NY unemployment federal benefits ended 9/5 - PUA/PEUC/EB recipients completely locked out of certification system since 9/12

So just found out that all federal unemployment benefits expired on September 5th, per federal law. I knew that was happening, but what I didn't know is that starting Sunday September 12th, everyone who was on federal programs (PUA, PEUC, EB) would be completely locked out of the certification system! I saw this announcement from The Labor department posted about 2 hours ago that states: "ICYMI: Federal benefits expired on 9/5, per federal law. If you were receiving benefits through a federal program, including PUA, PEUC, or EB, you will be unable to certify for benefits in any way (via phone or web) beginning Sunday 9/12." I tried to certify yesterday and kept getting error messages. Called the automated system and same thing - it just says I'm not eligible to certify. The system won't even let me access my account properly! Anyone else dealing with this? Is there any way to still get our remaining balance or are we just cut off completely now? I still had like $1,900 left in my account balance that I thought I could claim. Did they really just shut off all access without any warning? I understand the benefits expired but I thought we could at least claim what was remaining in our balance.

Same thing happened to me. I had about $2,350 left in my balance and now I can't access it at all. The system just keeps rejecting my certification attempts. Called over 20 times yesterday and couldn't get thru to anyone. This is so frustrating!

Did you try the automated phone line? That's not working for me either. Just curious if anyone's having success with any method.

The phone line is useless. I've tried calling at different times (early morning, late night) and it's always the same result - either busy signal or it hangs up on me after the menu.

Yeah tried both web and phone. Both just say I'm ineligible to certify now. Think we're just screwed tbh 🤮

After struggling with this exact problem I finally found a solution. I used Claimyr.com and it was a game changer. They called NY unemployment for me, waited on hold, then connected me to a real person. The agent explained that once federal programs end, the remaining balance isn't available anymore. It's frustrating but at least I got a clear answer. Talking to an agent got my questions answered right away instead of guessing. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

This sounds kinda sketchy ngl. Does that actually work? I've been burned before by these "services" that promise to help with unemployment.

I was skeptical too but it actually worked for me. It's just a call service that waits on hold for you then transfers when an agent picks up. Saved me literally hours of hold time. The agent confirmed what I suspected - once federal programs end, that money's gone.

How long did it take to get a callback? Been trying to reach someone for over a week with no luck.

0 coins

Got my callback in about 2.5 hours. Way better than the days I spent trying to call myself. Worth every penny since I finally got a straight answer about my benefits.

another unemployment "miracle solution" yeah right... what makes this any different from all the other scams out there?

0 coins

It's just a hold service, not a miracle cure. They just wait on hold so you don't have to. The NY unemployment system is still broken but at least this helps you talk to someone. Check the reviews if you're skeptical - claimyr.com

Unfortunately, once federal benefits expire, you lose access to any remaining balance. It's not like regular UI where you're entitled to a certain amount - these emergency programs had a hard end date. Sucks but that's how they designed it.

i still dont understand why they would completely lock us out of the system tho?? i get that the benefits ended but why cant we even log in to see our past payment history? makes no sense

Classic government efficiency 🤡 They probably just found it easier to block access entirely rather than modify the system to show your history but prevent new claims

You should still be able to view your payment history on the main dashboard. Try logging in through the main portal instead of going straight to the weekly certification page.

The whole system is designed to make people give up. I had about $1,200 left in my account too, and now it's just gone. Welcome to America where they dangle help in front of you and then snatch it away. 👍

facts. they want us desperate enough to take any job no matter how bad the pay or conditions. its all by design.

For everyone struggling with this issue, here's what I've learned after spending WAY too much time researching this: When federal benefits expired on September 5th, they completely cut off access to those funds. Any remaining balance you had is essentially gone - it's not like regular unemployment where you have a set amount you're entitled to regardless of timing. If you were on regular UI (not one of the federal pandemic programs), you might still be able to certify, but everyone on PUA, PEUC, or EB is now completely cut off from the certification system. Your best options now: 1. If you think there's a mistake or you should still be eligible for regular UI, you NEED to speak with an agent. I wasted days trying to call before I used claimyr.com and finally got through. They just wait on hold and call you when an agent picks up - saved me hours of frustration. 2. Check if you qualify for other assistance programs like SNAP or rental assistance - many have expanded eligibility. 3. Your payment history should still be viewable by logging into your main account (not through the certification portal). The system is incredibly frustrating but at least knowing what's happening might save some of you the time I wasted trying to certify for benefits that are completely gone now.

This should be pinned at the top. Thanks for the clear explanation!

does this mean those of us who were on regular UI can still certify? I'm so confused about which program I was actually on

0 coins

If you were on regular UI and haven't exhausted your 26 weeks, you should still be able to certify. Log in and try - if it lets you, you're good. If not, you were probably on one of the federal extensions.

the fact that they just cut everyone off with barely any notice is criminal. i had no idea i would lose ALL access to the system. they couldve at least sent some kind of warning email explaining exactly what would happen!!

0 coins

Yep, typical government communication - nonexistent. I found out from a random Facebook post, not from NY unemployment directly. Great system we've got here 🙄

Anyone know if we're getting any kind of tax documents for 2021 or how to access those since we're locked out of the system now?

0 coins

They'll mail 1099-Gs in January most likely. You should still be able to access your main account for documents, just not the weekly certification part.

I tried calling the appeals department instead of the regular unemployment line and actually got through! They explained that the remaining balances on federal programs are gone, but they at least answered my questions. Try 1-800-833-3000 instead of the regular number.

0 coins

Just tried this number and it's just as useless. Was on hold for 45 minutes then got disconnected 😡

0 coins

I tried the appeals line too. The lady I spoke with was nice but said there's nothing they can do about the federal programs ending - it's out of their hands.

0 coins

I'm in the same situation. Had around $2,100 left that just vanished. When I finally got through to someone using claimyr.com, they explained that the end date was set by Congress and DOL has no authority to extend or pay out remaining balances. Sucks but at least I stopped wasting time trying to certify for money I'll never see.

0 coins

How much did you pay for that service? Worth it?

0 coins

Can't discuss exact amounts here but I'll just say it was worth it to finally get an answer instead of spending hours on hold just to get disconnected. The peace of mind alone was worth it.

0 coins

Here's a crazy idea: what if we organized and all showed up at the DOL office in person? They can ignore our calls but hard to ignore a crowd of people demanding answers about why they suddenly lost access with no warning.

0 coins

Most of their offices are still closed to the public bc of COVID. Tried that route already 😒

0 coins

everyone who had leftover balances should file a class action lawsuit. this is basically theft - they promised a certain amount then took it away after we already qualified for it.

0 coins

Unfortunately the law that created these programs specifically included the September 5 end date. The remaining balance was always contingent on the program continuing. Not really grounds for a lawsuit.

0 coins

they still coulda given better warning that we'd be completely locked out tho. that part feels illegal to me
