Why does ny unemployment keep asking me to recertify after I already did it?
I'm getting so frustrated with the certification process. I got laid off in August when my company downsized their operations. Been trying to certify weekly since September but something weird keeps happening. I complete my weekly certification online on Sunday, get the confirmation number and everything looks good. But then Monday morning, I check my account and it shows I still need to certify! I tried calling the automated system to certify instead, and the same thing happens - it accepts my certification but then acts like I never did it the next day. I've now missed out on 3 weeks of payments because the system won't recognize I'm certifying. Has anyone else dealt with this glitch? My rent is coming up and I'm getting desperate to figure this out.

This happened to me too! I thought I was going crazy for a while. Turned out there was a flag on my account for "identity verification" that no one bothered to tell me about. Try calling and specifically asking if there are any outstanding issues on your account that might be preventing payment. The online system is complete garbage.

•Thank you! How did you eventually get through to a real person? I've been calling for days and just get the automated system.

•It took me FOREVER to get through. Like 30+ calls a day for a week. Eventually I called right when they opened and got lucky.

•The identity verification stuff is a nightmare. They did this to me and never even sent a notice. Had to wait 6 weeks to get it fixed 😤

After weeks of failing to reach anyone at unemployment, I found this service called Claimyr that basically calls for you and gets you connected to a live agent. It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly. They have a video about how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The rep told me there was a system flag on my account that was making my certifications not register properly. Something they had to manually fix on their end. Got my back payments released within 48 hrs after talking to someone.

•hold up... is this some kind of paid service? does it actually work or is this just another scam targeting desperate people?

•Not a scam at all! I was skeptical too but it actually connected me to a real NY unemployment rep. They basically just automate the calling and waiting on hold part, then call you when they get a human. Check out their site claimyr.com if you're curious.

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch, they just call for you. After trying for 3 weeks to get through myself, it was worth it to finally talk to someone who could fix my claim issues. Talking to the agent got my $ unlocked so fast.

The certification system is COMPLETELY broken right now. I've been dealing with the same issue since July. What worked for me was going to my local career center in person (I'm in Buffalo) and they helped me figure out what was going on. Turns out I had answered one question wrong during certification which created a loop in their system.

•I didn't even know you could go in person! That might be easier than trying to get through on the phone. Do you need an appointment?

•Some offices require appointments, others don't. I'd recommend calling your local one first to check. They're much more helpful than trying to deal with the main unemployment office.

Exact same issue for me last month!!! I fixed it by completely clearing my browser cache and cookies, then using a different device (my wife's laptop instead of my phone). For some reason the mobile version of the site wasn't properly recording my certifications. Worth a try before spending hours on the phone!

Honestly, NY unemployment is a dumpster fire right now. I've been on it twice in the past 3 years and it gets worse every time. Your problem sounds like the dreaded "phantom certification" bug that's been happening since they "upgraded" their system. Here's what you need to do - take screenshots of EVERYTHING. Every confirmation number, every page confirmation. Then when you finally get through to a human (good luck), you can prove you've been trying to certify correctly. Also check if you have any outstanding questionnaires or messages in your account inbox - sometimes they hide important stuff in there that blocks your payments.

•💯 on the screenshots advice. Saved my butt when they tried to claim I hadn't been certifying properly.

•I've been calling the appeals number instead of the regular one. They answer faster and can sometimes help with these issues. Worth a shot.

•Smart! I forgot about that trick. The TTY line sometimes works better too.

This is a comprehensive breakdown of what could be happening with your certification issues: First, something is clearly wrong with either your account or how you're certifying. The most common reasons for this "certification loop" problem are: 1. There's an identity verification flag on your account that needs to be cleared by a representative 2. You're answering one of the certification questions in a way that's triggering additional review (especially the questions about work availability or looking for work) 3. Your account has a technical glitch that only a representative can fix manually 4. You have unresolved questionnaires or forms that need to be completed before certification will work Your best options to solve this: - Try calling the moment they open (7:30am on weekdays). The queue fills up FAST. - Use a service like claimyr.com that will call for you and get you connected to a live agent. Many people here have had success with it. - Check your online account for any messages or alerts that might explain the issue - Try certifying via phone instead of online, or vice versa if you've been using the phone - Contact your state representative's office - they can sometimes escalate unemployment issues Don't give up! The system is frustrating but persistence eventually pays off. Document everything with screenshots in case you need to prove your certification attempts later.

•Thank you for this detailed response! Really helpful. I'm going to try Claimyr first since I need to get this resolved ASAP for rent, and if that doesn't work I'll contact my state rep.

•The state rep suggestion is underrated! My sister had her claim stuck for 2 months, contacted her assembly person, and had it fixed in 3 days.

ugh the certification system is such TRASH. i think they deliberately make it confusing so people give up. classic government efficiency 🤡

This sounds like what happened to me. Do you see any pending payments or just nothing? Check your payment history page too, not just the main dashboard. Sometimes it'll show as "pending" there even if the main page acts like you never certified.

Have you checked to make sure your claim hasn't expired? Sometimes you need to file a new claim if the benefit year ended, even if you still have money in your account. The system is terrible at communicating this.

•My claim should still be active - only been on it since September. But I'll double check. Thanks for the suggestion!

Call your state assembly person RIGHT AWAY. I had the same problem for weeks, nothing worked, finally called my assembly person's office and they have special contacts at unemployment who fixed it in 3 days. Wish I'd done it sooner!

ok so dont laugh but have you tried turning it off and on again? 😂 like literally log out completely, clear browser cache, restart your computer, and try again? the site is so buggy sometimes this actually works.

•Lol I've tried that but might try again using a different browser entirely. Maybe Edge will work better than Chrome 🤷♂️

•Firefox worked for me when Chrome was acting up! worth a shot

I guarantee someone put a hold on your account and the system isn't telling you. It's happened to SO many people. The only way to fix it is getting through to a live person who can see what's actually going on with your claim. Keep calling or use claimyr.com to get through.

I'm dealing with something similar right now! Been stuck in this certification loop for 2 weeks. What's really frustrating is that I get the confirmation email saying my certification was successful, but then the next day it's like it never happened. I tried calling during different times of day but can never get through to a human. Has anyone tried certifying at different times during the week? I've been doing it on Sundays like you're supposed to, but wondering if there's a better day/time when their system is less glitchy. Also going to try the Claimyr service that people are mentioning - at this point I'm willing to pay to get this resolved since I'm behind on bills too.

•I'm having the exact same issue! The confirmation email thing is what's driving me crazy - it makes you think everything went through fine. I've been trying different browsers and devices but nothing seems to work. Let me know how the Claimyr service works out for you - I'm seriously considering it too since I can't afford to keep missing payments like this.

This is exactly what happened to me back in October! The certification would go through, I'd get the confirmation, then wake up the next day to find out I supposedly never certified. It's like the system has amnesia. What finally worked for me was discovering I had an old questionnaire buried in my account that I never completed from when I first filed. It was under a different tab and wasn't showing up as a notification anywhere. Once I found it and filled it out, my certifications started going through normally. Check every single section of your account - messages, documents, questionnaires, everything. Sometimes there's a random form or verification requirement hiding somewhere that's blocking your payments without telling you. The NY unemployment system is notorious for this kind of stuff. If you can't find anything, definitely try the phone certification instead of online, or vice versa. Sometimes one method works when the other doesn't. And yeah, keep those screenshots of everything - you'll need proof of your certification attempts when you finally get through to someone.
