Need help getting my friend's documents to NY unemployment without social media
My roommate has been trying to finalize her unemployment claim since April but keeps hitting roadblocks because she doesn't use any social media accounts. The unemployment office needs additional verification documents from her, but their website keeps glitching when she tries to upload them. She's called over 30 times in the past two weeks with no luck getting through to an actual person. I told her I'd try to help since I've been through the unemployment process before. She's super stressed because her savings are running dangerously low (down to about $780) and her last job didn't give her final paycheck yet. She tried going to the local office in person last Wednesday, but they just told her she needed to upload everything online or call the main number - which is exactly what wasn't working in the first place! Anyone know a reliable way to get these documents submitted or a direct contact that actually works? She's about to get evicted if this doesn't get resolved by next month.

Went through the same nightmare back in February. The system is designed to make people give up. Try having her fax the documents if possible - sometimes the older methods actually work better with these dinosaur agencies.

•Thanks! Do you know the fax number we should use? Also, should she include her claim ID on every page?

•Yeah include the claim ID on EVERY page! Fax number should be on their website somewhere, but I think it's different depending on which office handles her claim. Check their contact page.

•Faxing worked for me too! Make sure she keeps the fax confirmation page as proof she submitted everything. NY unemployment loves to say they never received stuff 🙄

After weeks of trying to call and getting nowhere, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was a game changer. They basically wait on hold for you then call when they get a real person. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast compared to the endless phone tag game. Check out this video that explains it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Totally get the skepticism - I felt the same way. But when you've called 50+ times with no luck, you get desperate. It actually connected me to a rep who fixed my claim same day.

•wait does this thing actually work? been trying to reach someone for like a month now

•It worked for me! They don't do anything magical - they just have a system that calls repeatedly and stays on hold so you don't have to. When a human finally answers, they connect you.

•my cousin used this too, said it was the best thing ever after spending literally days on hold. worth every penny when ur benefits are stuck

Tell her to try contacting her state rep! I was stuck in limbo for 6 weeks, called my assemblymember's office and magically my claim was processed 3 days later. They have special contacts within the unemployment office.

The whole no social media thing makes it SO MUCH HARDER because NY unemployment has been using Twitter to help people with claims (which is ridiculous but whatever). If she can stomach it, might be worth making a temp Twitter just to DM them. That's how I finally got help.

•She's really opposed to making any social accounts (privacy concerns) but at this point she might not have a choice. Did they actually respond to your DMs quickly?

•took like 2-3 days but they did respond and escalated my case. better than the phone system at least 🤷♀️

OMG THE DOCUMENT UPLOAD SYSTEM IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST 🤬 I had to try 4 different browsers before it worked. Tell her to try Microsoft Edge specifically - for whatever reason that was the only one that worked for me.

•She's tried Chrome, Firefox and Safari already. Will def have her try Edge next - thanks for the tip!

•also make sure the file size isn't too big!! they reject anything over like 2MB but don't tell you that's the problem 🤦♂️

Here's exactly what she needs to do (I work as a career counselor and help people with this all the time): 1. If the online system isn't working, she should mail physical copies of all documents with a cover letter explaining the situation. Send it certified mail so there's proof of delivery. 2. Simultaneously, call right when they open (7:30am) - that's when wait times are shortest. 3. While waiting for that to process, contact her state representative AND state senator (do both). Their offices can often expedite claims. 4. If she has access to a fax machine, fax the documents as well with a clear cover sheet listing her claim ID and contact info. 5. Try claimyr.com if she's still having trouble reaching someone by phone. I've had several clients use it successfully to get through when they were desperate. The system is incredibly frustrating but persistence through MULTIPLE channels simultaneously is what works. Don't put all hopes in one method.

•this is actually really solid advice. the multiple channels approach is key - they can't ignore you forever if you're coming at them from all directions!

•Can confirm the state rep thing works. My cousin did this and her claim was fixed in a week after being stuck for months.

not to sound like a conspiracy theorist but they DELIBERATELY make it hard to submit docs and reach them. less people getting benefits = less money they have to pay out. keep pushing and don't give up, that's what they want

•100% this ☝️ NY unemployment system is designed to frustrate people into giving up. The more roadblocks they put up, the more people abandon their claims.

•this is facts. when i worked at a call center we were literally trained to transfer difficult calls around until people hung up 💀

does she have access to a library? the one near me has unemployment specialists who help people submit documents and navigate the system. totally free service too

•Wait really?? I had no idea libraries did this. Will definitely check if our local branch offers something similar. Thanks!

After 3 weeks of trying everything, i finally just went in person to the office at 6am (2 hours before they opened) and waited in line. Was one of the first people in and FINALLY got everything resolved. Sometimes you gotta do the extreme route if nothing else works.

•I second this. online system is trash, phone system is worse. in-person is the only guaranteed way but you MUST get there early

•which office did you go to? the one downtown told me they don't handle document submission in person anymore 😡

•The Brooklyn office on Livingston St. they told me the same thing but i literally refused to leave until someone helped me lol. eventually a manager took pity and helped upload everything right there

In case nobody mentioned it yet - make sure all her docs are PDF format (not jpg or png) and under 2MB each. The system rejected mine 6 times before someone told me this was why.

•This could definitely be part of the problem! She's been taking photos of documents with her phone. I'll help her scan and convert them to PDFs.

•if u dont have a scanner, theres free apps like adobe scan that convert phone pics to pdfs! game changer for me

Since no one else mentioned it - sometimes the NY unemployment website works COMPLETELY differently on mobile vs desktop. Have her try submitting from a completely different device if possible.

im in ur exact same boat frfr. what helped me was calling at EXACTLY 7:30:00 am when they first open. like literally set an alarm for 7:29 and be ready to dial. still took a few tries but WAY better than calling midday when its impossible

•Also try calling on Wednesday - for some reason it seems to be their least busy day. Avoid Mondays at all costs!

I was in the same situation and honestly Claimyr.com saved me. It's the only way I could connect with a live person after weeks of trying. Got my claim sorted in one call after they connected me. It's worth checking out if she's desperate - https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE has more info.

•Nah just sharing what worked for me after nothing else did. Been there done that with the endless hold music and disconnects. When ur about to be evicted you'll try anything.

•I was skeptical too but my neighbor used it last month and said it was the only thing that worked after trying for weeks. Desperate times...

Has she tried emailing them at the claims support email? Takes forever to get a response (like 5-7 days) but they eventually did help me submit docs when the portal wasn't working.

•Do you have that email address? She's been using the general contact form on the website but never gets any response.

•I think it was something like claims.support@labor.ny.gov but double check that on their website. Make sure she puts her claim ID in the subject line!!
