NY unemployment just ran out after 26 weeks - what am I supposed to do now?
Just completed my weekly certification and got hit with a message saying my benefits are ending with this payment. I figured this was coming since I'm right around the 26 week mark. The thing is, there was zero information about what I'm supposed to do next. No instructions, no links, nothing. Since I haven't found new employment yet, I don't have anything to file a new claim with. Do I just stop logging in to the system now? Is there some extension I should be applying for? The website isn't helpful at all and I can't get anyone on the phone. Anyone else been through this recently? Not sure what the next steps are supposed to be.

You should be eligible for Extended Benefits if your state is still offering them. Log in to your account and look for a button that says something like "Apply for Extended Benefits" or "File a new claim." If you don't see anything like that, you'll probably need to call them to get it sorted out.

•Thanks for the info. I logged back in and looked everywhere, but don't see any option for extended benefits. Tried calling but it's impossible to get through to anyone 😫

•NY doesn't have extended benefits right now. That program ended a while back when unemployment rates dropped below the threshold.

•Oh dang, you're right. Sorry for the bad info. It's been a while since I was in the system.

I went through this exact same thing two months ago. I was pulling my hair out trying to get answers. After days of failed calling attempts, I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback with an actual agent on the line. Best money I've spent in a while since talking to the agent got my situation figured out in minutes. They also have this helpful video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this some kind of scam? Why would I pay for something the government should provide for free? 🤔

•Not a scam at all. It's just a service that calls and waits on hold for you, then connects you when there's a real person. I was skeptical too but after spending like 8 hours trying to get through myself, it was worth it to finally talk to someone.

•wait so what did they tell you when you finally got through? was there actually anything you could do after benefits ran out?

•Yeah, they explained that I needed to file for a whole new benefit year even though I didn't have new work. There's a specific process for it that isn't explained anywhere on the site. The agent walked me through it.

•hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? Did they need access to your unemployment account or anything?

•No, they just call the NYSDOL number and wait on hold for you. When an agent picks up, they connect the call to your phone. You talk directly to unemployment yourself, Claimyr just handles the hold time.

Unfortunately, once your regular UI benefits are exhausted, that's pretty much it right now in New York. There aren't any federal extensions currently available like there were during COVID. Your best bet is to apply for SNAP benefits and other assistance programs while you continue job hunting. You can also check with your county's Department of Social Services for other resources.

I'm going thru the EXACT same thing right now! So frustrating that they don't have any info about what to do next. Like do they expect us to just be magically employed by week 27? The economy is still trash in my field.

•It's crazy right? They just cut you off with no guidance whatsoever. Have you found any resources or next steps?

•Not really. I've been calling for 3 days straight with no luck. Might try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned above if I get desperate enough. Will let you know if I find anything out!

Look for 599 training programs!!! This is a little-known option where you can get benefits while taking approved job training courses. Go to the NY DOL website and search for 599 program. You have to apply and get approved, but it can extend your benefits while you learn something new.

•THIS!!! The 599 program saved me when my benefits ran out. I'm taking IT courses now and still getting benefits. Not everyone qualifies but definitely worth checking out.

•Wow I had no idea this existed. Will definitely look into it, thank you!

So here's the deal with NY unemployment right now - it's insanely complicated but I'll try to break it down for you: When your regular UI benefits exhaust after 26 weeks, you have a few options: 1) If you had ANY work during your benefit year (even just a few weeks), you might be eligible to file a new claim. Log in and attempt to file a new claim to see if you qualify. 2) If you haven't worked at all, you'll need to wait until your benefit year ends (one year from when you first applied) before filing a new claim. 3) The 599 training program mentioned by others is legit - it allows benefits while in approved training programs. 4) Call and speak with an agent directly. The online system won't tell you everything you need to know. The website is garbage for complex situations. I recommend using claimyr.com to get through to someone quickly instead of spending days calling. An agent can review your specific situation and tell you exactly what options are available based on your claim history, which is way more helpful than general advice. Lastly, document EVERYTHING. Note who you spoke with, when, and what they told you. The system is broken and you might need this info later to fight for your benefits.

•Thank you for this detailed breakdown. It's more information than I've gotten from any official source. I'm going to try to speak with an agent directly.

your supposed to keep certifying. even with a $0 benefit, keep certifying every week. sometimes additional programs become available and they'll automatically enroll you if your still in the system. just my 2 cents.

This happened to me a few weeks ago. I called in (took forever to get through) and they told me I had to file a whole new claim because my benefit year was ending, even though I didn't have new employment. It's a weird technicality in the system.

•How long did it take you to get someone on the phone? I've been trying for days...

•Like 3 days of constant calling. I started using one of those auto-redial apps which helped a little bit, but it was still a nightmare. Eventually got through around 8:05am on a Tuesday.

the ny unemployment system is literally designed to be confusing so people give up 🤮 they WANT you to stop trying so they don't have to pay benefits. KEEP TRYING and don't let them win!

•Facts 💯 The whole system is rigged against workers.

•This isn't helpful at all. Do you have any actual advice or just conspiracy theories?

•It's not a conspiracy theory when there are literally studies showing states make UI systems deliberately difficult to navigate. And my advice IS to keep trying instead of giving up, which is exactly what the system wants you to do.

Apply for SNAP benefits ASAP if you haven't already. You'll probably qualify now that your unemployment is ending. Can help with groceries at least while you figure out the next step.
