Will my roommate get backpay from NY unemployment after approval letter?
My roommate got laid off from his warehouse job back in April and filed for ny unemployment on May 23rd. He's been certifying every week since then but hasn't received any money yet. Last week he finally got a letter saying his claim was approved and payments would be starting. But the letter doesn't say anything about the 7 weeks he already certified for. Will he automatically get paid for all those weeks he's been waiting? He's really struggling with rent and bills right now. Has anyone else had to wait this long and then gotten all their backpay at once? The approval letter is kinda vague about what happens next.

Identity theft messing up my NY unemployment claim - random deposits showing up
Someone has been using my identity to claim unemployment benefits without my knowledge! I first noticed something weird was happening when I got an unexpected deposit of $412 in my checking account last month. I thought maybe it was a tax refund error or something. A week later, another $412 showed up. I called my bank and they told me these were coming from the NY Department of Labor. The problem is - I never filed for unemployment! I've been working full-time at the same company for over three years. I tried calling the unemployment office dozens of times but couldn't get through. Finally sent them a secure message through their website about the fraud, but they haven't responded for almost three weeks now. This morning I received a letter saying I need to certify my benefits or they'll be stopped. CHECK YOUR MAIL CAREFULLY! When someone stole my identity for unemployment, I almost threw away a letter that looked like junk mail but was actually a tax form for benefits I never received. Also be prepared for this to potentially affect your taxes - you might get a 1099-G form for unemployment income that isn't yours. You'll need to contact NYS tax department to get that corrected too.

Just discovered someone's been claiming ny unemployment benefits under my name since October! I never even filed a claim! if your employer doesnt verify that you werent actually laid off, you might be dealing with this for awhile. make sure you contact ur current/former employer to have them confirm with unemployment that you never lost your job.

Most people don't actually need a lawyer for this. Save your money and follow the steps people mentioned above. The systems are in place to handle it, they're just slow af.

Got rejection letter but NY unemployment still asking me to verify IDme?
Super confused right now. I applied for unemployment in August after getting let go from my retail position. Last week I received what looks like a rejection letter saying I don't qualify based on my previous earnings (they calculated about $5,600 when apparently you need like $7,200 or something). I was disappointed but ready to move on and find another job. Then today I check my mail and there's TWO separate letters from NY unemployment both telling me I need to verify my identity through IDme before my claim can be processed. One letter is dated Sept 17 and the other Sept 19. Why would they ask me to verify my identity if they already rejected my claim? Is this just their system being slow and the letters crossed in the mail? Or should I still do the IDme thing because maybe they're reconsidering my claim? I've tried calling their number but the wait times are insane. Has anyone else experienced this weird situation?

The NY unemployment system is still broken AF from the pandemic overload. Never seen such a mess. I got 5 different contradicting letters in a 2 week period last time I applied.
just had almost this exact situation. do the idme verification and then CALL THEM. you probly need to talk to a tier 2 specialist. the idme is required regardless of approval status

Filed for ny unemployment in October but haven't received a single payment yet
I started filing for unemployment back in October after getting laid off. It's now February and I haven't received a single payment. I check my account every week and it shows my claims as "pending" with no explanation. I've tried calling the unemployment office literally every single day - sometimes 5-6 times a day - but can never get through to an actual human. Either it's busy signals or I get stuck in the automated system that eventually hangs up on me. The website is completely useless for finding out what's going on with my claim. I've sent messages through their online portal but never get responses. I'm completely out of savings at this point and about to miss another rent payment. Does anyone know how to actually get someone on the phone or find out why my payments are stuck?

u should look into if ur identity might have been stolen. theres been a huge spike in unemployment fraud since covid and sometimes they freeze legit claims when they suspect fraud. happened to me.

Check your credit report for any weird activity. But really you need to talk to someone at NYSDOL to confirm if that's the issue.

I used it last month when I was in OPs situation. It works exactly as advertised - they call and wait on hold, then call you when they reach a person. Got my claim fixed that day after weeks of trying myself.

YOUR ROOMATE NEEDS TO CALL THEM!!!!! i went thru same thing, my claim was 'approved' but no backpay came, turns out there was a flag on my account that needed manual override. system is a JOKE. don't just wait!!

The only way I finally got my backpay was through my state representative's office. Call your local assembly member - they have special contacts at unemployment and can expedite claims. Worked for me after 3 months of getting nowhere.
