Why is ny unemployment making me do FOUR job search interviews in just 90 days?
I'm getting so frustrated with these constant job search interviews. Got laid off in February and started collecting unemployment in March. Since then, they've made me do 3 job search interviews already - first one by phone in early April, then an in-person one at the end of April, and another phone one in mid-May where the interviewer specifically told me "this will be your final interview." Now I just got a letter yesterday saying I need to do a FOURTH interview by phone next week. This is ridiculous! I'm actively applying to jobs (more than the required number each week) and documenting everything properly. Has anyone else been forced to do this many interviews in such a short timeframe? Is there any way to stop this harassment? These interviews are cutting into time I could be using to actually find employment.

Yeahhh this is actually getting super common lately. I had to do 3 over 2 months which was annoying af. My friend had 5!!! I think they're just being extra strict these days and trying to catch people slipping up. Just keep all your job search records super organized and you'll be fine.

•5 interviews? That's insane! Did your friend ever find out why they were targeting them so much?

•Nah they never gave her a straight answer. Just kept saying it was "random selection" but we all know that's BS. Think they just flag certain industries or somethin 🤷♀️

•its definitely NOT random. my wife had zero interviews and I had 4 in the same household. system is broken af 🤡

After weeks of getting nowhere with the phone lines, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was a game changer. They got me connected to an actual agent who explained why I was getting flagged for multiple interviews - turns out there was a note on my account about my previous employer contesting my claim. Got it resolved in one call. Best money I've spent to get my benefits sorted quickly. Check out their process: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this or is it some scam?

•I was skeptical too but was desperate after spending literally 14+ hours on hold over several days. It's just a service that calls and waits on hold for you, then connects you when a real person picks up. Saved me from losing my mind with those awful hold times.

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? unemployment system is such a mess that I'm desperate tho

•The difference is it actually works lol. They don't do anything except call and wait on hold, then connect you when someone answers. Talking to a real human solved my issue in 10 minutes after weeks of frustration.

•THIS!!! Used it last month when my benefits suddenly stopped. Got through to someone who fixed it on the spot. Before that I was calling 50+ times a day getting nowhere.

I had this EXACT same issue last summer. It's a glitch in their system. Some accounts get flagged for "enhanced verification" and then you're stuck in this endless loop of interviews. The only way I got it resolved was by speaking to a supervisor.

The whole NY unemployment system is designed to be as difficult and frustrating as possible. They WANT you to give up claiming benefits. Multiple interviews is just one tactic they use. Keep pushing back and ask why you're being targeted for so many interviews when others aren't.

•💯 THIS. They make everything complicated on purpose to discourage people. Less people claiming = more $ they save.

•not a conspiracy theory if its true 👀 They literally redesigned the website to be more confusing back in 2019

I'm dealing with this nonsense right now too! Just had my 3rd interview yesterday and the lady was super rude asking why I turned down a job that paid $5 less per hour than my previous position. Like hello??? Am I supposed to accept any job regardless of pay??

•They can't actually force you to take jobs that pay significantly less than your previous employment. There's a rule about "suitable employment" - look it up on the NY DOL website and cite it next time.

•omg thank you!! will def look that up before my next interview 🙏

Here's what's actually happening with these multiple interviews (I used to work for NYSDOL): Their system now flags accounts based on various triggers that might indicate potential issues. Some triggers are: - If you worked in certain high-fraud industries (hospitality, gig work) - If you had breaks in your work history before COVID - If your previous employer submitted any type of response to your claim - If your weekly certifications show any pattern they deem "suspicious" - If your IP address changes frequently when you certify The best solution is getting on the phone with someone who can see the specific flag on your account and address it directly. Unfortunately, the phone system is absolutely overwhelmed. I'd recommend using Claimyr.com to get through - it's what many of my former colleagues suggest to people who are stuck in these loops. Once you speak to someone, specifically ask WHY you're being selected for multiple interviews and request that a note be added to your file indicating you've been compliant and shouldn't require additional interviews.

•Thank you for this detailed explanation! This makes so much sense now. My previous employer did contest my claim initially (then dropped it when I provided documentation). I'll definitely try Claimyr to get through to someone who can remove whatever flag is on my account.

•wait so if my previous boss is a jerk and contests my claim even if they KNOW I was laid off, I get punished with endless interviews? that's messed up

•Exactly. The system automatically puts your account into enhanced verification mode if there's any employer response, even if that response doesn't ultimately affect your eligibility. It's one of many flaws in the system.

looool welcome to the club. i had SIX interviews last year. SIX!!!! eventually i just stopped claiming rather than deal with the harassment. the system works exactly as intended - they frustrate you until you give up.

Ask them point blank if you're being investigated for fraud. If they say no, ask why you're being targeted for multiple interviews and request documentation justifying why you specifically are being selected repeatedly when the standard is 1-2 interviews max.

•This is solid advice. Also request the name and ID number of everyone you speak with. Documentation is key.

I know this is frustrating but try to stay calm during these interviews. They're sometimes looking for people to get angry so they can document "uncooperative behavior" which can lead to benefit delays. Just keep answering their questions politely even though its annoying af.

This happened to me too! Turns out my account got flagged because I'd certified from two different devices (my phone when I was out of town for a family emergency, then my laptop when I got back). The system thought it was suspicious activity. Such BS.

•omg are you serious? so we cant even use different devices to certify now? this is getting ridiculous 🤦♂️

•Yep! Apparently using different IP addresses triggers their "fraud detection" system. No one tells us these rules tho!

NYSDOL has been outsourcing some of their interview processes to third-party contractors who get paid per interview. Sounds like you might be caught in that money-making scheme. Demand to speak with an actual DOL employee not a contractor.

•wait is this for real? how do you know if you're talking to a contractor vs an actual DOL employee?

Elliott luviBorBatman
•The contractors usually don't have access to your full file and can't make determinations on the spot. They just collect info. Real DOL staff can tell you specifics about your claim and resolve issues immediately.

I recorded all my interviews (legal in NY as long as you inform them) and it made a HUGE difference in how I was treated. First 2 interviews the staff were total jerks. After I started saying "just so you know I'm recording this call for my records" they became super helpful lol

honestly, NY unemployment is such a nightmare lately. I finally got thru to someone after trying for weeks using claimyr.com... talking to an actual human solved everything in like 5 minutes. The system is designed to be impossible to navigate without help.

•another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol... does this actually work?

•It's not a fix for the unemployment system - it just gets you past the impossible phone system. They call and wait on hold (took 3 hours for me) then connect you when a human answers. That's it. But actually talking to someone solved my problem immediately.

Submit a complaint to your state representative/senator. Seriously. I was stuck in an interview loop (had 5 over 4 months) and nothing fixed it until I complained to my state senator's office. They have special contacts at NYSDOL and got it resolved in 3 days.

•THIS is the real answer. The DOL responds to political pressure. Find your rep here: nysenate.gov/find-my-senator

My theory is they're hoping youll miss one of these interviews so they can cut you off. Be super careful to attend all of them even tho its annoying AF
