thread later, remember to always document your attempts to certify if you're having system issues. Screenshots of errors, notes of call attempts, etc. This documentation can help if you need to request retroactive certification.

My cousin had this exact same problem last month and it took him 2 weeks to finally get someone on the phone. By then he'd already missed one payment cycle. The whole system needs an overhaul honestly. When I was on unemployment back in early 2025 it was nowhere near this bad.

•That's what I was afraid of - missing a payment cycle! Thankfully I got it resolved with one of the suggestions here, but you're right that the system needs serious improvements. It shouldn't be this difficult to certify when we're following all the rules.
