NYS Department of Labor benefits missing this week - why haven't I received my unemployment payment?

I usually get my unemployment benefits deposited on Tuesday but nothing came through this week. I filed my weekly claim on Sunday like always and it shows as submitted in my account. My claim status still says active and I haven't received any notices about issues. This is really stressing me out because I have bills due. Has anyone else had their NYS Department of Labor benefits just not show up randomly? Should I be worried something is wrong with my claim?

Check your payment history in the NYS Department of Labor portal first. Sometimes there's a processing delay that shows up there before the actual deposit hits your account. Also verify that your direct deposit information is still correct - banks sometimes change routing numbers and that can cause payments to bounce back.

I checked and my payment history shows 'payment issued' for this week but my bank account is still empty. My direct deposit info looks right though.

same thing happened to me last month!! turned out there was some kind of verification hold they put on my account but they never sent me a notice about it. took me calling like 50 times to finally get through to someone

How did you find out about the hold? Did it show anywhere in your online account or did they only tell you when you called?

they only told me when i called, nothing showed up online which was so frustrating. apparently they needed me to verify my identity again even though id been getting benefits for months

If your payment shows as issued but you haven't received it, there could be several reasons: bank processing delays (especially if Monday was a holiday), a verification hold on your account, or an issue with your weekly certification. The NYS Department of Labor phone lines are always swamped but you need to call to get a real answer about what's happening with your specific claim.

Getting through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone is basically impossible these days. I tried for weeks when I had an issue and kept getting disconnected after being on hold for hours.

I had a similar issue with getting through to an agent and ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to someone at NYS Department of Labor within like 20 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration compared to calling myself.

This is exactly why the unemployment system is broken! They can just randomly hold your money without even telling you what's wrong. I went two weeks without benefits because of some mystery issue that took forever to resolve. The whole NYS Department of Labor system needs to be completely overhauled.

totally agree, its like they want to make it as difficult as possible

@Maya Diaz - I've been dealing with NYS unemployment for over a year and this exact scenario happened to me twice. When it shows "payment issued" but your bank account is empty, it usually means one of three things: 1) There's a bank processing delay (can take 1-3 business days even after "issued"), 2) Your bank rejected the deposit for some reason (wrong account info, closed account, etc.), or 3) NYS put a temporary hold that doesn't show up in your online portal. I'd recommend calling your bank first to see if they have any record of a pending or rejected deposit - that's usually faster than trying to get through to DOL. If your bank shows nothing, then you'll need to bite the bullet and keep calling the unemployment line until you get through.
