How to get NY unemployment award letter proving benefits ended September 6th?
I need to get an award letter from NY unemployment that shows my benefits ended on September 6th for my apartment application. I can't find this anywhere in my online account. Is there a specific form I need to fill out? Do I need to call the unemployment office? Has anyone successfully gotten this kind of documentation recently?

I've checked my inbox multiple times and there's nothing there. It only has the initial approval letter from when I first applied.

You need to request an official benefit payment history. Log into your NY.gov account and navigate to the unemployment section. Look for 'Payment History' and there should be an option to request an official copy. Print that out and it will show your last payment date. Most landlords accept this as proof your benefits ended.

Thank you! I found the payment history section but I don't see any option to request an official copy. It just shows a list of payments. Is there a specific button or link I should be looking for?

Look for a printer icon in the top right corner of the payment history page. Click that and it'll generate a PDF with the official NYSDOL header. That's what most people use as documentation. If you can't find it, you may need to call and request it directly.

I had to do this last month! The payment history won't work because it doesn't explicitly say your benefits ENDED, just shows no more payments. Property managers are picky about this stuff. You need to request a Benefits Determination Letter which shows the official end date.

That makes sense. How did you request the Benefits Determination Letter? Was there a specific form or did you have to call?

I've been trying to call the NY unemployment office for 3 DAYS about this exact issue!!! Every time I call it's either busy signals or they disconnect me after waiting for 40 minutes!!! This system is GARBAGE!!!

Same here! I needed a similar document last week and spent hours trying to get through. If you're still struggling to reach someone, I found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending days calling. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE that shows how it works. Totally worth it for me since I needed that documentation ASAP for my new landlord.

To specifically answer your question: You need to request a "UI Monetary Benefit Determination" letter. This is different from your payment history and will explicitly state your benefit period start and end dates. You have three options: 1. Call the claims center at 1-888-209-8124 (though this is difficult to get through) 2. Use the secure message feature in your online account to request this specific document 3. Visit a NYS Career Center in person (often the fastest method) Make sure to specify you need documentation showing your benefit period END DATE, not just payment history. The end date is what most housing applications require.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll try the secure message feature right now. If that doesn't work, I'll see if I can find a Career Center near me. I appreciate everyone's help!

You're welcome! Just be sure to include your full name, the last 4 digits of your SSN, and your customer ID number (if you have it) in the secure message. This helps them process your request faster. It typically takes 5-7 business days to receive the letter after requesting it this way.

I had the same issue when I was applying for an apartment! My experience was that I went to the career center in person and told them I needed proof my benefits ended on a specific date. The lady was super nice and printed it right there for me! Took maybe 20 minutes total including wait time. WAY easier than trying to do it online or by phone.

That's really helpful to know! There's a career center about 30 minutes from me so I might just go there tomorrow. Did you need to bring any specific documents with you?

Just bring your ID and know your social security number. They might ask for your NY.gov login info too so have that ready. And maybe bring a copy of your initial determination letter if you have it, but they didn't actually ask me for it.

Did the secure message thing work for you? I'm wondering if I should try that too since I'm having a similar issue with my lender wanting proof of when my benefits stopped.

I sent the secure message yesterday but haven't heard back yet. I'm going to try the career center tomorrow morning if I don't get a response today. I'll update here with what works!

One other option I forgot to mention: If you filed your taxes for the year when your unemployment ended, your 1099-G form will show the total benefits received and can serve as documentation that benefits have ended. Your landlord might accept this as proof, especially if combined with a statement from your bank showing no further deposits from NYSDOL after the end date.

UPDATE: I went to the career center this morning and got exactly what I needed! They printed a UI Monetary Benefit Determination letter showing my claim details including the end date of September 6th. Took about 45 minutes total with the wait. The staff was really helpful. Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

That's awesome! Glad it worked out for you. In-person is definitely the way to go with these kinds of things.
