Still jobless after ny unemployment benefits ended - what are people doing now?

Been out of work since February 2021 when my tech company downsized. I collected unemployment until the extended benefits ended in early September this year. It's been 2 months now with zero income, and I'm really struggling to figure out what to do next. My savings are almost gone, I've applied to over 150 jobs with only a few interviews that went nowhere. The job market in my field still seems terrible, and I'm honestly considering completely switching careers at this point just to get some income flowing again. Has anyone else been in this situation since benefits ran out? What are you doing to survive? Any success stories or advice for someone who feels like they're drowning here?

Still job searching in a different industry. Had to move in with my parents which sucks at 34 but beats being homeless. Applied to over 200 jobs in past 3 months, got 5 interviews, no offers yet. Some days I don't even wanna get outta bed anymore tbh.

Same boat. Moved back with my mom last month. Feels like going backwards in life but what choice do we have? Been applying everywhere including retail and fast food.

don't be so hard on yourself. this economy is trash and living with family is smart. save that money while you can, and keep grinding on applications.

I was in exactly your shoes until about 3 weeks ago. Exhausted all my benefits and couldn't get anyone on the phone to help. Finally got through to a real person at NY unemployment using a service called claimyr.com which got me a callback from an agent. They were able to fix an issue with my claim and got my backdated payments processed! It was the only way I could talk to an actual human there. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds sketchy af...has anyone else tried this? 🤔

Ravi Kapoor

Not sketchy at all! It just calls the dept for you and stays on hold, then rings your phone when an agent picks up. Saved me from wasting hours listening to that awful hold music.

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch - they just do the waiting for you. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast it was totally worth it for me.

I used this last month when I couldn't get thru for 3 weeks straight. Actually worked. Got my issue fixed in one call after the callback.

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

You do you, but this isn't a hack - it's just a service that calls and waits on hold for you. I was skeptical too until I tried it.

I found a part-time gig doing food delivery and some online freelance work. Not making anywhere near what I was before, but it's keeping me afloat for now. Also applied for SNAP benefits which has helped with groceries at least.

Our wonderful government doesnt care about us so I'm trying to get by with gig work. doing doordash, instacart, and taskrabbit. barely keeping my head above watter but at least its something. try reaching out to local food banks too, they've been a lifesaver for me.

Food banks have been crucial for me too. Also check if your utility companies have assistance programs - I got my electric bill reduced by like 30%.

Look, I'm gonna be real with you. The system is BROKEN. I was collecting until September too and now I'm working at Amazon warehouse making way less than my old job paid. It's physically destroying me but at least it's something. My advice? Take ANYTHING right now, even if it feels beneath you, then keep looking for something better. You can't be picky in this economy.

THIS!!! Pride won't pay your rent. I was a marketing manager, now I'm stocking shelves overnight at Target. It sucks but I'm surviving.

That's honestly what I'm starting to realize. Thanks for being straight with me. Gonna start applying to literally anything tomorrow.

You got this. Just remember it's temporary. Keep looking for something better while you work the stopgap job.

I've been struggling with the EXACT same issue! Here's what I've been doing (and what's actually helped): First, I contacted my landlord and worked out a payment plan. Most landlords would rather work with you than evict you right now. Check out local workforce development programs. I found one that's paying for me to get IT certification, which should help me pivot to a new career. Apply for SNAP/food stamps immediately if you haven't already. The process is pretty quick in NY now. If you're still trying to resolve issues with your past unemployment claims, don't waste days calling the regular line. I used claimyr.com after a friend recommended it, and it got me connected to an agent who fixed my claim issue in minutes. It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly. Also, don't be afraid to take temporary work below your usual pay grade. I'm doing data entry part-time while I finish this certification program. Hang in there. This situation is temporary, even though it feels never-ending right now.

That IT cert program sounds great. How did you find that? I've been looking for something like that.

Check your local American Job Center - they usually have info on these programs. Mine is through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA

Thank you so much for all this info - especially the tip about workforce development programs. I hadn't even thought about that route.

I'm not sure if this helps but I've been volunteering at a few places while job hunting. Helps fill resume gaps and I've made some connections that might lead to paid work. Plus it keeps me from going insane at home refreshing job boards all day.

Smart move! What kind of places are you volunteering at?

Local food bank and a nonprofit that helps seniors with technology. The nonprofit actually just offered me a part-time paid position starting next month!

have u tried calling ny unemployment to see if there are any other programs ur eligible for? sometimes they have stuff that isnt advertised online

I've tried calling about 50 times but can never get through to a person. Just endless hold times until I get disconnected.

Try claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold for you and call when they get an agent. That's how I finally got through last month.

Contacted my student loan servicer and got on an income-based repayment plan (currently $0/month since I have no income). Also reached out to all my credit cards to get hardship plans. Most reduced my interest rates and some even let me skip a payment or two. Every little bit helps when you're trying to stretch your savings.

Literally eating ramen and sleeping in my car rn. Applied for emergency rental assistance but still waiting. This countries a joke man.

Dude that's rough. There's a subreddit called r/almosthomeless that might have some resources. Also check if your city has any rapid rehousing programs.

Anyone else notice how many job listings are fake af? I swear half the ones I apply to are either already filled or they're just collecting resumes for the future. So frustrating 😤

YES! Or they list a salary range and then offer you the absolute lowest. Or they want 5 years experience for an entry level position 🤡

I'm taking online courses to improve my skills while job hunting. Coursera has some free ones if you select "financial aid" option. LinkedIn Learning also has a free month trial. Just trying to make myself more marketable while I search.

Try 211! They can connect you with all kinds of assistance programs in your area. I called and found out about rental assistance I didn't even know existed.

Went back to school using federal financial aid. Figure if the job market sucks might as well improve my credentials for when things get better. Not easy living on student loans but at least I'm working toward something.

omg the struggle is SO real rn. been working odd jobs through taskrabbit and doing some freelance design work when i can get it. it's barely enough for rent but somehow surviving. the key is to diversify your hustle - don't rely on just one source of income if you can help it.

If ur having trouble w getting back pay from ny unemployment or fixing claim issues, u gotta talk to a human. Spent weeks trying to call with no luck until I found claimyr.com. Got a rep on the phone same day who fixed everything. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast. Wish I'd known about it months ago!

Yeah I used it myself after wasting like 20+ hours trying to call myself. It's just a service that waits on hold so you don't have to.

Check your local churches and community orgs! A lot of them have emergency assistance funds. I got help with my electric bill and some groceries from a catholic charities place and I'm not even religious.

Just a friendly reminder to everyone here to VOTE in your local elections! The people making decisions about unemployment benefits and assistance programs are often at the state level. If we want better safety nets, we need to elect people who will fight for them.
