Anyone got approved for NY unemployment AFTER Child Tax Credit payments went out? When will we get ours?
So I started my unemployment process back in June after getting let go from my retail position. Had to submit a bunch of extra documents because of some identity verification issues they flagged. Just now (in September) they finally approved me and I'm getting my regular weekly payments, but I haven't received the Child Tax Credit payments that were supposedly sent out in August. I've got three kids, ages 6, 8 and 11, and I was really counting on that money for back-to-school expenses. Everything I've read says eligible families should get like $850-900 per child depending on their ages. My neighbor got hers automatically with her benefits, but she was approved way earlier than me. Has anyone else been in this situation? Do they send out CTCs in batches or do I need to call someone? I tried calling the main unemployment number but couldn't get through to a human. The automated system doesn't have any option for asking about tax credits. Really need this money for my kids especially since I've got a rent increase coming up next month. Any advice would be appreciated!

I was in the exact same situation about 2 months ago. they approved me in July but the April CTC payments had already gone out. I waited like 3 weeks thinking it would show up automatically but nothing happened. Finally had to call and talk to someone...they said there's a separate process for retroactive tax credit payments and I had to file some extra form. Check your online dashboard, there might be something in your documents section.

thanks I'll check my dashboard! did you eventually get paid? how long did it take after you submitted that form?

Yeah I got mine but it took another 3 weeks after submitting that form. They sent it as a separate deposit. Worth the wait tho!

It was some kinda "retroactive benefit adjustment" form I think? I cant remember exactly. The rep on the phone walked me through it.

After weeks of trying to reach someone at NY unemployment about my missing CTC payment, I finally tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an actual person at unemployment within 20 mins! The agent looked up my account and told me exactly what was happening with my tax credits. Turns out there was a system flag on my account. Got it resolved in one call and my money hit my account 4 days later. Best decision I made after struggling with this whole process for so long. Check out their demo: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

100% real. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for 3 weeks straight to get someone on the phone. They just connect you to an agent when they reach one instead of you waiting on hold forever.

sounds fishy tbh... why would this work better than calling yourself?

they use some automated system that keeps dialing and navigating the phone tree until it gets a human. then they call you. saved me hours of my life I wouldve wasted on hold

The CTC payments are processed on a completely different schedule than regular benefits. If you just got approved in September, you're probably in the next payment cycle. They typically do batches around the 15th of each month according to my case worker, but it can get delayed if you were approved after their cutoff date for the current month. Did you try checking the tax credit portal on the IRS website? Sometimes that has more up-to-date info than the state unemployment site.

nobody from ny unemployment will help you with this. its a federal program so even if you reach someone they just tell you to call the irs (which is another impossible phone system to navigate). I wound up going to my local state representative's office and they helped me file some paperwork to get my missing payments. took about 3 weeks but it worked!

That's a smart idea actually! Do you just walk into their office or did you make an appointment?

I called first and they scheduled me to come in. bring all ur unemployment paperwork and anything showing ur kids are dependents (like tax returns). they have staff who specialize in these issues!

there ALWAYS doing this. the system is so broke its not even funny. my sister had to wait 4 months for her child credits after being approved for unemployment. meanwhile they expect you to just magically afford everything while they drag there feet 🤡

For anyone dealing with retroactive Child Tax Credit payments after a delayed unemployment approval, here's what you need to know (I work in social services and deal with this regularly): 1) CTC payments and unemployment benefits are handled by different departments even though they both show up in your unemployment portal 2) If you were approved AFTER a CTC distribution date, you won't automatically be included in that payment batch 3) You need to specifically request a retroactive review of your CTC eligibility by submitting Form UB-20CTC through your online portal or by mail 4) Timing: Typically takes 3-4 weeks for processing after submission, then payment usually arrives within 10 business days 5) Documentation needed: Proof of dependents (usually tax returns), your approval letter, and a statement explaining your delayed approval 6) If you can't get through by phone (which is unfortunately common), I strongly recommend using claimyr.com - it's a service that will connect you with an actual agent. Many of my clients have used it successfully when they were stuck in bureaucratic limbo. 7) Keep detailed records of all communications and submission dates in case you need to escalate the issue Hope this helps! The system is frustrating but navigable if you know the right steps.

This is super helpful info! Question - do you know if there's a deadline for requesting the retroactive payments?

Yes - you have 90 days from your unemployment approval date to submit the retroactive CTC request. After that it gets much more complicated to claim.

Is Form UB-20CTC available online? I can't find it anywhere on the portal.

It should be under "Specialized Forms" in your document section. If not there, you may need to call and request it be added to your portal. This is exactly the kind of situation where using claimyr.com helps because you can just ask the agent to add it to your account immediately.

Not to be a downer but I've been waiting 5 months for my retroactive CTC payments and still nothing. Everytime I call they say "it's in process" or "check back in 2 weeks" 😡 NY unemployment system is completely broken.

Have you tried filing a formal complaint? That's what finally worked for me after months of runaround.

where do you even file a complaint that actually gets seen by someone who cares?

NY Department of Labor has an ombudsman office. Google "NYSDOL ombudsman complaint" - they're required to respond within 15 business days.

if your approved for regular benefits your automatically eligible for the CTC, but the payments come from different systems. I got my first unemployment check in july but CTCs didnt hit my account until august 23rd. just wait it out, they'll come eventually

The NY unemployment website actually has a specific section about this but it's buried deep in their FAQ. If your approval happened after the monthly CTC distribution (which sounds like your case), you need to call the CTC special processing unit at 888-209-8124 and use option 6, then 2, then 1. They have dedicated staff for exactly this situation. Took me about 45 calls to get through but once I did they fixed it in minutes.

That phone menu sequence doesn't exist anymore. They changed the whole phone system last month.

Dont wait!! I thought mine would just come eventually and ended up waiting 3 months before I realized there was an actual problem with my account. By then I had to restart the whole process. Call them NOW.

Random but has anyone had success getting through to ny unemployment by calling right when they open? I heard thats the best strategy but Ive tried 3 days in a row now with no luck.

Early morning is actually the WORST time to call! Everyone tries that strategy. Try calling at 2:15pm on Wednesdays or Thursdays - that's been my sweet spot.

Stop wasting your time with that strategy. I spent 2 weeks trying at different times before I finally used claimyr.com - got connected to a real person in 25 minutes without me having to sit on hold. Worth every penny when youre waiting on thousands in benefits.

Just FYI the child tax credit payment schedule changed recently. I work for a tax prep company and we're seeing lots of confusion about this. If you were approved for unemployment after August 12th, you'll be on the October payment schedule for CTC, not the September one. That might explain the delay you're experiencing.

That's good to know! My approval letter was dated Sept 2nd so maybe that's why. Is there somewhere I can check my payment status?

Yes, go to the IRS Child Tax Credit Update Portal. You'll need to create an ID.me account if you don't already have one. It will show your scheduled payment dates.

im confused why ur asking about CTC payments on the ny unemployment forum? those are federal tax credits not state unemployment benefits...maybe ur not getting answers cause ur asking in wrong place?

They're related because NY unemployment system is supposed to coordinate with IRS for auto-payment of CTCs for unemployed parents. It's part of the American Rescue Plan implementation.

oh i had no idea! that actually makes sense why my CTCs started coming after I got approved for unemployment. sorry for the confusion

Whatever you do, DON'T just wait around hoping it'll resolve itself! My neighbor did that and ended up missing out on nearly $3000 in payments because she didn't follow up within the required timeframe. There's a 90-day window to claim retroactive payments after your approval date.

There's a new Child Tax Credit hotline specifically for unemployment recipients: 833-981-2377. They set it up last month because so many people were having this exact problem. I called and had my issue fixed in one call.
