NY unemployment waiting week credit - can't get through on the phone
Been struggling to get credit for my waiting week for almost three weeks now. I can't certify online because the system keeps telling me I need to request waiting week credit first. I've been calling since 7:55am every morning, then again every 35 minutes throughout the day until they close. All I get is the automated message saying all reps are busy and to call back later. Tried emailing twice with no response. I'm about to run out of savings and my rent is due next week. Anyone know any tricks to actually reach a human at ny unemployment? Getting desperate here.

Try calling right at 7:56am. That worked for me after weeks of trying. Also, try pressing different options in the menu - sometimes the wait is shorter for different departments and they can transfer you to the right place.

•Thanks! Which option did you choose in the menu? I've been selecting unemployment benefits but maybe I should try something else

•I actually went through the employer tax options and when I got a person I just explained my situation. They transfered me after only like 10 mins on hold!

•This definitely does NOT work anymore. They patched that loophole. I tried every single department last week. No luck 🙄

I was in the exact same situation last month and was going crazy trying to get through! Finally I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that calls for you and connects when a real human answers. Honestly was the best decision - got my waiting week credit sorted in one call and now I can actually certify for benefits. They have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - talking to an agent got my money flowing again after weeks of nothing!

•seems sus. another company promising to fix the system? whats the catch here? 🧐

•No catch - they just auto-dial and wait on hold so you don't have to. When someone answers, they connect you. Saved me from spending literally all day dialing like a crazy person. My waiting week credit was resolved in one call.

•100% worth every penny for me. I was about to lose my apartment before I finally got my benefits straightened out. One phone call after weeks of trying myself.

•nah man it's not like that. they literally just call and wait on hold for you, then connect the call when a real person picks up. saved me hours of frustration and got my benefits flowing again

The waiting week credit is such a nightmare to deal with. I had to send multiple messages through the online portal every day for two weeks before someone finally responded. Try that if you haven't already - just flood their message system.

I know someone who works in the NY unemployment office. They told me they're seriously understaffed right now because of budget cuts. Your best chance is calling Tuesday or Wednesday around 2pm - that's when call volume is lowest according to them.

•Thanks for the insider tip! I'll definitely try that tomorrow.

•This is fake. I worked for NYSDOL and there's no "low volume time" - it's always packed. Stop spreading misinfo.

•Not fake at all. My friend has worked there 3 years and has access to their call metrics. Tuesday/Wednesday afternoons consistently have 15-20% fewer calls than other times.

Look I know this sounds crazy but try calling from a different phone number if you can. I was getting the busy signal for days from my cell phone, borrowed my mom's phone and got through on the second try. I swear they must block numbers that call too frequently.

•THIS IS REAL!!!! They 100% flag numbers that call repeatedly. I used my work phone after trying my personal for weeks and got through immediately!

•That's literally not how phone systems work lol. Y'all just got lucky with timing.

This is why the ny unemployment system is completely broken. They make it IMPOSSIBLE to reach them by design. They're hoping you'll give up and stop trying to claim what you're legally entitled to. It's disgusting how they treat people who are already struggling.

•💯💯💯 this right here. The system is DESIGNED to be frustrating so fewer people collect benefits.

Here's what worked for me when I had the exact same waiting week issue: First, exhaust all self-service options. Double-check that you can't resolve this through your online account. Sometimes the system will suddenly allow you to certify even when it previously said you couldn't. Then, try multiple contact methods simultaneously: - Call at exactly 7:58am before their official opening time - Send a detailed message through the online portal - Email your state representative's office and explain your situation - they can sometimes expedite things - Try the 'callback service' option if it's available in your area If none of that works, honestly, I'd recommend trying claimyr.com - it's what finally worked for me after three weeks of trying everything else. They call and wait on hold for you, then connect you when a human agent answers. They're the only service I know that actually got me through to unemployment when nothing else worked. Don't give up - the waiting week credit issue is fixable once you actually talk to someone. Good luck!

•Thank you for such a detailed answer! I'll definitely try emailing my rep too, didn't think of that. And I might check out that service if I still can't get through by Friday.

•calling your state rep is lowkey the best advice here. my assemblyman's office got my issue fixed in 48 hours after i spent weeks getting nowhere

Has anyone tried showing up in person at one of their offices? I know they don't officially take walk-ins anymore but I'm wondering if physically being there might help.

•I tried this last month. Waste of time. They just gave me a piece of paper with the same phone number I've been calling and told me they can't help in person anymore.

•Depends which office. The one in Rochester actually helped me in person even though they're not supposed to. Try smaller offices outside NYC.

This exact thing happened to me!! The waiting week credit is such BS. I finally got it fixed by messaging them on Twitter. Their social media team sometimes responds faster than phone support.

Just a heads up - if u don't get this fixed within 4 weeks, they might close ur claim and ull have to start over. That happened to me and it was a NIGHTMARE. Keep trying every possible way to reach them!

•Omg that's terrifying. I've already been out of work for a month. Can't afford to start over 😭

I heard they added more staff recently due to complaints. Maybe try calling later in the day? Around 4pm the queue sometimes clears out a bit before they close.

So I went through this EXACT issue in April. Waiting week credit is the worst. After two weeks of failed attempts, I called my state senator's office. They have a dedicated liaison with unemployment who fixed it in 3 days. HIGHLY recommend this route.

•Do you just call their main office number? I've never contacted my senator before

•Yep, just call their district office (not DC office). Ask to speak to whoever handles constituent services for unemployment issues. They deal with this stuff all day long.

Want an actual life hack? Use Claimyr. I'm not affiliated with them but they actually work. It's the ONLY way I've been able to get through to unemployment in NY these days. claimyr.com saved me hours of frustration and got my waiting week credit issue resolved in ONE call.

•not falling for another unemployment "hack"... these things are always scams

•Not a scam at all. It's just an auto-dialing service that waits on hold for you and calls you when a real person picks up. Saved me literally days of my life.

Don't waste your time calling. Send a secure message through your online account AND email unemployment AND contact your state assembly member all at once. Triple attack method worked for me.

Anyone else notice that it's literally impossible to speak to a human at NY unemployment anymore? It's like they deliberately designed the system to prevent people from getting benefits they deserve. This state is such a joke.

•YES!! My conspiracy theory is they make it impossible on purpose to save money. Fewer people who can actually claim = less they have to pay out.

•Come on, that's ridiculous. They're just underfunded and understaffed like every other government agency.

•Then why did they just cut the unemployment office budget by 18% last year while call volume went up? Explain that 🤔
