Amended my NY unemployment taxes - will this mess up my child tax credit payments?
Just had to amend my 2022 tax return because the unemployment amount was wrong. I got a letter showing they calculated my benefits at $14,230 but my tax return only showed $11,840. So I filed an amendment last month to fix it and get the extra tax refund. But now I'm worried this might mess up my monthly child tax credit payments I've been getting for my two kids. They've been coming regularly on the 15th, but with this amendment processing, I'm not sure if they'll suddenly stop or get delayed. Has anyone dealt with this before? Can amending your return for unemployment benefits affect child tax credit payments?

I amended my taxes back in April for a similar reason (they had my unemployment benefits listed wrong). My child tax credit payments kept coming normally every month after that. The amendment took like 16 weeks to process but didnt affect my monthly payments at all. I think theyre separate systems.

•That's a relief to hear! Thanks for sharing your experience. Did you get a letter when your amendment was processed?

•Yep, got a letter about 4 months later saying it was processed and they were sending the additional refund. The whole thing was pretty smooth tbh

•Not always smooth tho. My brother amended and they froze everything for like 3 months. Depends who looks at your file i guess 🤷♂️

After wasting weeks trying to reach someone at ny unemployment about my amended return, I finally found this service claimyr.com that got me connected to an actual human! They called for me, waited on hold, then transferred the call when an agent picked up. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast and they confirmed my child tax credit wouldn't be affected by the amendment. Check out this video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•100% worked for me! I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying to call for days. Had an agent on the phone within an hour.

•wait so how does this work exactly? they just call for you?

•Yep! You tell them which dept you need, they make the calls and wait on hold (which was taking 3+ hours when I tried myself), then when a real person picks up, they connect the call to your phone. Saved me so much time and frustration.

•another day another miracle solution to the unemployment system... 🙄

•Not a miracle, just a practical solution. I was banging my head against the wall trying to get through myself. This just took the hold time out of the equation for me.

I had this EXACT situation happen in May. Amended my return because unemployment numbers were wrong. Child tax credit kept coming normally, but my amendment is STILL processing almost 5 months later. So frustrating.

The IRS moves soooo slow with everything. I amended my taxes last year (not for unemployment tho) and it took 8 MONTHS to process. But it didnt stop any of my other payments or credits. They just take forever to do anything.

•8 months!? omg that's insane. i'm only at month 2 waiting for mine 😭

•Yeah the wait times are ridiculous. And calling them is pointless cuz you never get through to a human.

•Pro tip: call right when they open at 7am. I got through after only 20 min hold time doing that.

According to the IRS website, amending your return should NOT affect your advance Child Tax Credit payments as long as your amendment doesn't change your eligibility (like increasing your income above the threshold or changing the number of qualifying children). The monthly payments are based on your original processed return. However, there are some important things to know: - The IRS is EXTREMELY backlogged with processing amended returns currently - Processing time is averaging 16-20 weeks (much longer than their usual timeline) - You can check your amendment status online using the "Where's My Amended Return" tool - If you don't receive a payment you think you should have gotten, you can check the CTC Update Portal If you're really concerned, I'd recommend using claimyr.com to get through to someone at unemployment who can verify your specific situation. I had a similar issue and spent days trying to call with no luck, then used Claimyr and got connected to an agent who resolved everything in one call. Worst case scenario, even if there's a temporary issue with your payments, you'll get any missing amounts when you file your 2023 taxes next year.

my cousin amended her taxes in february and her ctc payments stopped for 2 months then started again. when she called they said it was just a "processing delay" and they backpaid the missed months. total nightmare dealing with the irs tbh

This is why I'm scared to amend mine even though I know unemployment reported the wrong amount on mine too. The whole system is a mess. I'd rather just lose that money than risk messing up the ctc payments my kids rely on.

•Nah don't leave money on the table! File the amendment. Most people in this thread said it didn't affect their payments.

•maybe youre right... how much of a difference was your unemployment amount? mine's only off by like $650

•Mine was off by almost $3k! Definitely worth amending. Even for $650 tho, that's your money!

The NY unemployment system couldn't be more broken if they tried 🤦♀️ I've amended twice because they keep getting the numbers wrong. Ctc payments were fine.

Why tf is the unemployment system so bad at reporting the correct income amounts to begin with?? This seems like a widespread issue. I wonder how many people don't even notice the discrepancy.

HOT TIP: If you need to talk to a rep at unemployment about tax issues, don't waste time calling yourself. I used claimyr.com after trying for 2 weeks to get through. They called, waited on hold, and connected me with an agent. Got my issue resolved in one call.

•did u have to give them your ssn or any personal info?
0 coins
Zoe Stavros
•Nope! They just do the calling part - when they connect you to the agent, that's when you provide your info directly to unemployment.

•ok cool might try it then. been trying to reach someone for days

I work as a tax preparer (not giving professional advice here tho) and see this issue ALL THE TIME with ny unemployment. Amending usually doesn't affect CTC payments in my experience with clients. What does mess things up is if your income changes enough to affect your eligibility.

•That's good to know! The amendment won't change my income that dramatically - just about $2,400 difference in reported unemployment.

•You should be totally fine then. That's not enough to push most people over any thresholds.

side note but anyone else notice that when u try calling ny unemployment they hang up on you when the queue is full instead of letting u wait??? most frustrating system ever designed 😡

•Try claimyr.com - they keep calling back until they get through. Worked for me after days of getting disconnected.

From what I understand, amending your taxes might temporarily flag your account for review, but shouldnt permanently stop ctc payments. Might be a slight delay depending on what exactly you're amending.

Am I the only one who had no idea you could amend taxes for unemployment reporting errors? How do you even know what they reported vs what you reported?

•Check your 1099-G form from unemployment against what you put on your tax return. If there's a difference, you might need to amend.

I filed an amended return for the EXACT same reason in April. My ctc payments kept coming fine BUT my amendment is still "processing" according to the where's my amended return tool. It's been like 18 weeks now 🙄

One thing to keep in mind - the IRS and unemployment systems don't talk to each other very well. I amended my unemployment income and kept getting the CTC as normal, but when I filed the next year's taxes, it was a mess sorting it all out. Document everything!
