NY unemployment payment stopped - related to Child Tax Credit? Overpayment notice confusion

I've been on unemployment since August and everything was going fine until about 2 weeks ago. Suddenly my weekly payments stopped coming through. I checked my account and there's an overpayment notice for $5,720 but no explanation why. I've been claiming exactly the same way every week since I started. Could this be related to the Child Tax Credit I received last month? I've tried calling over 25 times in the past week but can't get through to anyone. The automated system just says I have an outstanding issue but gives zero details. Has anyone else had their benefits frozen because of receiving the Child Tax Credit? This is so frustrating because I have no idea what triggered this overpayment claim!

The Child Tax Credit shouldn't affect your unemployment at all. They're completely separate programs from different agencies. My guess is that DOL thinks you didn't report some income or they made a calculation error on their end. Keep trying to call them - that's the only way to get it resolved unfortunately.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking they were separate too, but got confused when both issues happened at the same time. Gonna keep trying to call I guess 😩

yeah i agree, CTC is federal tax credit and unemployment is state program. they don't talk to eachother like that.

I was having the EXACT same problem two months ago. Could NOT get through on the phones at all. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an actual human at ny unemployment in like 30 minutes. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast - found out they had flagged my account by mistake! Definitely check out this video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Does this actually work? Seems too good to be true tbh

100% worked for me! After 3 weeks of calling non-stop and getting nowhere, I was connected to an agent who fixed my issue in literally 10 minutes. Best decision I made during this whole unemployment nightmare.

I was super skeptical too but I was desperate. My bills were piling up and I needed that money. It connected me to a real agent who explained that there was a system flag on my account that needed manual review. Got my back payments within a week after that call.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

They don't promise to fix ur unemployment issues - they just get you past the impossible phone system. The actual agent fixes ur problem. That's why it worked for me when nothing else did.

I had an overpayment notice too last year. Turns out they thought I was working part-time and not reporting it (I wasn't). Took FOUR MONTHS to resolve because I couldn't get anyone on the phone. You absolutley need to talk to a human to fix this 😤

The NY unemployment system is completley BROKEN. I've been dealing with these clowns for months now. The overpayment notice is probably a mistake - they're notorious for this. Keep calling, try different times of day (early morning worked for me like 7:30am). Good luck!

What number are you calling? I've been using the main one on the website but maybe there's a better direct line?

I used the main number 888-209-8124. Just kept trying at different times. Some people say call right when they open but that never worked for me. I finally got through around 8am on a Wednesday.

Here's what you need to do to resolve this (I went through something similar in Feb): First, document EVERYTHING. Take screenshots of all your payment history and claims. Second, you absolutely must speak with an agent. This is critical and there's no way around it. The regular phone lines are impossible, but I finally got through using Claimyr.com - it was a game changer after weeks of frustration. Third, when you get an agent, ask them for the specific reason code for the overpayment. Don't just accept "there's an issue" - make them tell you the exact code and explanation. Fourth, if it's truly an error (which it sounds like it is), request a review and ask for a supervisor if the first agent can't help. Fifth, follow up with an email summary of your call to create a paper trail. The Child Tax Credit should have ZERO impact on your unemployment benefits. They're completely separate systems. My guess is this is a system error or they've confused your account with someone else's. Good luck and don't give up! The system is designed to be frustrating but persistence pays off.

This is SUPER helpful, thank you! I'll definitely try Claimyr since everyone seems to recommend it. I've been taking screenshots already thankfully.

Just wanted to add that asking for a supervisor is KEY. First level agents often don't have the authority to fix these issues.

Sounds like they flagged you for something random. happend to me too. There looking for any reason to deny benifits these days. You gotta fight it! 😤

I had a similar issue with an overpayment notice. After FINALLY getting through to someone, turns out they thought I was working because my previous employer reported me wrong. Took 3 calls to fix it but I got all my back pay. Don't give up!

Did you have to provide any additional documentation to prove you weren't working?

Yeah they made me send in a statement saying I wasn't employed and then they contacted my previous employer to confirm. Total mess but it got fixed eventually.

child tax credit is federal, unemployment is state. they don't communicate with each other like that. something else is going on.

Try contacting your state representative's office! I was in the same boat - couldn't reach anyone for weeks. Called my assemblyman's office and they have special contacts at unemployment and got my issue fixed in 4 days! Seriously, this is the hack nobody talks about enough.

THIS! 👆 My sister did this too and it worked. They have special channels.

Do I just look up who my local representative is and call their office? Will they actually help with something like this?

Yep, google your address + NY state assembly rep. Call their office and explain your situation. Their constituent services staff deal with unemployment issues ALL THE TIME.

Have yu tried going to a career center in person? sometimes face to face is better than these phone calls tbh

Most career centers can't help with claim issues anymore. They'll just tell you to call the main number. Ask me how I know 🤦‍♀️

ok so im in THIS EXACT situation right now. overpayment notice came outta nowhere. turns out they think I didnt report some freelance income (i did report it all). i finally got through using claimyr.com after two weeks of trying the regular number. agent told me it was a system error and fixed it on the spot. try that, seriously.
