NY unemployment claim filed 3 months ago - still no payment despite monetary determination
I filed my NY unemployment claim on January 11, 2025, and still haven't received ANY payments. Got my monetary determination letter about three weeks ago, but nothing since then. Every time I call, I get the runaround - either "your claim is still fairly new" or "there's an issue we're working on" but NO DETAILS about what the actual problem is! It's been over 3 months now and I'm getting desperate. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm starting to think they're just giving me the same canned responses and not actually working on my claim at all. How long is this supposed to take??

Unfortunately this is more common than you'd think. When they say "there's an issue," it usually means there's an eligibility question that needs to be resolved. Did you have any unusual circumstances with your employment separation? Were you fired, quit, or laid off? Sometimes a former employer contests the claim, which can cause these long delays. You should specifically ask what the "issue" is and request to speak with a claims examiner.

•I was laid off, nothing unusual at all! My employer even told me they wouldn't contest it. It's so frustrating because different agents tell me different things. I've asked about the "issue" multiple times but they just say "it's under review" with no details. How am I supposed to fix something if they won't tell me what's wrong??

same thing hapend to me last year! took almost 4 months to get paid and they never really gave me a reason why. kept saying "pending review" over and over. just keep calling them every week and eventually someone will actually help. thats what worked for me anyway. good luck!!

•4 MONTHS?? I can't wait that long! Did you ever find out what the holdup was? Did you have to do anything special to finally get it resolved?

I had exactly this problem in February. Called dozens of times, could never get a straight answer. What finally worked was using Claimyr to get through to an actual agent instead of waiting on hold for hours. The website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Once I got through to a real person (took about 5 minutes), I found out there was a flag on my account because my employer had reported different wages than what I claimed. The agent was able to verify my paystubs right there and release my payments. All the backpay came through 3 days later. Without getting to that specific agent, I might still be waiting.

•Yes, it worked for me after weeks of frustration. The regular phone system is basically impossible to navigate. When I finally got through, the agent told me exactly what the issue was (wage discrepancy) and fixed it immediately.

Anyone else notice how the NYSDOL keeps people in the dark on purpose? They don't tell you what's wrong because then you might actually fix it and they'd have to pay you. I've been dealing with them for years and it's always the same story. "Under review" is code for "we're hoping you give up."

•I understand the frustration, but most delays are actually due to the overwhelming number of claims and outdated processing systems. The representatives you speak with often don't have access to the detailed status of your claim - they can only see what stage it's in, not the specific issues being reviewed. It's a system problem, not individual representatives trying to withhold information.

•That's exactly what they want you to think! I work in IT and there's NO WAY their systems are so bad they can't tell you what's wrong with your claim. It's by design. They save MILLIONS by delaying claims and hoping people just give up.

Have you been certifying for benefits every week while waiting? This is super important - if you miss certifying for any week, you won't get paid for that week even after your claim is approved. Also, check your spam folder for emails from NYSDOL. Sometimes they send requests for additional information that get filtered out.

•Yes, I've been certifying religiously every Sunday morning! And I check my spam folder daily. Nothing from them at all except the monetary determination letter. It's like my claim went into a black hole after that.

my cousin had this happen and it turned out there was a identity verification thing they needed but never told him about it. you should ask specifically if there's any documents they need from you that might be holding things up.

•That's a good idea. I'll specifically ask about identity verification and any other documents they might need. Thanks for the suggestion!

Based on what you've described, there are several potential causes for this delay: 1. Identity verification issues - very common in 2025 with the new security protocols 2. Employer response delays - they have 10 business days to respond to claims 3. Wage discrepancy investigation 4. Prior claim issues that need resolution 5. Work search documentation gaps Here's what you should do: 1. Request to speak specifically with a claims examiner, not just a general rep 2. Ask for the specific issue code on your account (they can see this) 3. Request a supervisor if they won't provide details 4. Mention Section 590.1 of NY Labor Law which requires prompt payment of benefits 5. Submit a message through your online account specifically requesting claim status detail The fact that you received a monetary determination is actually positive - it means you're financially eligible. The hold-up is likely related to one of the non-monetary eligibility factors.

•Thank you! This is incredibly helpful. I didn't know about Section 590.1 - I'll definitely mention that. And you're right, I've been talking to general reps who probably can't see the details. I'll insist on speaking to a claims examiner or supervisor next time.

•You're welcome! One more tip: when you call, try to reach them early in the morning (right when they open) or later in the afternoon (around 3:30-4:00pm). The wait times are usually shorter, and you're more likely to get connected to senior staff who can actually resolve issues rather than just provide status updates.

Any updates on your situation? Were you able to get through and find out what's happening with your claim?

•Finally got some answers! I ended up using Claimyr like you suggested and got through to someone in about 8 minutes. Turns out there was an employer verification issue AND an identity verification problem. My former employer had 10 days to respond but never did, and instead of moving forward, my claim just sat there. The agent pushed it through manually and said I should receive payment within 3-5 business days. THANK YOU all for your help - would have been completely lost without this forum!
