How to send email attachment to NY unemployment for my grandmother?
Hi everyone! I'm trying to help my grandmother submit a document to NY unemployment. She got a letter requesting some information, but it needs to be sent as an attachment. When I logged into her account, I can see the messaging portal but there's no option to attach any files! Does anyone know if there's a specific DOL email address where I can send this document from her personal email? The deadline is next week and I'm getting worried. Thanks for any help!

•That's what I thought too, but I can't find any option to attach a file in the message center. Have you ever attached documents through there?

The NY DOL doesn't generally provide a direct email for attachments for security reasons. What specific document are they requesting? Different documents have different submission methods. Some need to be faxed, others uploaded through a specific section in the portal (not the regular message center).

•It's an appeal letter with some supporting documents for her benefits determination. The letter says to 'submit all documentation' but doesn't specify how to send attachments.

For appeal documents, you need to go to the "My Documents" section in her online account, not the message center. There should be an option to upload documents there. Click on "Upload a Document" and you'll see drop-down options for document type where you can select "Appeal" or "Supporting Documentation." If that option isn't available, call the Appeals department directly at 518-402-0191. They can provide specific instructions for your grandmother's case.

•Thank you! I'll check the "My Documents" section tonight. I didn't know that was separate from the message center.

I had the EXACT same problem last month!! The My Documents section didn't work for me either! I kept getting an error saying "file type not supported" even though I tried PDF, JPG, everything. So frustrating!!! I ended up having to fax everything which was a huge headache.

•The file size limit is pretty small too. I think it's only like 1 MB which is nothing if you're scanning multiple pages. I had to keep reducing the quality until it worked.

The NY DOL fax is 518-457-9378 for appeals but MAKE SURE you include her NY.gov ID and claim number on EVERY single page!! I sent 12 pages last year and they "lost" half of them because I only had her info on the cover sheet. The whole thing got denied and I had to start all over!! 😡😡

•That's terrible! Thanks for the warning. I'll definitely put her info on every page if we have to fax it.

Have you tried calling them directly? I know it's nearly impossible to get through on the regular unemployment line, but I used Claimyr.com to reach an agent within minutes a few weeks ago. They have a service that connects you directly to an unemployment agent instead of waiting on hold for hours. They have a quick demo video here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent I spoke with gave me a direct email address where I could send my documents as attachments. It was something like ui.documents@labor.ny.gov but it might be different for appeals specifically.

Just to clarify, ui.documents@labor.ny.gov is NOT for sending sensitive documents. The DOL explicitly states not to send personal information to any email address, even if it looks official. This is for security reasons. For appeals specifically, use the "My Online Forms" section of your NY.gov account, not "My Documents." There should be an Appeals form there with document upload capabilities. If you still can't find it, call the dedicated Appeals line at 518-402-0191.

•Thank you for the correction! I'll check the "My Online Forms" section instead. I'd prefer to submit everything electronically if possible rather than faxing.

Actually i just remembered something - when I had trouble with the online forms I went to the local career center in person and they helped me submit everything right there! The lady was super nice and even made copies of all my stuff for free. Might be worth trying if your grandmother lives near one?

•That's a great idea! There's a career center about 20 minutes from her. If I can't figure out the online system I'll take her there. Thank you!

Honestly I wouldnt bother with all this online nonsense. I printed everything out and mailed it CERTIFIED so they had to sign for it. That way they cant say they didnt get it!!! The address is on the letter they sent her.

Update for 2025: The NY DOL recently updated their online portal. Now there's a specific section for appeals documents. From the main dashboard: 1. Click on "More Online Services" 2. Select "Upload Documents" 3. Choose "Appeal Documents" from the dropdown 4. You can attach up to 5 files (5MB max each) This change was made in January 2025, so some people might not be aware of it yet. This is now the preferred method for submitting appeal-related attachments.

•Thank you so much! I just checked and found the section you mentioned. I was able to upload all her documents successfully. Such a relief!

That's amazing news that you got it figured out! For anyone else reading this thread in the future, it's worth noting that the NY DOL system can be really confusing with all the different sections. If you're ever stuck, the updated "More Online Services" > "Upload Documents" path that Riya mentioned seems to be the current best practice. I've bookmarked this thread because I know I'll probably need to help other family members with this stuff eventually. Good luck with your grandmother's appeal!

•This is such a helpful thread! I'm dealing with a similar situation for my elderly father and was getting so frustrated with the system. It's really reassuring to see that there's a clear solution now with the updated portal. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - it's so valuable to have real people explaining the actual steps that work rather than trying to decipher the official government instructions.

Just wanted to chime in as someone who works at a local One-Stop Career Center - we see this confusion A LOT! The NY DOL portal has gone through so many updates that even we sometimes have to hunt around to find where things moved. @Riya Sharma thanks for sharing that updated path - I'm going to pass that along to my colleagues so we can help folks more efficiently. One thing I always tell people is to take screenshots of each step when you successfully upload documents, just in case there are any technical glitches later. The system will usually give you a confirmation number too - definitely save that! And for anyone still having trouble, don't hesitate to visit your local career center. We're here to help and it's literally part of our job to navigate these systems with you.

•@Caleb Bell That s'so helpful to hear from someone who actually works at a career center! I had no idea you all were seeing this confusion regularly - it makes me feel less frustrated about how confusing the system can be. The screenshot tip is brilliant, I wish I had thought of that earlier. It s'really reassuring to know that career center staff are there specifically to help with these technical issues. I think a lot of people myself (included assume) you have to figure everything out on your own online, but having that in-person support option is so valuable especially for older adults who might not be as comfortable with constantly changing web interfaces.
