NY unemployment payment delay after address change - anyone else?

I moved from Rochester to Buffalo in November due to my partner getting a new job. Updated my address on the ny unemployment portal the same week we moved. It's been almost 4 weeks since and my payments suddenly stopped coming through. I've been certifying every week like normal but nothing is hitting my account. Called the unemployment office 14 times now and can never get through to a human. My rent is due next week and I'm starting to panic. Has this happened to anyone else when you changed your address? How long did it take to resolve? Any tricks to actually speak to someone who can help?

Omg literally going thru same thing right now. Changed my address in October when I moved back with my parents in Albany and my payments just stopped. Been 3 weeks of nothing. I think its a security measure cause of all the fraud but its like... I NEED THAT MONEY TO LIVE??

Its so frustrating! Did u try uploading additional ID verification? I'm wondering if that might help speed things up

ya I uploaded my license + SS card last week but still nothing. I think we literally have to talk to a human to fix it 😭

Same boat! 5 weeks no payment after moving from Queens to Long Island. System is completely broken.

After dealing with the NY unemployment system for over a year, I finally found a solution that worked for me. I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was seriously a game changer. They called the unemployment office on my behalf, waited through the hold times, and then connected me directly to an agent. Talking to an agent got my payments unlocked within 48 hours after weeks of nothing. They even have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

this sounds like an ad lol. does this actually work??

I was skeptical too but yes it actually works. I was desperate after trying for 3 weeks to get through on my own. Worth every penny considering I was about to miss rent.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch, you pay them to deal with the hold times instead of wasting your own day. When they get an agent they connect the call to your phone. My claim was fixed in one call.

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

I get the skepticism but this is a real service. They don't access your account or anything, they just get you past the phone system nightmare so you can actually talk to a rep.

Yep this is standard procedure. Address changes trigger a security review. It's basically flagged as potential fraud. The ONLY way to fix it is to talk to a claims specialist. Not just any rep, but specifically a claims specialist who can manually remove the hold. Pro Tip: Call right when they open at 8am and use the prompts for "payment issues" not "change of address" - that'll get you to the right department faster.

Anyone else notice its taking longer to process EVERYTHING on unemployment lately? Seems like they fired half their staff or something. When I had an address change last year it took maybe 4-5 days max to process, now people are waiting months 🤬

They DID cut staff! I read somewhere they reduced the workforce by like 30% since most COVID claims are done. But regular unemployment is still a mess.

its almost like they WANT it to be impossible to use the system 🤔

When i changed my address it triggered a "identity verification" thing where they made me upload a ton of documents and video chat with someone. Check your email and portal messages - there might be a request for additional info hiding there that you missed. Mine was in my spam folder lol

Thanks for this! Just checked and there WAS an email in my spam from 2 weeks ago. Gonna upload the docs now and hope that helps

Anyone having this issue NEEDS to speak with an actual human at unemployment. Full stop. Don't waste time with emails or the online system. Here's what works: 1. After weeks of frustration, I found claimyr.com which calls for you and connects you when there's a human on the line (saved me hours of hold time) 2. When you get a rep, specifically ask for the "address verification department" - most regular reps can't help with this 3. Have ready: your old address, new address, date you submitted the change, and proof of your new address (utility bill, lease) 4. Be polite but firm about needing this resolved - mention financial hardship 5. If they say it'll take 2-3 weeks, ask if there's any way to expedite due to financial hardship In my case, they were able to verify my address change in real-time and my payments resumed 2 days later. Don't wait - the longer this sits in their system flagged, the harder it gets to fix. Good luck!

Can confirm this is THE way. Just got through using claimyr.com after 3 weeks of nothing. My backpay is scheduled to hit my account Tuesday!

i swear the ny unemployment system runs on Windows 95 and duct tape 💀

You're giving them too much credit. It's clearly Windows 3.1 😂

As someone who works in IT, I can tell you their systems are mostly from the 1980s running on COBOL. No joke. That's why everything breaks constantly.

COBOL?? i had to google what that even is. thats actually terrifying that our benefits depend on dinosaur computers 🦖

Went through this nightmare when I moved last August. The address change triggered their fraud detection and put my account on hold. Took 7 weeks to resolve and I almost got evicted. Send a message through the portal EVERY DAY asking for help. Eventually someone will notice.

try contacting yr state senator's office!! worked for me when i was stuck in limbo for 2 months. They have special contacts at unemployment who can push things through

This is the real pro tip. My state assembly person fixed my UI issue in 3 days after I'd been trying for weeks on my own. They have a direct line to the higher ups at DOL.

there's a secret backdoor number that sometimes works: 888-###-#### (option 2, then 1, then 4, then social, then wait). Apparently its the line for "escalated claims" but they'll sometimes help with address issues too. I got through after only 45 min on hold last Tuesday.

0 coins

That number is hit or miss. I tried it yesterday and after 1hr on hold, the person said they couldn't help with address issues and transferred me... to a dead line 😑

CHECK YOUR PAYMENT METHOD TOO!!!!! Sometimes when you change your address it resets your payment preferences to the debit card instead of direct deposit. Took me forever to realize my money was sitting on a card I never activated 🤦‍♀️

Just checked and mine still shows direct deposit. But good tip!

Dont waste time trying to call them. I waited on hold for 4hrs yesterday only to be disconnected. I finally broke down and used claimyr.com after seeing it mentioned here. Got a callback with an actual agent within 40 mins. He fixed my address issue and now my payments are processing again. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after weeks of trying.

This is SO frustrating but unfortunately super common with NY unemployment. I went through the exact same thing last year when I moved from Syracuse to NYC. The address change basically puts your account under review for fraud prevention, but they don't tell you that! What finally worked for me was calling first thing at 8am sharp and selecting the "technical issues" option instead of the general line - seemed to have shorter wait times. Also make sure you have ALL your documents ready: lease agreement, utility bill with new address, photo ID, etc. In the meantime, definitely reach out to your local assembly member's office like others mentioned. They have direct contacts at DOL and can often get things moving faster. Don't give up - your backpay should come through once they verify everything. Hang in there! 💪

Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'm definitely going to try calling at 8am sharp tomorrow and use the technical issues option - that's a great tip I hadn't heard before. I've been trying the general line which explains why I can never get through. Also going to look up my assembly member today. It's reassuring to hear that the backpay should come through eventually, I was starting to worry it was just gone forever. Really appreciate you taking the time to share what worked for you! 🙏
