NY unemployment benefits ending soon - zero job offers after 4 months of interviews

Feeling desperate as my unemployment benefits are about to expire in 3 weeks. I've had 17 interviews since April and nothing has come through. Some companies never respond, others go with internal candidates, and a few said I was overqualified. I've already cut expenses to the bone - cancelled streaming services, stopped eating out, sold my gaming console. Still have rent, utilities, car payment, and insurance that won't magically disappear. My savings are basically gone after paying for car repairs last month. Applied to retail and fast food but they either don't call back or say I'm overqualified. I'm starting to worry about how I'll even afford groceries. Anyone else in this situation? What are you planning to do when benefits run out? Any suggestions for quick income sources while still job hunting?

I hear you. Its brutal out there. I've been looking since March and finally landed something last week but its a temp position paying way less than I was making before. The competition for every single job is insane right now. Have you tried amazon warehouse jobs? They usually hire pretty quick and the pay isnt terrible for a stopgap.

Congrats on the temp position! At least it's something. I applied to Amazon twice but never heard back. Might try again with a different location.

Amazon is hit or miss depending on the warehouse. My cousin got hired within 2 days at one location, I applied to another and crickets for weeks 🦗

yeah its real weird with them. My roommate got hired without even an interview and I had to do 3 interviews for the same position at a different location. Just keep trying different warehouses!

After 2 months of getting nowhere with ny unemployment phone lines and email support, I tried this service called Claimyr. They basically call and wait on hold for you, then connect you to a live agent when someone picks up. Talking to a real person finally got my benefits extended by 13 weeks! Best money I ever spent to avoid losing my apartment. Check out their process here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this actually real? Sounds too good to be true tbh

100% real. I was skeptical too but was desperate after calling 47 times in one day and never getting through. They had me on the phone with an agent in about 90 minutes. The agent told me I qualified for an extension I didn't even know about.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've been trying to reach someone for weeks about my extension

I was in the same boat, calling endlessly. It worked for me - got me through to an agent who fixed everything in one call. The unemployment office apparently has these extensions they can approve but you have to actually talk to someone. claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

I tried it last month when I was desperate. They actually don't do anything except call and wait on hold, then connect you when a human answers. Saved me like 3 hours of hold music torture.

Have you tried doing gig work? DoorDash, Instacart, etc? It's not great money but it can help bridge the gap. I've been doing that on weekends while still collecting partial unemployment and job hunting during the week.

This whole system is broken. Companies are "hiring" but not actually hiring. They post jobs, collect applications, do interviews, then decide they don't have budget or hire internally. Meanwhile NY unemployment acts like there are plenty of jobs out there. Then the benefits run out and we're all supposed to what...starve? 😤

PREACH! I swear half these job postings are fake. I applied to 200+ jobs in 3 months and got 5 interviews that went nowhere.

My theory is they're legally required to post jobs publicly but already have someone in mind. Total waste of our time.

This is exactly what I suspect too. So many interviews where they seemed completely disinterested from the start.

Its all about the numbers game. Companies get hundreds of applications for entry level positions. And yeah they do that internal hiring BS all the time. Keep pushing applications out, something will stick eventually.

Check if you qualify for SNAP benefits (food stamps). That can at least help with groceries while you figure out the rest. Also look into local food pantries - they're not just for homeless people, they're for exactly situations like yours.

Thank you, I'll look into SNAP. Do you know if unemployment counts as income for that program?

Yes unemployment counts as income but once it runs out you should qualify if you have little/no income. Apply now so it's in process - the approval can take weeks.

You might qualify for an extension! I was in the same spot 2 months ago and found out there's a 13-week extension available if you meet certain criteria. The problem is you HAVE to talk to someone on the phone to get it approved. I spent 3 weeks trying to get through the phone lines with no luck. Finally found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which is this service that calls unemployment for you and connects you when they reach a human. Got through to an agent in about an hour who reviewed my case and approved my extension on the spot. My payments started again the next week. The unemployment office never tells you about these extensions - you have to specifically ask. Other things to try: - Check with your utility companies about hardship programs - Apply for SNAP benefits - Look into rental assistance programs - Consider temp agencies that can place you quickly - Ask about deferring student loans if you have them The job market is brutal right now but don't give up. And definitely try to get an agent on the phone about extensions before your benefits run out.

Thank you for this detailed info! I had no idea about possible extensions. Will definitely check out that service - at this point I'll try anything.

I second this. Got a 13-week extension I never would've known about if I hadn't finally reached someone. The system is designed to be confusing on purpose 🤬

Temp agencies saved me when I was in your shoes. They can usually place you within days, not weeks or months. The pay often sucks and benefits are non-existent, but it's money coming in while you continue looking for something permanent.

Anyone notice how the job market is supposedly "hot" according to the news but everyone here is struggling to find work? Make it make sense 🤔

It's hot for certain industries and ice cold for others. Tech is laying people off while hospitality can't find enough workers. It's weird out there.

have u tried reaching out to previous employers? sometimes they might have positions open up they havent posted yet. thats how i got back in after being on ny unemployment for 5 months

My previous company downsized by 40% - that's why I'm on unemployment. But might be worth checking with places I worked before that.

Did you check if you're eligible for any extensions? NY sometimes has extended benefits periods during times of high unemployment. You have to call them to find out though - the website is useless.

I've been trying to call for days but can't get through. Always disconnects after the automated messages.

try using claimyr.com - it's the only way I ever got through to an actual person at unemployment

When my benefits ran out last year I started doing odd jobs on TaskRabbit - furniture assembly, helping people move, etc. Made decent money and it was flexible enough that I could still go to interviews. Just an idea!
