NY unemployment forcing me to do my 4th job search interview in just 2 months - is this normal?

I'm getting really annoyed with these constant job search interviews from unemployment. Started collecting benefits in July after my company downsized, and since then I've already done 3 separate job search interviews - first one was over phone in August, second was in-person at their office in early September, and the third one was a phone interview in late September. The agent on my third call specifically told me that would be my final interview. Now just got a letter yesterday saying I need to do ANOTHER phone interview next week which would be my 4th! Has anyone else been hassled this much? Is this even normal? Seems excessive to keep checking every few weeks when I'm actively applying to jobs and following all the rules. These interviews are basically the same questions every time and take time away from my actual job search.

same thing happened to me! I had 4 interviews in 3 months last year. I think they do it when they're short-staffed and different agents dont communicate with each other. Super frustrating but you gotta do it or they'll cut your benefits.

That's what I'm worried about - don't wanna lose benefits. Did you end up having to do more than 4?

Nah just the 4. After that I finally got a job thank god, so the unemployment nightmare ended. Good luck!

I had SIX interviews last year! Beat that 🏆 The whole system is a nightmare designed to make u quit

After weeks of getting nowhere with NY unemployment and having the same problem with endless interviews, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual agent who fixed everything. Talking to a real person got my issues sorted in one call instead of these endless interviews. Best thing I spent money on - got my benefits flowing again and the agent even noted in my file that I'd completed all interview requirements. Check out this video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait is this fr? i've been trying to talk to someone for 2 weeks with no luck

0 coins

Yeah 100% worked for me. They basically call NYSDOL and wait on hold for you, then when they get someone they connect the call to your phone. Saved me hours of hold time.

sounds like another scam trying to prey on desperate people 🙄

0 coins

Not a scam at all. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for 3 weeks to reach someone. They don't ask for any personal info except your phone number to transfer the call. It literally just gets you past the hold times.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS?

0 coins

It worked for me! I was able to speak with an agent who fixed all my issues in one call. Seriously worth checking out if you're stuck.

They're doing this shit on purpose to make people give up. The more hoops they make you jump through the more ppl will just stop collecting. Makes their numbers look better when less people are on benefits. Corrupt system.

I think its normal unfortunately. My roommate had 5 interviews in 4 months. Sometimes different departments dont talk to each other. It's annoying but just do it and answer all quesions the same as you did before. Consistency is key.

0 coins

5 interviews?? That's insane. Did your roommate ever figure out how to stop them from happening?

0 coins

She finally complained to a supervisor during the 5th interview and they put a note in her file. No more interviews after that.

I had this EXACT problem. I actually missed the 4th call because I was at a job interview (ironic right?) and they suspended my benefits. Took me 6 weeks to get them back. So def take the call even tho its stupid af.

0 coins

That's terrifying... I won't miss it but this is so frustrating

If ur benefits get suspended try claimyr.com to get thru to an agent fast. saved my life when this happened to me

This happened to my brother too. After the third one he specifically asked "is this the last one?" and the agent said yes, then bam, two weeks later another appointment. The system is completly broken. 🤦‍♂️

Look at your mail/email VERY carefully. Sometimes they send notices for different types of reviews/interviews. There's regular work search verification, then there's benefit eligibility interviews, and then sometimes there's special audits. They all sound similar but are actually different things.

0 coins

Hmm I'll double check but they all seemed like the same basic interview where they ask about jobs I've applied to.

0 coins

Yea they ask similar questions but check the letterhead/department. If they come from different units that would explain it.

This is why NY unemployment is such a disaster. I'd recommend keeping detailed notes of EVERY interview - who you spoke with (name/ID#), date/time, what was discussed, and especially if they told you it was your last interview. Then when you get on the next call you can reference that info and ask them to check their notes.

Is the 4th interview with a different phone number than the others? I got something similar but it turned out to be a SCAM trying to get my personal info. Be careful!!

It's from the same official number and matches the official letterhead, but thanks for the warning!

If you wanna actually fix this instead of just complaining (no offense), here's what worked for me: First, document everything. Every call, letter, and interview. Names and ID numbers of everyone you talk to. Second, during your next interview, calmly but firmly explain this is your 4th interview, that you were told the 3rd was your last, and ask them to check their system notes. Third, ask to speak to a supervisor if the regular agent doesn't help. Fourth, if all else fails, contact your state representative's office. They can often cut through the bureaucracy. Fifth, as a last resort, try claimyr.com to get connected to an actual decision-maker who can help. The service costs money but it bypasses the hold times and gets you to someone who can actually fix things in the system. Whatever you do, DO NOT miss the interview, even if it seems redundant, as that will definitely cause problems with your benefits. Good luck!

Thank you for this detailed advice. I'll definitely try these steps!

This is solid advice. Especially the part about contacting your state rep - most people don't realize they can help with unemployment issues.

the entire NY unemployment department must be run by clowns 🤡 sorry ur dealing with this bs

i've been on unemployment three times in the past decade and i've NEVER had more than two interviews total. something weird is going on with your claim. do u have any previous issues or flags on your account?

0 coins

Not that I know of. My claim was pretty straightforward - laid off due to downsizing. I report my work search activities every week and have never missed a deadline.

0 coins

huh thats super weird then. might be worth asking directly if there's a flag on your account during the next interview.

0 coins

Make sure you're keeping ALL your job search documentation - screenshots of applications, confirmation emails, contact info for places you've applied, etc. They might be targeting you for an audit (which is what all these interviews sound like). Hope it resolves soon!

In my experience with ny unemployment, the right hand never knows what the left is doing. Just keep answering their stupid calls and eventually they'll leave you alone. So inefficient tho.

THIS!!! I swear they do this on purpose to discourage ppl from claiming benefits they're entitled to 😡
