Need help resetting mother's maiden name for UI direct deposit - NYDOL
Hey everyone, I'm having trouble with my unemployment claim. I need to reset my mother's maiden name for direct deposit, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Has anyone gone through this process before? Any tips on what I should say when I finally get through to someone at the unemployment office?

Ugh, dealing with the unemployment office is such a pain. I had to reset my security questions last month and it took forever. Make sure you have all your documents ready when you call. They'll probably ask for your SSN, claim number, and maybe some other verification info.

•For real tho, its like they make it difficult on purpose 🙄 took me 3 calls to finally get someone who knew what they were doing

•Same boat here. The hold times are insane. I swear I spent half my day just waiting on the phone.

•Thanks for the heads up! I'll make sure I have everything ready. Did they ask you any specific questions about your mother's maiden name?

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•I get the skepticism, but it honestly saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo. They even refund you if it doesn't work.

•Just used it yesterday and it worked like a charm. Beats sitting on hold all day!

When you get through, be super clear about needing to reset your mother's maiden name specifically for direct deposit. Sometimes they'll try to rush you off the phone, so stand your ground and make sure they understand exactly what you need.

Pro tip: call right when they open in the morning. The wait times are usually shorter then. Good luck!

I've been through this exact situation. Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your documents: SSN, claim number, current bank info, and any correspondence you've received from the unemployment office. 2. When you call, clearly state that you need to reset your mother's maiden name for direct deposit purposes. Be specific about it being for your unemployment claim. 3. They might ask you to verify other security questions, so be prepared for that. 4. If possible, have your original claim application handy. Sometimes they cross-reference the info. 5. Be patient and polite, but firm. If the agent seems unsure, don't be afraid to ask for a supervisor. 6. After they reset it, ask them to confirm that your direct deposit info is correct. 7. Request a confirmation number or email for the change. Hope this helps! Let us know how it goes.

•Ikr? It's so outdated. They should use something more secure, like a randomly generated passphrase or smthn.

•For real. My mom kept her last name when she got married, so it's not even a 'maiden' name. The whole system needs an overhaul.

Heads up, they just updated their system last week. The process might be a little different now. When I called, they had me verify my identity through their new online portal before they would make any changes. Might want to check if that applies to you too.

•Oh, thanks for the heads up! I'll check out their website before I call to see if there's any info about the new system.

Quick question - are you sure you need to reset your mother's maiden name? When I had issues with direct deposit, they just had me verify the last 4 digits of my bank account. Might be worth double-checking what info they actually need.

•That's a good point, I'll double-check. The website wasn't super clear about what exactly I needed to change.

I went through this same exact issue about 6 months ago! The key thing is to be really specific when you call - tell them you need to "update security question responses for direct deposit verification" rather than just saying you want to reset your mother's maiden name. That seemed to help the rep understand exactly what I needed. Also, they made me answer a bunch of other verification questions first (like previous addresses, employment history, etc.) before they'd let me update the maiden name. The whole call took about 45 minutes but it was worth it to finally get my direct deposit working again. Hope this helps!

•Thank you so much Sofia! That specific wording about "update security question responses for direct deposit verification" is super helpful. I was wondering what exactly to say when I call. 45 minutes sounds like a long call but definitely worth it if it gets everything sorted out. Did they give you any confirmation after they updated it?

I actually just went through this same process last month! One thing that really helped me was calling their dedicated direct deposit line instead of the main unemployment number. The wait time was much shorter (only about 20 minutes vs 2+ hours on the main line) and the agents seemed more knowledgeable about banking/deposit issues. The number is different from the regular claims line - you can find it buried on their website under "direct deposit services" or something like that. When I got through, I said exactly what Sofia mentioned about updating security question responses for direct deposit verification, and they walked me through the whole process step by step. They also sent me an email confirmation afterward which was reassuring. Good luck OP!

•Oh wow, there's a dedicated direct deposit line? That's a game changer! I had no idea they had separate numbers for different issues. I've been dreading calling the main line because everyone says the wait times are brutal. Thanks for sharing that tip - I'm definitely going to look for that number on their website. Did you have to provide different info when calling the direct deposit line, or was it pretty much the same verification process?

Just wanted to update everyone - I finally got through using the dedicated direct deposit line that Miguel mentioned! It took some digging on the website but I found it under "Payment Services" section. The wait was only about 15 minutes which was amazing compared to what I was expecting. The agent was super helpful and knew exactly what I needed when I said I wanted to "update security question responses for direct deposit verification." They had me verify my SSN, claim number, and a few previous addresses, then walked me through resetting my mother's maiden name. The whole process took about 20 minutes and I got an email confirmation right after. My direct deposit should be working for my next payment. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice - this community is awesome! 🙏
