NYS Department of Labor benefits ended - how did others solve unemployment problems?

My unemployment benefits ran out last month and I'm still searching for work. I've been applying everywhere but haven't gotten any callbacks. I'm wondering how other people have managed to get through extended periods of unemployment when NYS Department of Labor benefits weren't enough or ran out completely. Did anyone find creative solutions or programs I might not know about? I'm getting really stressed about my situation and could use some advice from people who've been in similar spots.

When my benefits ended, I had to get creative. First, check if you're eligible for any state programs beyond regular UI. Also look into workforce development programs through your local One-Stop Career Center - they sometimes have training programs that come with stipends. Food banks and utility assistance programs can help stretch whatever money you have left.

Thanks, I didn't know about the One-Stop centers. Are those connected to NYS Department of Labor or separate?

I was in this exact situation last year. What helped me was expanding my job search beyond my usual field and taking temporary work through staffing agencies while still looking for permanent positions. Also, don't forget about gig work - it's not ideal but it can provide some income while you search.

Good point about temp work. I did warehouse work for a few months when my claim ran out, it kept me afloat until I found something better.

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor about any remaining options, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent when I couldn't get through the phone lines. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Might be worth checking if you have any benefits left or appeal options you don't know about.

Interesting, I'll check that out. I've been trying to call NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my job search requirements but keep getting busy signals.

honestly the whole system is set up to fail people like us. when your benefits run out theyre basically like good luck figure it out yourself. meanwhile cost of living keeps going up but somehow we're supposed to just magically find jobs that dont exist

I feel this so much. Been searching for 8 months now and it's exhausting.

To answer your earlier question about One-Stop centers - they're part of the workforce development system that works with NYS Department of Labor but they're separate locations. You can find your local center through the NY.gov website. They offer job placement services, skills training, and sometimes emergency assistance programs.
