Need proof of NY unemployment benefits for my landlord - where to find documentation?
I got laid off from my marketing job in October when our company downsized. Been collecting ny unemployment since November, but now my landlord is asking for proof that I'm actually receiving benefits before they'll approve my request for a payment plan on my rent. I've looked all over the unemployment website and can't figure out where to download or print any kind of official documentation that shows I'm getting benefits. The payment history screen only shows past payments, not confirmation that I'm currently approved and receiving benefits. Called the unemployment office 6 times this week but can never get through to anyone. My landlord needs this by next Friday or they're starting eviction proceedings. Has anyone successfully gotten documentation proving they're on active unemployment benefits? Where did you find it?

You can print out your payment history from your online account. Just login, go to payment history, and there should be a print option. That's what I used when my car loan people needed proof.

•Thanks but the payment history only shows past payments. My landlord wants something that specifically states I'm approved for ongoing benefits and what my weekly rate is. The payment history doesn't show future eligibility.

•Print the payment history AND the determination letter you got when you were initially approved. That combo worked for my apartment complex.

•I never saved the determination letter 😩 Is there a way to find it again in the system?

After trying for WEEKS to reach ny unemployment by phone with no luck, I finally got through using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They basically stayed on hold for me and called my phone when they got a live agent. Took about 90 mins instead of the 5+ hours I was spending. The agent emailed me a benefits verification letter right while I was on the phone. it was the only way I could talk to a live agent, and talking to that agent got my documentation unlocked so fast. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've tried like everything to get through to them 🙄

•Yeah it actually worked for me. I was sceptical too but I was desperate after trying for 3 days straight. They connected me with someone who fixed my issue in like 10 minutes once I got through.

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? seems like everyone's trying to make $ off desperate unemployment folks 👀

•The difference is it actually works lol. They don't promise to fix ur unemployment issues - they just get you a callback when an agent is on the line. The rest is between you and the unemployment office.

•I used claimyr.com too! Got through to someone who helped me download my benefits statement from my online account (there's a hidden section they had to activate for me).

If you go to your online account and click on 'Documents' there should be a section called 'Monetary Determination' or something similar. That shows what you're eligible for weekly and how long. If you cant find it, you might need to request a new copy.

•I don't see a Documents section anywhere. Where exactly is it located? I've been through every tab I can find.

•Hmm thats wierd, they must have changed the website again 🙄 The NY unemployment site is constantly moving things around and breaking stuff.

When I needed proof for my apartment complex, I had to call and request a benefit verification letter. The problem is actually getting someone on the phone. I spent 3 days trying before I got through. Once you get someone, they can email it to you while you're on the call.

Your landlord cant evict you that fast anyway, there's still some covid protections in place in NY. Tell them you're trying to get the documentation but the unemployment office is backed up. They're just trying to scare you.

•Really? That's good to know. Still want to get them the documentation to keep things smooth but that takes some pressure off.

•Be careful with this advice. Some eviction protections have expired. Depends on your specific situation and location in NY. Don't risk it!

•True, not all protections are still active but there's still a longer process than before. Landlord can't just kick you out in a week no matter what. but yeah def still get the documentation asap.

Here's what you need to do step by step to get your benefits verification: 1. First, try the online portal and look for 'Monetary Determination Letter' under Documents. If it's not there, don't waste time searching - it's likely not accessible online anymore. 2. You NEED to speak with a representative. The regular phone line is virtually impossible to get through on. I wasted 2 weeks trying. 3. Go to claimyr.com - it's a service that will wait on hold for you and call you when they get a live agent. This saved me hours of hold time and got me through when nothing else worked. 4. When you get an agent, specifically ask for a 'Benefits Verification Letter' that shows your current claim status and weekly benefit amount. Make sure to tell them it's for housing purposes so they include all the relevant info. 5. They can email it to you right away while you're on the phone. 6. As a backup, ask them to also mail a physical copy to your address. The NY unemployment system is designed to be as difficult as possible but this method works. I had to do this exact thing for my mortgage company last month.

•Thank you SO much for the detailed steps. This is incredibly helpful! I'll try claimyr since it sounds like that's the only realistic way to get through.

•I second everything here. I fought with the website for days before using claimyr to get through to someone. Sent me the verification letter while I was still on the phone with them.

Another option: get a letter from your former employer stating you were laid off, combined with bank statements showing the deposits from unemployment. My credit union accepted that combo.

The benefits letter you need is NOT available online, despite what some people here are saying. ny unemployment DOT gov is completely useless for this. You HAVE to call and request the 'Benefits Verification Letter' from a live person. They email it to you.

•THIS is the correct answer!!! Stop wasting time looking for it online, it doesn't exist there. I learned this the hard way after 2 weeks of frustration.

•Thanks for the clear answer. At least now I know I'm not going crazy or missing something obvious on the website.

what did ur landlord sey when u told them ur trying but the unemployment office is impossible to reach? maybe u can buy some time by showing them screenshots of how backed up the system is - there's news articles u can google too

•They said they 'understand it might take time' but still need it by next Friday. So not much flexibility.

If you log in from a desktop computer (not mobile) theres a section under "Messages" where you can sometimes find your original determination letter. Click on all the messages and check the attachments. I found mine there by accident.

I had this EXACT same problem last month!!!! Nothing online worked. Had to call 37 times before getting through. When you finally reach someone, ask for a CLAIMANT BENEFITS STATEMENT - that's the official name of the document your landlord wants. It shows current status and future eligibility.

•Thank you for the exact name of the document! That will be helpful when I finally get through to someone.

•it's literally designed to be as unhelpful as possible. i worked in govt before and can confirm they intentionally make these systems hard to navigate.

Landlords are required to accept bank statements showing deposits as proof in NY state due to the pandemic tenant protections. Print those out and highlight the unemployment deposits. He can't legally reject that as proof.

•This isnt entirely accurate. Those protections expired for most situations. Some landlords will accept bank statements but they're within their rights to ask for official documentation.

•Some protections expired but the documentation flexibility is still in place through 2023 for rent assistance programs. depends on the county tho.
