How to get NY unemployment award letter showing benefits ended in September?

My landlord is demanding proof that my unemployment benefits ended on September 4th because he thinks I'm hiding income or something. I've been having a hard time paying rent since then because I'm only working part-time at a grocery store while looking for something better. I tried logging into my NY unemployment account to download or request an award letter showing when my benefits stopped, but I can't figure out where to find it. The website is so confusing! I looked under 'payment history' and 'documents' but don't see anything that specifically shows an end date for benefits. Called the unemployment number but gave up after being on hold for almost 2 hours. Has anyone successfully gotten this kind of letter? My landlord is threatening eviction if I can't prove my benefits ended.

You need to go to your account on the labor website and look for 'Payment History.' From there you should be able to print out all your payment records which will show the last payment date. That's what I used for my apartment application to show when my benefits stopped.

I tried that but the payment history just shows individual payments. It doesn't explicitly state "benefits ended on X date" which is what my landlord is insisting on seeing 😫

Landlords can be such a pain sometimes. Mine wanted like 50 documents when my benefits ended too. The payment history worked for me tho.

Try taking a screenshot of the final payment with the date, and maybe circle it or highlight it? Sometimes you gotta spoon feed these things to landlords 🙄

After trying for days to reach someone at unemployment, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it actually got me connected to a real person at the unemployment office! They called for me, waited on hold, then connected me when an agent picked up. The agent helped me get an official letter stating when my benefits ended. It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my paperwork sorted out. Check out this video if you're curious how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds fishy. Does it actually work? Why would I pay for something I should be able to get for free?

0 coins

Totally get the skepticism! I felt the same way. But after sitting on hold for 3+ hours multiple days in a row, I was desperate. It worked perfectly - they called, stayed on hold, then my phone rang when a real person was there. Saved me hours of frustration!

wait you actually got a human at unemployment? that's like spotting a unicorn in times square 🦄

I know right? 😂 I was shocked when my phone rang and there was an actual person on the other end who could help!

I went through this exact same thing. You need to request a MONETARY DETERMINATION letter. It's not easy to find on the site. You'll need to call and specifically ask for this document which shows your benefit period and amounts. FYI - be prepared to wait on hold forever. I had to call right when they opened at 8am to even have a chance.

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed to know. Did they email it to you or mail a physical copy?

0 coins

They mailed it to me but said they could email it if I needed it urgently. Took about 10 days to arrive in the mail.

your landlord sounds like a jerk. pretty sure they can't evict you just because benefits ended if youre still paying rent (even if late). check with legal aid maybe? ny has some tenant protections.

The entire ny unemployment system is designed to make simple things difficult. I've been in similar situations. Here's what works: 1. First, try messaging them through your online account. Go to 'Messages' and send a specific request for an 'end of benefits verification letter' or 'monetary determination letter'. 2. If that doesn't work, call the main line 1-888-209-8124 but use a service like claimyr.com to avoid the endless hold times. I wasted 3 days of my life on hold before finding this. 3. Be very specific when you talk to them - ask for a 'benefit determination letter with end date clearly indicated' 4. If all else fails, go to your nearest NY Career Center in person. They often can help print documents that are impossible to get online. 5. Document ALL communication with both unemployment and your landlord. Save emails, take screenshots, write down who you spoke with and when. The system is frustrating but persistence eventually pays off. Good luck!

This is solid advice. I'd add that sometimes if you tweet at @NYSLabor with your issue (don't share personal info) they respond faster than calling.

This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't even think about going to a career center. There's one about 20 minutes from me so that might be the easiest option.

Happy to help! The career centers are definitely underutilized resources. They can often access the same systems but with way less hassle than the phone lines.

Try calling your local state representative's office. My benefits were messed up last year and I was getting nowhere with unemployment. Called my assemblyman's office and they have special contacts at unemployment who fixed everything in 3 days.

THIS! 👆 It's literally their job to help constituents with government services. I did this for my dad and it worked like magic.

0 coins

I never thought of this! Do you just call their main office number?

0 coins

Yep! Just google your district's assembly member or state senator, call their office, and explain your situation. They usually have a staff member who handles these kinds of issues.

Ugh I'm dealing with this EXACT thing right now for my housing application!! The system is so messed up. I ended up having to get a letter from my former employer stating when I was laid off and how long I was eligible for benefits. My HR department was actually super helpful.

The actual document you need is called a "Monetary Benefit Determination" and it shows your entire claim period including end date. I had to get this for my mortgage refinance. You can request it through your online account under 'Forms and Documents' but the system is glitchy af.

This is correct. I work in mortgage lending and we accept this document as proof of benefit termination. Make sure it has your name and claim ID visible.

I'm amazed ur landlord doesn't know benefits ended for everyone on Sept 4th when the federal programs expired. It was all over the news. Maybe show him news articles about it?

0 coins

I tried that! He says he needs "official documentation" not news articles 🤦‍♀️

0 coins

Some people just want to make life difficult. Send him to the unemployment website and let HIM figure it out lol

landlords can be the worst sometimes. sorry ur dealing with this bs.

Did anyone else notice that the DOL website is always "under maintenance" exactly when you need it most? 😤 I swear they do this on purpose.

0 coins

EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. And always on Sunday nights when I'm trying to certify! 🤬

The site was built in like 1994 and they never updated it properly. It literally runs on COBOL programming. My uncle works in IT for the state and says it's a miracle it works at all.

0 coins

not sure if this helps but when my benefits ended I took a screenshot of my payment history showing the final payment and wrote a self-affidavit explaining that benefits ended on Sept 4 due to federal program expiration. had it notarized at UPS store for like $5. my landlord accepted it.

0 coins

This is actually really smart! I might try this approach. Thanks for the suggestion!

I noticed nobody mentioned it but there's a form called "Request for Verification of Unemployment Benefits" on the DOL website. You fill it out and mail/fax it in. I had to do this for my mortgage company. Took about 3 weeks to get the letter back though.

Pro tip: call the unemployment office but enter the Spanish option. The wait times are WAY shorter and most agents speak English too. I got through in 20 minutes this way vs 2+ hours on the English line.

0 coins

omg this is genius. gonna try this tomorrow!

0 coins

I did this and immediately got connected to someone who helped me with the exact same issue. They emailed me a benefits letter within an hour.

0 coins

Have u tried checking ur email? When benefits ended, NY DOL sent out emails to everyone affected. Maybe search ur inbox for emails from noreply@labor.ny.gov from around early September.

0 coins

That's a good idea! I'll check all my folders including spam. Thanks!

For what its worth, I tried for TWO MONTHS to get this exact document for my mortgage company. Ended up hiring an unemployment advocate (cost me $175) who got it within a week. Sometimes u just gotta pay to save your sanity.

0 coins

Was it worth the money? I'm at my wits end trying to get through to someone.

0 coins

1000% worth it. I wasted so many hours trying to DIY it. Should have just paid from the beginning.

0 coins

idk if this helps but I had to prove my benefits ended for my food stamps application and I used the letter they sent when the federal programs were ending. it came in late August and specifically mentioned Sept 4 as the end date. maybe check your mail from that time?

0 coins

Ok so I work at a bank and we see this issue ALL THE TIME with customers. Here's the secret: you need to call and specifically ask for a "BENEFIT STATEMENT WITH TERMINATION DATE" - those exact words. Don't let them transfer you around. Be polite but firm that this is a standard document they can generate.

0 coins

Thank you!! This is exactly what I needed - the exact terminology to use when I call them. Really appreciate it!

0 coins

Yo I just went through this whole ordeal and finally got my letter yesterday! I tried calling for weeks with no luck. Then I used claimyr.com which got me through to a real person. Told them exactly what I needed and they emailed me the document same day. Talking to an agent got my document so fast I almost cried of relief lol.

0 coins

How does that claimyr thing work? seems too good to be true

0 coins

It's actually really simple - they have some system that calls and navigates the phone tree for you, stays on hold, and then calls your phone when a real person picks up. Saved me hours of hold music. Made dealing with unemployment actually bearable!

0 coins

hmm ok might check it out. beats listening to that hold music for 3 hours straight lol
