Missed NY unemployment Child Tax Credit payment - eligible after distribution date
I just found out I was determined eligible for NY unemployment benefits AFTER they already sent out all the child tax credit payments. My determination letter is dated April 3, 2025, but I know they distributed the CTC payments in March. Has anyone else been in this situation? Will I still get my child tax credit payment even though I was found eligible after they sent them all out? I really was counting on that money for my kids. Do I need to call someone or fill out a special form to request it?

same thing happened to me last year! I had to wait for the next batch of payments. I think they do them quarterly or something

Quarterly?? I can't wait 3 months! Did you have to do anything special to make sure you got included in the next batch?

The Child Tax Credit payments for NY unemployment claimants are actually distributed monthly, not quarterly. If your eligibility was determined after the March distribution, you should automatically receive your payment in the next monthly cycle (late April). You don't need to do anything extra if your eligibility letter already states you qualify for the CTC.

Thank you! That's such a relief to hear it'll come in April. The eligibility letter mentions the credit but doesn't say when I'll get it. Do they notify you before they send it or does it just show up?

I'm a benefits counselor, and I can confirm that NY unemployment now processes Child Tax Credit payments monthly. However, there's an important distinction: if your eligibility determination date (April 3) falls after the processing cutoff for April (typically the 15th of the previous month), you might actually be in the May payment cycle. I recommend logging into your NY.gov account and checking the "Payment History" section. There should be a "Scheduled Payments" tab that will show any pending CTC payments with their estimated deposit dates.

I just checked and don't see anything under Scheduled Payments yet. Does that mean I'm definitely in the May cycle? This is so frustrating!

The scheduled payments section doesnt always update right away. Mine took like a week after i got my eligibility letter to show up in that section. just keep checking

CALL THEM NOW!!! I was in the EXACT same situation in January and they "forgot" to add me to the next payment cycle! I had to call 57 TIMES before getting through to someone who could help!!! Don't wait for the system to "automatically" do anything because the NY unemployment system is BROKEN!

Oh no, that sounds like a nightmare! Did you eventually get your payment? I've been trying to call but can't get through to anyone.

After going through this exact situation myself, I found an actual solution that worked. I was approved for benefits after the March payment cycle and couldn't get through on the phone for days. I eventually used Claimyr.com to get connected to an agent in under 10 minutes. They have this system that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent I spoke with was able to manually add me to the next payment cycle and confirm exactly when I would receive it. Totally worth it rather than spending days trying to call.

Thank you! I'm going to try this right now. I've been calling for two days straight with no luck. Did they ask for any specific information when you called?

Just have your claim ID and the date of your eligibility determination ready. The agent will need to verify your identity with some basic questions, then they can look up your status in their system. Make sure to specifically ask them to confirm you're in the payment cycle.

im confused about somethin... do we automatically get the child tax credits with unemployment or do we have to apply for them separately? i got approved in february but havent gotten any ctc payment

You need to have indicated that you have eligible dependents on your original application. If you didn't do that, you need to complete form UIB-5C (Dependent Credit Claim Form) through your online account or by mail. The system doesn't automatically know about your children unless you tell it!

UPDATE: I used the Claimyr service someone recommended below and finally got through to an agent! They confirmed I was missed in the April cycle due to a processing backlog but have now manually added me to receive payment on April 29th. They said this happens sometimes with eligibility determinations that come through right after a payment cycle. SUCH a relief to have an actual date now!

Make sure you SAVE that agent's information and the confirmation number for the call!!! I've had them tell me things were fixed before and then nothing happened!

Good advice about saving the confirmation number. For everyone's reference, the current NY unemployment CTC payment schedule for 2025 is: - January 15th - February 19th (delayed due to President's Day) - March 18th - April 29th (delayed due to tax filing deadline) - May 20th - June 17th - July 15th If your eligibility is determined within 14 days before any of these dates, you might be rolled to the next cycle unless you specifically contact them to request inclusion in the current cycle.
