How to get a denial letter from NY unemployment from 2019?
So back in November 2019 I got laid off from my job at a marketing firm and applied for unemployment. My claim was denied because I hadn't worked enough quarters to qualify. Now I'm applying for a housing assistance program and they're asking for proof that I was denied unemployment benefits back then. I've been calling the unemployment office for two weeks trying to get this letter but can't get through to anyone. Tried logging into my account but it only shows my claims from 2021 onwards. I need this letter ASAP or I might lose this housing opportunity. Has anyone dealt with getting old denial documentation from NY unemployment? Any suggestions on what to do?

I had the same issue trying to get documentation from 2020. Go to your online account and look for the 'Document Request' section. You can submit a request for a specific document there, but it took them almost 3 weeks to get back to me. If you need it faster, you'll need to talk to a rep directly. Good luck!

•thanks, I'll check that out. Did you have to specify the exact date of the denial or just the general time period?

•I just put the month and year. But make sure you explain what document you need specifically - like 'monetary determination letter' or 'benefits denial notice'

•this 'Document Request' section is impossible to find tho? where exactly is it on the site?

•It's under 'My Documents' in your account. If you don't see it, they might have changed the interface since I last used it 😕

I was stuck in the same boat last month trying to get documentation. After banging my head against the wall for days trying to reach someone, I finally used claimyr.com and got a callback with an actual agent within an hour. They were able to generate and email me the denial letter from my old claim right away. Talking to an agent got my paperwork unlocked so fast, it was the only way I could get what I needed. Check out their process here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•is this for real? seems too convenient to be true when the system is so broken 🤔

•100% real. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for weeks. They just hold your place in line and call you when they get an agent. Saved me from losing my apartment application deadline.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual unemployment system workaround that doesn't deliver?

•It worked for me! The agent was able to pull up my old claim and send the documentation I needed within 5 minutes of being on the phone. Beats calling for weeks with no answer.

•They don't try to fight your case or anything complicated - they literally just get you a human on the phone faster. That's it. The unemployment offices are so backlogged that's literally all I needed.

if you're near one of their offices you can try going in person. I did that for something similar last year and they printed it out for me right there. took like 2 hours of waiting but at least I got it same day.

Why dont u just write a letter urself? Its not like the housing ppl will verify with unemployment directly. Just sayin' 🤷♂️

•That seems like fraud and I'm not trying to get in legal trouble. The housing program said they'll verify all documents.

•That's terrible advice. Most assistance programs verify EVERYTHING and lying on government forms is literally a crime 🤦♀️

Here's what you need to do to get your denial letter from 2019: 1. First, try the NY unemployment online messaging system. Login to your account, go to Messages, and send a specific request for your 2019 denial documentation. Be very clear about what you need and why. 2. If that doesn't work within 48 hours, call first thing in the morning right when they open (like 7:59am). The phone lines are least busy then. 3. Another option is to email documents@labor.ny.gov with your request. Include your full name, last 4 of SSN, and the specific document you need with approximate date. 4. If all else fails and you need this urgently, I highly recommend using claimyr.com - they'll get you a callback with a real agent who can help. I've used them twice when I was completely stuck and needed to speak to someone quickly. It was seriously the best decision I made after wasting weeks trying on my own. 5. As a last resort, contact your state representative's office. They often have direct lines to unemployment office staff and can help push your request through. Don't lose your housing opportunity over bureaucratic delays! Good luck!

•This is solid advice 💯 The state rep thing really works too - my assembly person's office got me unstuck from a similar situation

I needed something like this for a mortgage application. Ended up having to file a FOIL (freedom of information law) request. Took forever tho - like 6 weeks 😡

The ny unemployment system is such TRASH for old records! I swear they purposely make it impossible to get any documentation from before the pandemic. Been there trying to get stuff for a legal case and it's like talking to a brick wall.

•facts. their whole system is designed to frustrate people into giving up. it's criminal fr

•I work in a gov office (not unemployment) and trust me it's not a conspiracy, it's just that their systems are ANCIENT and they don't talk to each other. Pre-2020 stuff might even be in a different database entirely.

Check if ur housing program will accept a sworn affidavit instead? Some places let you do that if you cant get the original documents. Worth asking.

•That's actually a really good suggestion, I'll call them tomorrow and see if that's an option. Thank you!

When i needed my old records I had to fax (yes, FAX in 2023!!) a request to 518-457-9378 with my full name, address on file when i filed the claim, and last 4 of ssn. took like 10 business days but they mailed me everything.

The document request time is crazy right now. My friend who works at NYSDOL says they're understaffed in that department and prioritizing current claims. She recommended going through claimyr.com to get someone on the phone cuz its actually faster than waiting for document requests to be processed.
