Called NY State Senate office about stuck unemployment claim - what happens next?

I've been stuck in pending status with my NY unemployment claim for over 3 weeks and couldn't get through to ANYONE at the DOL. After trying the phone system 20+ times, I took the suggestion from some people here and called my state Senate office today. The woman who answered took all my information (claim ID, contact info, issue details) and said they would 'put in a ticket on my behalf' and that I should 'wait for them to call soon.' Has anyone gone this route before? How long did it take for them to actually call you back? And more importantly, did it actually WORK to get your claim unstuck? I'm getting really desperate as rent is due next week and my savings are basically gone.

i did this back in January. took about 4-5 days to get a call from DOL after the senate office put in the ticket. they fixed my issue right on the spot! def better than waiting on hold for 3 hrs just to get hung up on lol

That's good to hear! Did they call from a recognizable number? I'm worried I might miss their call if it comes from some random number I don't recognize.

The State Senate office route is actually one of the most effective ways to get through the NY unemployment bureaucracy when you're stuck. I've seen it work multiple times for people in similar situations. They have dedicated liaisons at NYSDOL who handle these legislative referrals with higher priority than regular claims. Typically you should expect a call within 3-7 business days, and make sure to answer ALL calls, even from unknown numbers, as DOL agents often call from blocked or varying numbers.\n\nWhen they do call, have all your documentation ready - claim confirmation numbers, dates of certification, any screenshots of errors, etc. This will help them resolve your issue much faster.

Thank you! This is really helpful. I'll make sure I keep my phone close and answer every call. I've got screenshots of the pending status and all my claim info ready to go.

DONT get too excited. I did this SAME EXACT THING in February and they NEVER called me back!!! had to try ANOTHER senators office before anyone bothered to help me. the whole system is a JOKE

Oh no, that's what I'm afraid of! Did you follow up with the first office when they didn't call? I'm wondering if I should call them again after a few days if I don't hear anything.

Yeah I called them after a week and they said 'oh we put in the request, just be patient' but NOTHING happened. waste of time!! the second office I tried was actually better, got a call in 2 days

I've helped several people navigate this exact situation. The Senate office approach usually works, but there are a few things you should know:\n\n1. Their \

This is all accurate advice. I'd also add that while waiting for the Senate office route to work, you might want to try reaching NYSDOL directly through Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that helps you bypass the phone queue and usually gets you through to an agent within 30-45 minutes. I was skeptical but it worked for me when I was in a similar situation. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

I hadn't heard of this service before - I'll check it out if I don't hear back from the Senate office route in a few days. Has anyone else tried this Claimyr thing? Is it legitimate?

Ya I tried it when my claim got stuck in February, got thru to someone at DOL in like 45 mins instead of dealing with busy signals all day. cost a few bucks but was worth it for me since I was missing payments for weeks

The same thing happened to me! I'm still waiting and its been 9 days since I called my Assemblyman's office (not Senate, but same idea). The lady was super nice but no call from DOL yet. I'm getting so stressed because my account is still showing the dreaded \

Unfortunately, there's no public-facing system to check the status of legislative referrals. Your best option is to follow up with the Assemblymember's office directly after 7-10 business days. Ask them to check on the status of your referral and request that they escalate it if possible. Sometimes a gentle reminder from their office can move things along.

Thanks, I'll call them tomorrow! This whole process is making my anxiety so much worse. I just need my benefits!!!

One more thing to keep in mind - make sure whoever calls you from the DOL provides a direct number or extension before ending the call. Sometimes they resolve the immediate issue but then you might have follow-up questions a day or two later. Having that direct contact makes a huge difference rather than starting the whole process over again.

That's a great tip - I would have never thought to ask for that. I'll definitely request their direct number if/when they call.

Thanks for the heads up - I usually ignore unknown calls because of all the spam, but I'll answer everything until this gets resolved!

My sister had an issue with her NY unemployment back in January and she actually found that emailing her state assembly person worked even faster than calling the senate office. She got a response within 24 hours and her claim was fixed within 3 days. Might be worth trying both approaches simultaneously if you're in a hurry for rent.

That's a good idea - I hadn't thought of trying my Assembly person too. I might do that tomorrow if I don't hear anything by then. Did your sister just email through the contact form on their website?

Yeah she just used the contact form on the website! She made sure to include her claim ID # and a brief explanation about how long she'd been waiting + that she had tried calling multiple times. The subject line was something like

Just to set realistic expectations - while the Senate/Assembly route is effective, keep in mind that if there's a complex issue with your claim, even the legislative offices can't always get it resolved immediately. Common issues like ID verification, employer disputes, or out-of-state wage investigations might still take additional time even after the initial contact. \n\nThat said, the benefit of going through your representatives is that you'll actually get a human being who can explain what's happening and give you a realistic timeframe, which is far better than endless pending status with no explanation.

That makes sense. I just need someone to tell me what's going on! My claim is pretty straightforward - I was laid off after 3 years at the same company, and they've confirmed they don't dispute my claim. So hopefully once I get through to someone they can resolve it quickly.
