How long does NY unemployment interview callback take after claim shows pending?

I just called to check on my NY unemployment claim status and they told me it's still pending. The rep said someone will be calling me for an interview, but didn't give me any timeframe. Has anyone gone through this interview process recently? How long did you have to wait for them to call you back? I'm getting really anxious because my savings are running low and I need to know if I should be looking for other options while I wait. Any info would help!!!

They told me the same thing back in February. I ended up waiting almost 3 weeks for the callback interview. The agent explained they were backed up with claims. When they finally called, the interview only took about 15 minutes - just verifying employment history and reason for separation. Make sure your phone is charged and you answer even unknown numbers during business hours!

3 WEEKS?? Omg I can't wait that long. Did they backpay you from when you first filed at least?

wait times depend on how complicated ur case is. mine took 10 days but my friend waited over a month. just make sure u pick up when they call cuz they might not call back right away if u miss it

Do they leave a voicemail if you miss the call? I'm worried I'll miss it when I'm in the bathroom or something!

The interview scheduling depends on several factors: 1. Current claim volume (early 2025 has been very high) 2. The complexity of your separation from employment 3. Whether employer verification is needed Typical wait times range from 7-21 business days, but some cases take longer. If your claim is straightforward (laid off due to lack of work with clear documentation), it might be faster. If there are questions about your eligibility or your employer contests it, expect the longer timeframe. During this waiting period, continue to certify weekly as if you've been approved. If approved, you'll receive all back payments from your eligibility date.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I was laid off, but my employer was going through a restructuring so maybe that's complicating things. I'll keep certifying weekly.

I waited 6 weeks for my interview!! The system is COMPLETELY BROKEN. I called every day and got different answers each time. One rep said 1-2 weeks, another said 2-3 weeks, and I ended up waiting SIX. By the time they called me, I had already borrowed money from family just to pay rent. The DOL doesn't care at all about people actually struggling!!!

Six weeks is insane! I hope that doesn't happen to me. Did you do anything that finally got them to call you?

NOTHING worked. I called constantly, emailed, even tried contacting my state rep. When they finally called, the lady acted like it was totally normal timing! The whole system is designed to make people give up. Good luck.

After struggling to get through to the unemployment office for my interview scheduling (was in pending for 4 weeks), I finally found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an agent quickly. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent I spoke with was able to look at my file and see that I had been flagged for an interview due to my job separation reason. After explaining my situation, the agent actually completed the interview right then instead of scheduling one for later. My claim was processed the next day. Sometimes speaking with the right person makes all the difference.

This sounds really helpful! I've been trying to get through for days. Did they actually fix your issue or just set up the interview?

In my case they resolved it right away, but it depends on your specific situation. The key was getting to talk with an actual claims specialist instead of just the frontline reps who can't really do anything. Definitely worth trying if you're getting desperate.

I'm also waiting for an interview callback! Been pending for 2 weeks now. So frustrating that they don't give us any specific timeframe. Has anyone had success with calling back and asking for the interview to be expedited?

I tried asking for expedited processing and the rep told me everyone's claim is being processed in the order received. Basically a nice way of saying no. The only thing that worked was repeatedly calling until I got a more experienced agent who could actually help.

Just to clarify something important: make sure you continue to certify for benefits EVERY WEEK while waiting for your interview. If your claim is eventually approved, you'll only receive back payments for weeks you properly certified. Missing certifications means missing payments, even if you were eligible during that time.

Thanks for the reminder! I've been certifying every Sunday. So if I get approved, they'll pay me for all these weeks I've been certifying while in pending status?

Yes, exactly. As long as you continue certifying each week, you'll receive all eligible back payments once your claim is approved. Just keep documenting your work search activities too, as they may ask about those during your interview.

UPDATE: I finally got my interview call today!!! It's been exactly 17 days since they told me someone would call. The interview was super quick - just asked about my last employer, why I was let go, and verified my personal info. The interviewer said my payments should start processing in 24-48 hours. Fingers crossed!!!

That's great news! Glad they finally called you. This is pretty typical - the interview itself is usually quick and straightforward. Hope your payments start coming through soon.

Thank you so much for updating! That gives me hope. Did they call from a blocked number? I'm answering everything now just in case.

Mine showed up as "NY LABOR DEPT" but I've heard sometimes it just shows as unknown or blocked. Definitely answer everything during business hours!
