NY unemployment suddenly cut off everything- not just the extra $360
I just can't believe what happened. Last Tuesday I was expecting to certify as usual, and when I logged in it said my benefits were exhausted?? I know the federal supplement of $360 was ending, but I thought we'd still get our base benefits. Now when I log in, the system says I need to file a new claim, but I haven't worked since February 2022 (so about 19 months). There's no way I qualify for a new claim. Called the hotline and it's just automated messages saying the same thing - file a new claim. How can they just cut everything off without warning? Seems like thousands of us are in the same boat... no emails, no letters, nothing explaining what happened. Anybody know what's going on or what we're supposed to do now?

same thing happened to me, but my benefits got cut off a week earlier. i think they have reeeeeally messed up their calculations on this one. i talked to a neighbor and they have the same issue. seems like the system is glitching big time and causing a mass cutoff without any warning whatsoever

After trying to call for days with no luck, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a live agent within an hour. Best decision I made - the agent explained that there was a system-wide error affecting claims that started during certain months. Talking to an agent got my benefits reinstated within 3 days. Seriously, it was the only way I could actually talk to someone who could help. They even have a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•100% worked for me. I was skeptical too but after 3 weeks of trying to call myself I was desperate. They called and waited on hold, then connected me once a real person answered.

I think what happened is that ny unemployment system did some kind of "audit" and just terminated a bunch of claims automatically. They didn't even send notifications... Just expecting everyone to figure it out themselves. Absolute disaster of a system, and of course it happens when people need help the most.

Look this is probably related to the big ID verification thing they announced a few months back. They're kicking everyone off and making them verify their identities again because of all the fraud they found in the system. Check your email spam folder - there might be something in there about ID.me verification that you missed.

•just went through every folder in my email and there's absolutely nothing from them. no warning at all.

•Hmm that's weird. When I got cut off in July, I eventually found an email from them buried in promotions folder. But maybe they're not even sending notices now 🤷♂️

They're doing this on purpose to get people off the system. The state doesn't want to pay out benefits anymore so they're making it impossible to stay on or resolve issues. It's disgusting but that's how these systems work - make it so frustrating that people give up.

•💯 exactly this. classic govt strategy - break the system and then blame the users for not being able to navigate it

•yep making the process as painful as possible is literally part of their strategy.

OK so I actually managed to get through to someone yesterday after calling repeatedly for two weeks. Here's what I found out: Apparently there was a system update that erroneously terminated thousands of active claims. The rep told me they are aware of the issue and working on a fix, but in the meantime everyone affected needs to call in to have their claim manually reinstated. They won't fix it automatically. The best way to get through is early morning (right when they open) or try using claimyr.com - that's how I finally got through after two weeks of trying. The agent I spoke with was able to see exactly what happened with my claim and fixed it on the spot. My portal now shows active again and I can certify next week. Don't file a new claim if you haven't worked! That will just complicate things further. Keep calling until you get a human who can help reinstate your existing claim. This is affecting thousands of people across NY and they're completely overwhelmed with calls, but persistence pays off. Good luck everyone!

•wait so its a system glitch?? why aren't they announcing this publicly? so frustrating

•They don't want to announce it because then EVERYONE would be calling. They're hoping people will just give up, honestly.

if u have a friend who works somewere maybe they can claim you worked for them? just an idea... the system is rigged against us anyway so 🤷♀️

•DO NOT DO THIS!!! This is fraud and they will catch you. My cousin tried something similar and now has to pay back $12k + penalties.

omg the exact same thing just happened to me!!! I was on hold with ny unemployment for THREE HOURS yesterday only to have them hang up on me when I finally got through. I've been on unemployment since april 2022 (got laid off in a company downsizing) and suddenly everything is just...gone? with zero explanation??

Just got off the phone with them (waited 2.5 hrs). The rep told me it's because my benefit year ended. Even though I still had weeks remaining on my claim, once you hit the 1-year mark from your initial filing date, the system automatically requires you to file a new claim. The problem is they normally send out notices about this in advance but there was some technical problem with the notification system. If you haven't worked in the last 18 months you probably won't qualify for a new claim. The rep suggested looking into emergency assistance through HRA instead. This whole situation sucks.

•But what about all the extended benefits they were offering? I thought those were supposed to continue even after the standard benefit year?

•That ended already. The extended benefits programs all expired. We're back to standard UI rules now which means new claims require new work history.

Y'all I literally just finished dealing with this EXACT issue. Had to call about 50 times but finally got through. The issue is they did a system update that messed up a ton of claims. If your benefit year ended AND you had certain types of extensions, the system incorrectly terminated everything instead of just recalculating. The good news is they CAN fix it, but you HAVE to talk to someone. I recommend using Claimyr.com - that's how I finally got through after days of failed attempts. Worth every penny because the agent was able to reactivate my claim immediately. Don't give up on this - it's their error and they have to fix it for you!

•The fix was immediate once I actually spoke to someone. My portal updated while I was still on the phone with them. The hard part was just getting through!

anyone else notice the news isn't covering this AT ALL? like thousands of people suddenly lose benefits with no warning and crickets from the media. guess we don't matter anymore now that the pandemic is "over" 🙄

This might sound weird but try checking your mail? My online account said the same thing but then I got a letter in the mail 3 days later explaining that I needed to verify something about my claim. The online system doesn't always show the full story. Check your physical mailbox!

Just went through this last month. Here's my breakdown of what happened and what I did to fix it: 1) My benefits suddenly showed as exhausted even though I had remaining balance 2) Called for 3 days straight with no luck getting through 3) Found the Claimyr service online (claimyr.com) and used it to get a callback with an actual agent 4) The agent explained it was a known glitch in their system affecting thousands of NY unemployment claims 5) They had to manually reactivate my claim on their end 6) My benefits were restored within 48 hours 7) I was able to claim back payments for the weeks I missed The frustrating part is they're aware of this issue but aren't fixing it systematically - each person has to call in to get it resolved individually. The phone service at claimyr.com was honestly the only way I managed to talk to a human. Once I got through, the fix was actually pretty simple on their end. Don't file a new claim if you haven't worked - that will just create more problems. You need to speak to a rep who can reactivate your existing claim.

•It worked for me. They just call on your behalf and stay on hold, then connect you when a real person answers. Saved me hours of hold time.

I heard from someone who works at NYSDOL (friend of a friend) that their computer system had a major update that went wrong and affected about 20% of all active claims. They're working on a fix but it's taking forever because their tech is from like the 1980s 😩

Why is nobody talking about contacting our representatives about this?? Call your state assembly person and state senator! That's what I did and their office contacted unemployment on my behalf. Had my issue resolved within 48 hours. These offices deal with constituent services and can often get through to agencies when we can't.

•Just called the main office number and asked to speak with whoever handles constituent services for unemployment issues. They took all my info and followed up.
