NYDOL: Reapplying for unemployment as a 90% disabled vet in MBA program after 26 weeks?
Hey everyone, I'm a veteran with a 90% disability rating and I'm currently working on my MBA. I just finished my 26 weeks of unemployment benefits and waited for 2 months before trying to reapply. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with reapplying for unemployment while being a disabled vet and a student? Any advice on how to navigate this situation would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

First off, thank you for your service! šŗšø I've been through a similar situation. Here's what I learned: ⢠Being a student doesn't automatically disqualify you from unemployment, but you need to be able and available for work. ⢠Your disability status might actually help your case, as there are special considerations for disabled veterans. ⢠When you reapply, make sure to have all your documents ready: DD-214, disability documentation, and proof of school enrollment. ⢠Be prepared to explain how your MBA program doesn't interfere with your ability to work. ⢠Ask about any veteran-specific programs or resources they might have. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

ā¢Wow, thank you so much for this detailed response! It's really helpful to hear from someone who's been in a similar boat. I'll definitely make sure to have all those documents ready. Do you remember if they asked you any specific questions about your school schedule?

ā¢Glad I could help! Yes, they did ask about my class schedule. They wanted to know if I had any daytime classes that might interfere with a typical 9-5 job. If your classes are mostly evenings or online, that's usually better for your case.

ā¢This is great advice! I'd also add that you should mention any job search efforts you've made. Shows you're actively looking for work while studying.

I'm not in your exact situation, but I did reapply after my initial 26 weeks. They asked me a bunch of questions about why I hadn't found work yet. Be prepared to explain that in detail. Also, heads up, the wait times to talk to someone are insane rn

ā¢Pro tip: I found a way to skip the wait times! There's this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that calls for you, waits on hold, and then connects you when a real person picks up. It costs $20 but saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

ā¢Wait, seriously? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

ā¢Yeah, I was skeptical at first too, but it really works. I've used it twice now. Saved me so much time and stress.

ā¢Idk man, paying to talk to unemployment seems kinda sketchy...

ā¢I get the concern, but for me, it was worth it. Time is money, and I'd rather pay $20 than waste a whole day on hold. But to each their own!

Quick question - have you checked if your school has any resources for veteran students? Some universities have specific offices that can help navigate these kinds of situations.

Hey, fellow vet here (though not disabled). Just wanted to say don't let the bureaucracy get you down. Keep pushing and advocating for yourself. You've got this! šŖ
