Finally reached someone at NY unemployment who actually helped get my backpay

After nearly two months of nothing but frustration with the unemployment system, I finally got through to someone yesterday who actually knew what they were doing. I lost my job in August and filed right away, but my payments got stuck in some weird pending status by mid-September. The online portal showed everything as 'under review' with no explanation. I called the unemployment office every single day for weeks - sometimes 20+ times per day - and either couldn't get through or got disconnected. When I did reach someone, they'd just tell me to 'wait' or they'd 'escalate' my case (which did absolutely nothing). Yesterday I finally connected with an agent who actually listened to my situation, looked into my account thoroughly, and fixed whatever was causing the hold. She said something about a 'system flag' that shouldn't have been there. Within hours my portal updated, and this morning I woke up to all my back payments - $4,750 deposited at once! If you're stuck in limbo, don't give up. Keep calling until you get someone who knows what they're doing.

Congrats! I've been stuck in the same hell for the past 6 weeks. The online system is such trash and most of the ppl who answer phones don't seem to have any real authority to fix anything. How many times did you have to call before you got the good agent?

I seriously lost count... probably called like 300+ times over those weeks. What worked was calling right when they opened at 8am. That's when I got the helpful person.

300 calls 🤯 omg this system is so broken. I'll try the 8am thing tomorrow, thanks!

early morning has worked for me in the past too. Those first 30 mins when they open seem to be the sweet spot

I was in the same nightmare situation but found this service called Claimyr that got me through to a rep in under an hour! Seriously it was the best decision ever - they just call for you, wait on hold, then connect you to a live agent when someone picks up. After trying for weeks on my own, I used them and finally got my issue fixed within a day. Here's their intro video if you're interested: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

No catch! They just call and wait on hold for you. Was worth every penny since I was about to miss another rent payment. They connected me to a rep who cleared my whole backlog of payments.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS?

It worked for me! After 3 weeks of trying on my own, I was connected to an agent in about 45 minutes using their service. Got my benefits sorted right away instead of burning more hours on redial.

I was skeptical too but used it last month when I was desperate. It actually works - they just do the hold waiting for you and call when an agent picks up. claimyr.com saved me hours of frustration

The whole system is design to make u quit. They hope you'll just give up and stop trying to get what YOU PAID INTO. I had to call 40+ times a day for TWO MONTHS to get my issue fixed. The state is just hopin people will walk away from there money.

This gives me hope! I've been stuck in limbo for 7 weeks. Haven't been able to pay rent and had to borrow money from friends. Did the agent tell you why your payments were held up? Mine just says 'pending review' with no other info.

She said there was a verification flag that shouldnt have been there - something about the system automatically flagging my claim because my employer filed something late. But honestly the other agents I talked to before shouldve caught it!

Thx for the info. The lack of transparency is infuriating. Gonna keep calling. 🙏

OMG ARE YOU ME?? 😂 Seriously this is exactly what happened to me last month. Called and called and either got disconnected or talked to people who literally couldn't do anything. Then FINALLY got one good agent who fixed everything in like 5 minutes. The whole system is broken af but there are some good workers out there who can actually help. Don't give up!

It's insane how much depends on which agent you get! The difference between the helpful one and everyone else was night and day.

I've fought with ny unemployment for months now. Here's what I've learned about getting actual help: First, documentation is key. Keep notes on EVERY call - who you spoke with, confirmation numbers, what they told you, dates/times. This helps when you finally reach someone competent. Second, be persistent but respectful. The system is broken, but the person on the phone didn't break it. Being polite while firmly explaining your situation works better than frustration. Third, try different contact methods - calls early morning, use the message portal, contact your state representative if you're truly stuck. Fourth, know your rights. Look up the official processing timelines for claims and appeals so you can reference them. Finally, if you're getting nowhere with regular calls, try using claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold for you and connect you directly to an agent. It saved me weeks of frustration and my backpay was processed within 48 hours after speaking with the agent they connected me with. Don't give up! The system is designed to be difficult, but persistence pays off.

This is gold 💯 Especially the part about contacting your state rep! My senator's office actually helped push my claim through when I was stuck for months.

i used claimyr too after seeing it recommended here. having someone else deal with the hold time was such a relief

Taking notes during calls is KEY! I wasn't doing this at first and kept getting the runaround. Once I started documenting everything, I could call them out when they gave contradictory info.

What time of day did you call? I've heard mornings are better but I can never get through no matter when I try 😫

I got through right when they opened at 8am. Seemed like there were shorter wait times and more experienced staff working the early shift.

If you're struggling to get through, try claimyr.com - they'll wait on hold so you don't have to. That's how I finally got my issue fixed!

I don't understand why some payments go through immediately and others get stuck in this weird limbo. My first two weeks were fine then suddenly everything stopped with no explanation. The website is useless for actually telling you what's wrong with your claim.

Same thing happened to me! First month was smooth sailing, then bam - 'pending review' with zero explanation. Took 6 weeks and countless calls to fix.

it's because their computer system is from like 1982 and runs on hamster wheels and prayer. NY unemployment technology is held together with duct tape fr 🤣

Throw this whole unemployment system in the trash. I've never dealt with anything so inefficient in my life. Glad you finally got your money tho!

Anyone else notice how they seem to put random holds on accounts for no reason? I swear they do this on purpose to save money hoping people will just give up. Sketchy af.

100% this! My cousin works for the state (not unemployment) and says they're understaffed on purpose. The harder it is to get benefits, the less they have to pay out. It's by design!

ppl always say this but idk. might just be regular government incompetence rather than some conspiracy. either way the system is completely broken

Maybe not a conspiracy but definitely designed to be difficult. They don't mind if the process is frustrating enough to make people quit.

What specifically did the agent do to fix your issue? I'm wondering if I could suggest the same solution when I finally get through to someone.

She said she removed an incorrect verification flag on my account. Apparently it was requiring additional verification that wasn't actually needed in my case. She also did a manual review of my weekly certifications that had been held up.

This is why I always tell people to KEEP CALLING no matter what! The first agent rarely has the power or knowledge to fix complicated issues. You have to get to tier 2 support or whatever they call it. Congrats on getting your $$!

My issue turned out to be my former employer contesting my claim even though I was clearly laid off. The first 5 agents I spoke with never mentioned this - it wasn't until I reached someone competent that they actually told me what was happening behind the scenes.

this happened to my roommate too! And then when she finally found out, she had to submit all this additional documentation that no one had asked for previously. took her 3 months to resolve.
