How long after NY unemployment phone interview until decision is made?
I finally got my phone interview with NY unemployment yesterday after waiting almost 3 weeks. The interviewer asked about my separation from my last job and took down all my information. She didn't tell me anything about when I'd hear back though. Has anyone gone through this recently? How long did it take for them to make a decision after your phone interview? I've been without income for over a month now and really need to know when I might start receiving benefits. Getting super anxious checking my account every morning.

In my experience, NY unemployment usually makes a determination within 2-5 business days after the phone interview. However, it can sometimes take up to 10 business days if they need to contact your employer for additional information or if there's a high volume of claims. Make sure you continue to certify for benefits each week while you're waiting for the decision - this is really important! You'll get paid retroactively for all eligible weeks once they approve your claim.

•Thanks for the info! I'll definitely keep certifying every week. Do you think I should call them if I don't hear anything by next Wednesday (that would be 7 business days)?

•3 weeks?? Ugh, I really hope it doesn't take that long. Did your friend do anything to speed up the process?

Just went through this last month. Got my determination letter exactly 4 business days after my interview. Then payments started 2 days after that. Don't stress too much, the interviewer told me most cases are pretty straightforward once they get to the interview stage!

•That's reassuring! Was there anything you had to do after getting the determination letter, or did the payments just start automatically?

The DOL is currently processing a high volume of claims, so timelines vary considerably depending on the complexity of your case, whether they need additional verification from employers, and current staffing levels. Typically, you should receive a determination within 5-7 business days. This will come as an official determination letter in your online account message center and possibly by mail. If your case requires additional investigation or if there are discrepancies between your information and your employer's, it could take 2-3 weeks. If you don't receive a determination within 10 business days, I'd recommend contacting them. Continue certifying weekly without fail during this waiting period.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! I quit my job because they changed my position completely without notice - do you think that makes my case more complicated?

HAHAHA 2-5 business days??? That's HILARIOUS! I waited SEVEN WEEKS after my interview before they made a decision. The whole system is a JOKE. They lost my paperwork TWICE and I had to redo the entire interview. Don't count on anything happening quickly with these people. They seriously don't care at all about how desperate we are for our money!!

•While I understand your frustration, I want to clarify that seven weeks is extremely unusual. Most claims are processed within 1-2 weeks after the interview. There might have been specific complications with your case that aren't typical for most claimants. The system isn't perfect, but it generally works much faster than your experience suggests.

After my interview in January, I waited 8 days with no update. I tried calling the regular unemployment number but kept getting disconnected after being on hold forever. I was desperate since my rent was due, so I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. The agent told me my claim needed one more verification that got overlooked, and they fixed it right there. Got my determination letter the next day! They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - definitely worth it when you're stuck waiting.

•I've never heard of that before! If I don't hear anything by next week I might try it. Was it hard to use?

•Super easy - you just enter your number and they call you when they've secured a spot in the call queue. Saved me hours of frustration and probably weeks of waiting.

it really depends on ur situation. my interview went smooth cuz i got laid off w/ no issues. decision came 3 days later. my roommate quit his job and had to wait like 2 weeks after interview for decision. they denied him first then he appealed and finally got approved after another month. if u quit or got fired its usually longer wait time just fyi

•That's good to know. I technically quit but only because they completely changed my job without warning. The interviewer seemed understanding when I explained that they moved me from office admin to warehouse loading with no notice or discussion.

I'm in the exact same boat right now! Had my interview on Tuesday and still nothing. Getting so anxious checking my account. Did you get your determination yet? How long did it end up taking?

•Got my determination yesterday! Took 6 business days total. They approved my claim, thank goodness. Payments should start next week they said. Hang in there!

Just to add a helpful tip: if your claim is approved, you'll typically see the payment status change to "pending" about 24-48 hours before the money actually arrives in your account. This is normal processing time for the payment system. If you see that status change, you can be confident that payment is on its way.

•That's really helpful to know, thank you! I'll keep an eye out for that status change.
