NY unemployment weekly certification problems - anyone else locked out?
Has anyone had issues certifying for NY unemployment benefits this week? I've been trying since Sunday morning but keep getting an error message saying 'We are experiencing high volume. Please try again later.' It's now Wednesday and I still can't get through. I'm worried about missing my certification window and losing this week's benefits. Is the system down for everyone or just me? Getting super anxious about this!

•Good to know I'm not alone, but still frustrating. Have you tried calling them? I've been on hold for over an hour today.

I've had the SAME PROBLEM for TWO WEEKS now!! The online system is completely broken and nobody at NYSDOL seems to care. I've called over 20 times and either get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting on hold forever. This is ridiculous - they expect us to certify on time but then make it impossible to do so. I'm missing payments I desperately need because their system is garbage.

•If you're having trouble certifying online, try certifying during non-peak hours - very early morning (4-6am) or late evening (10pm-midnight). The system typically has maintenance windows on Tuesdays from 12am-7am, so avoid those times. Also, clear your browser cache and cookies before trying again. If you've missed certification weeks, you can request backdating by submitting secure message through your account explaining the technical issues.

•Thanks for the suggestion, but I've already tried at 5am and 11pm with no luck. Still getting error messages. I'll try clearing my cache though, maybe that'll help.

I'm having the same problem but I found out they're doing a system update this week. My neighbor works for the unemployment office and said they're upgrading something in the certification system. Should be back to normal by Friday supposedly.

•Thank you for the info! I wish they would send out notifications about these updates. Did your neighbor say if we'll be able to backdate our certifications once the system is working again?

This is a common issue during the first week of each quarter when system loads are highest. The certification system should stabilize soon, but here's what you need to know to protect your benefits: 1. You have until Saturday at midnight to certify for the previous week 2. If you miss that window, you can request backdating through secure message or by phone 3. Document your attempts to certify (screenshots of errors if possible) 4. If you need to reach a representative urgently, try calling exactly at 8:00 AM when lines open 5. Use the automated phone certification system as a backup (1-888-581-5812 for touch-tone phones) The phone system tends to be more reliable during website outages.

•Thank you so much for this detailed information! I didn't know about the phone certification option. I'll try that right away. Do you know if the automated system will give me confirmation that my certification went through?

•Yes, the automated phone system will provide a confirmation number at the end of your certification. Write this number down as proof of your certification. You should also receive an email confirmation within 24 hours if you have email notifications enabled in your account settings.

I had the same problem last month and after trying for days I finally gave up and tried Claimyr to get through to an agent. It cost money but honestly it was worth it not to lose my benefits. The agent was able to process my certification over the phone and also filed for the previous week I missed. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - basically they hold your place in line and call you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration.

•Is that service legit? Seems sketchy to pay money to get through to unemployment when it should be free...

•I was skeptical too but it worked for me. They don't handle your benefits - they just get you connected to an actual NYSDOL agent. Then you deal directly with the agent for your claim issues. The website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

•Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try the automated phone system first since it's free, but if that doesn't work, I might consider this option. Did you get through quickly?

•Got the callback in about 2 hours. Way better than the 100+ redials I was doing before.

I help people with NY unemployment issues regularly, and there's currently a known issue with the certification system that NYSDOL is working to resolve. While you wait for it to be fixed, here are your options: 1. Try the automated phone certification system at 1-888-581-5812 2. Request backdating through secure message in your account 3. Document all error messages you receive REMEMBER: Even if you certify late due to system issues, NYSDOL can backdate your certification without penalty if you explain the technical problems. Just be sure to certify as soon as the system allows you to do so. Also, if you're using a mobile device to certify, try switching to a desktop computer or different browser. Some users report success with Edge or Firefox when Chrome fails.

•This is really helpful, thank you. I'll definitely try the phone system and switch browsers. I've been using Chrome on my laptop but will try Firefox now.

btw has anyone noticed the payment amounts are different this year? i got $63 less this week than normal and cant figure out why

•That could be due to the 2025 benefit recalculation that took effect in April. NYSDOL adjusts benefit amounts quarterly based on reported wages. Check your payment history in your online account - there should be a notification explaining any changes to your benefit rate.

UPDATE: I was finally able to certify! The automated phone system worked on my second try. For anyone else having this problem, definitely try calling 1-888-581-5812. Thanks everyone for your help!

•Glad to hear you got through! For future reference, always keep the automated phone certification system as a backup option. The online system usually returns to normal within 48-72 hours after these types of outages.
