Confused why NY unemployment benefits exhausted before Sep 5 end date
I've gone back to work recently and I know I'm working more than 4 days a week so I shouldn't get any benefits. But I was expecting my claim to be active until early September. When I called the certification line yesterday, the automated system told me my unemployment insurance benefits are exhausted. I thought benefits were supposed to end on September 5th? I did certify for the last two weeks (even though I knew I wouldn't get paid due to working full time). Did claiming those weeks somehow use up my remaining balance? I'm worried because what if my hours get cut again and I need to use the remaining weeks I thought I had until September? Anyone understand why my benefits show as exhausted now?

Same thing happened to me! I started working part time in June, but kept certifying (reporting all my hours honestly). Then in July the system told me benefits exhausted even tho I thought I had until September. Turns out its based on your TOTAL benefit amount, not just the calendar date. Once you've received all the money in your 'account' it's done, regardless of the date.

Oh that makes sense. So I must have used up my full benefit amount without realizing it. Thanks for explaining!

Yeah thats how it works, its not like everyone gets until sep 5 guaranteed. Its either until that date OR until ur benefit $$$ runs out - whichever comes first

After struggling with this EXACT problem, I finally got through to a rep using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they got me a callback with a live agent to my phone without having to wait on hold for hours. Talking to the agent got my situation sorted in minutes! Best investment I made to get my benefits question answered. Check out this video too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Does this actually work? I've been trying to call ny unemployment for 3 weeks with no luck 🤔

100% worked for me! I was super skeptical at first but was desperate after trying to call for days. Got a callback within 3 hours and the agent fixed everything.

sounds like spam to me... another 'miracle solution' that probably does nothing 🙄

Not spam at all! I was at my wits end trying to get through on my own. The service just keeps dialing and stays on hold for you, then calls you when a person picks up. Way better than listening to that awful hold music for hours.

I tried this last week when my account got locked. Can confirm it works - agent told me exactly why my benefits were exhausted early (I hit my maximum benefit amount).

Its based on your maximum benefit amount (MBA). Every time u certify for a week, it deducts from ur total MBA. When that hits $0, ur done even if its before Sep 5. Ur MBA should be listed somewhere in ur online account or on ur monetary determination letter.

This system is so freaking confusing 😩 I had a similar issue where I thought I had benefits until September but they cut me off in July. Called NY unemployment and waited 3 HOURS only to be told I'd used all my money. Why can't they just make this stuff clear upfront??!!

Right?! Its like they purposely make it confusing so people give up. Classic government BS.

Ive been saying this for years. the unemployment system is designed to be frustrating! they want you to give up so they save money

Update: I FINALLY got through to a rep who explained that my benefit year actually ENDED, not just exhausted. Whole different problem. Check your benefit year end date too!

Here's what's happening with your NY unemployment claim: There are TWO factors that determine how long you can collect benefits: 1) Your Maximum Benefit Amount (MBA) - this is the total dollar amount you're eligible to receive 2) The program end date - which was indeed September 5th for many pandemic-related programs Whichever comes FIRST will end your benefits. Sounds like you depleted your MBA by certifying during those weeks. Even though you reported working and didn't receive payment for those specific weeks, the system still processes those certifications against your claim. DON'T PANIC though! If your hours get reduced again, you may be eligible to reopen a claim depending on your situation. If you need clarification on your specific case, I HIGHLY recommend using claimyr.com - it's the only reliable way I've found to actually speak with a NY unemployment representative without spending days trying. They'll dial for you and connect you with a live agent who can explain exactly what happened with your specific claim. Hope this helps clear things up!

This is incredibly helpful, thank you for breaking it down so clearly! I'll definitely look into reopening options if my situation changes.

I wish I'd known this months ago... would have saved me so much stress. The unemployment website explains NONE of this clearly.

Quick question - did you get a letter or email saying your benefits were exhausted? Or just the phone system told you? Sometimes the automated system gives wrong info.

It was just the phone system. I haven't checked my online account yet or received any letters. Good point about automated systems being wrong sometimes.

Yeah def check ur online account. The phone system told me I was exhausted once but my online portal showed I still had $2,400 left. Worth double-checking before you panic!

September 5 was just the FINAL date for federal programs. Your claim can end earlier if u used all ur money. Each person gets different total amount based on their earnings during their base period. Check ur payment history in ur account - add up all the payments and compare to ur initial maximum benefit amount.

i had this problem to. turns out certifying for weeks even when you dont get paid still countz against your claim duration. super dumb policy but thats ny unemployment for ya 🤦♂️

wait srsly?? so even if you report working full time and get $0 for that week, it still counts as using a week of benefits? that's insane!

yep! found out the hard way. its cause they count it as 'claiming a week' even if u get nothing. some bs about 'administrative processing' or whatever

I don't think that's right. When you certify but report working full time, it shouldn't count against your maximum benefit amount. It might count against your total weeks though. The system is confusing.

@profile19 trust me bro, i talked to 3 diff reps about this. if u certify for a week it counts as 'processed' even if u get $0. its stupid but thats how they do it

Call them!!! The only way to know for sure is to talk to someone. I spent 2 weeks trying to get through before I found claimyr.com - got a callback in 2 hours and they explained everything about my exhausted benefits. Turns out I was eligible for an extension I didn't even know about!

Is this claimyr thing for real? Seems too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach ny unemployment

It's legit! I was desperate after trying for days and my friend recommended it. You pay them to do the calling/waiting, then they connect you when they get a human. Best money I spent all year considering I got my benefits sorted immediately after talking to a rep.

NYSDOL has the WORST communication of any govt agency I've ever dealt with. Nobody ever explains how any of this works. I'm in the exact same boat - worked a few weeks part time, reported it honestly, and suddenly my claim says exhausted with no explanation. The whole system is designed to confuse people I swear.

There's actually a calculation you can do: Take your Weekly Benefit Amount (WBA) and divide your Maximum Benefit Amount (MBA) by it. That tells you how many weeks you get, no matter what. So if your WBA was $400 and your MBA was $10,000, you'd get 25 weeks MAX. September date doesn't matter if you hit that max first.

Unless you were on one of the extension programs, then it gets MORE complicated. Each program had different rules and end dates 🤯

Sidenote: Is anyone else noticing how much HARDER it is to get through to NY unemployment now that people are going back to work? It's like they reduced staff right when we need answers about our claims ending. Typical.

OMG YES! Called 32 times yesterday, couldn't get through once. It's even worse than during the height of the pandemic somehow???

They definitely cut staff. My cousin works at DOL and said they let go of all the temp workers they hired for the pandemic rush.

Because my new job is somewhat unstable and I'm worried about hours getting cut. I was hoping to have unemployment as a backup through September if needed.

Check your payment history. Each payment deducts from ur total benefit amount. When I added mine up + the administrative fees they take out, it matched exactly when my claim exhausted. It's just basic math but NY unemployment never explains it clearly to anyone 🙄
