NYDOL: 8 weeks, no determination on UI claim. 1099 contractor. Help?
I've been waiting 8 weeks for my unemployment claim determination and still nothing. They told me it would take longer because my last job was as a 1099 contractor, but this is ridiculous. I'm getting worried about my finances. Anyone else dealing with long wait times? Any advice on how to speed things up or what to expect?

8 weeks is def longer than usual. Have you tried calling them? Sometimes you gotta be persistent to get answers.

ā¢Pro tip: call right when they open. I got through after only 30 mins on hold that way.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

ā¢Sounds sketchy. Is it legit?

ā¢Yeah, it's totally legit. I was skeptical too but it saved me hours of frustration.

ā¢Why should we have to pay to talk to unemployment? The system is so broken š¤®

Here's what you need to know about 1099 contractor claims: ⢠They take longer because they need to verify your income ⢠Make sure you have all your 1099 forms and any contracts ⢠You might need to provide additional proof of income ⢠Your benefit amount might be different than W-2 employees ⢠There's a chance you might not qualify, depending on your specific situation Best thing to do is keep trying to contact them for updates. Document everything. If it goes past 12 weeks, consider reaching out to your local representative for help. Hang in there! The system is swamped right now.

When you claim weekly, does it ask if you made more than $504? That might be your benefit rate if approved. Just a heads up.

Oscar Murphy
ā¢Yeah, it does ask that. Does that mean I'd get $504 a week?

ā¢Not necessarily. It's just the max benefit. Your actual amount depends on your base period wages.

word of advice: start looking for work if you haven't already. UI is taking forever these days and you don't wanna be left high and dry if they deny you.

This happened to me last year. Turns out they had my address wrong and all the mail was going to my old place. Double check your contact info!
