NY unemployment claim pending since July - told someone would call back in 48 hours - anyone else?
So I've been waiting for my NY unemployment to come through since JULY (it's now March!). Today I finally got smart and called the governor's office first which somehow got me through to an actual person at unemployment. The woman took my social and put me on hold for about 10 minutes while she 'looked into my claim'. When she came back, all she said was that someone would call me back within 24 to 48 hours. Has anyone else been told this? Did they actually call you back? I'm so tired of waiting and getting nowhere with this system.

Yes, I've been through this! Called in January about my claim that was pending since November, and they told me the same 24-48 hour callback thing. They actually did call me back - but it took 4 business days, not 2. The person who called had authority to approve my claim on the spot, which was a huge relief. My payments started processing the next day. So hang in there! The callback system is real, but their timeframe estimate is (surprise) not accurate.

That gives me some hope at least! Did you do anything special when they called back? Should I have certain documents ready? I'm paranoid they'll call when I'm driving or something and I'll miss my one chance.

I was told the SAME EXACT THING back in October!!! And guess what?? NOBODY EVER CALLED ME BACK!!!! Had to start the whole process over again in November. The system is completely broken and they just tell you whatever to get you off the phone. I wouldn't count on that callback if I were you.

Oh great, that's what I was afraid of. Did you try calling the governor's office again? That's the only reason I got through today at all.

The callback system is legitimate, but it's overwhelmed right now. Here's what you should do to maximize your chances:\n\n1. Make sure your voicemail is set up and not full\n2. Answer ALL calls from unknown or blocked numbers for the next few days\n3. If you miss their call, they'll try once more but not a third time\n4. Have your claim ID, last employer info, and ID documents ready when they call\n5. If no callback after 3 business days, call again but request a \

Thank you! This is really helpful. I'll make sure my voicemail is cleared out. Do you know if there's any way to check my claim status online while I'm waiting?

Yes, you can check your claim status online, but the system isn't always accurate for backdated or complex claims. Log into your NY.gov ID account, go to My Online Services, then Unemployment Services, and select

I checked and it still just says pending since July. So frustrating!

I had a similar experience but my claim was only delayed for 3 months. I got the callback promise too and after waiting 4 days with no call I was at my wits end. My neighbor told me about this service called Claimyr that got him through to an unemployment agent in 20 minutes. I was skeptical but desperate so I tried it. Worked perfectly - got through to an agent who fixed my claim that same day. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE if you want to see how it works. The site is claimyr.com. Honestly saved me weeks of stress.

I'll definitely check this out if they don't call me back by Friday. At this point I'd try almost anything. July to March is ridiculous to wait for benefits I'm entitled to.

Has anyone else used this Claimyr thing? Sounds too good to be true honestly. The NY unemployment phone system is impossible to get through.

Just a quick data point - I was told I'd get a callback within 48 hours back in January, and they actually called me back in about 36 hours. So it does happen! My situation got resolved pretty quickly after that. I think it really depends on what's going on with your specific claim and which department needs to handle it.

That's a good tip, thanks! I normally ignore unknown numbers but I'll answer everything for the next week.

I've been on unemployment twice in the past few years, and both times they told me about the 24-48 hour callback. The first time they called back in 3 days, the second time it took about a week. But they did eventually call. The key thing is that when they DO call, they usually have the authority to fix whatever the issue is with your claim right then and there. So it's worth the wait rather than starting over with someone who can't actually help.\n\nSince you've been waiting since JULY though (wow!), I'd give them the 48 hours and then try again. That's an extremely long backdate they need to process.

A week is better than never I guess. And yeah, July to March is crazy. I've been surviving on credit cards and help from family, but it's not sustainable. I really need this backpay to come through.

UPDATE for anyone who finds this thread later: I FINALLY got through again by calling at exactly 8:00am when they open. Told them nobody called me back after my first attempt. The second agent apologized and processed my claim right away. Got payment for ALL back weeks within 3 days. So if they don't call you back, KEEP TRYING!!

Thank you for the update! I'll definitely try the 8am trick if I don't hear back. Glad you finally got your payments!

That's fantastic news! So glad it worked out for you. When you get that backpay, make sure you set aside some for taxes - they don't always withhold the correct amount on backdated claims!

Great news! This is exactly how the system is supposed to work. The callback specialists have much more authority to resolve complex claims compared to the frontline phone agents. Congratulations!
