Anyone know a way to actually talk to a human at NY unemployment?
Been trying to reach ny unemployment for 3 weeks now about my claim that got flagged for 'identity verification' even though I've been on unemployment since December. Every time I call, I spend hours listening to the stupid automated system just to get disconnected. Tried calling at 8am, 10am, 2pm, and 4:30pm but same result every time. The website is useless too - keeps sending me in circles and says 'call the office' whenever I try to upload my ID documents. I've sent like 5 emails through their contact form but just get generic auto-replies. I'm missing almost $2,400 in payments now and my rent is past due. This is beyond frustrating. Has anyone actually gotten through to a real person recently? Any secret numbers or tricks?

I feel ur pain!! I'm in the exact same mess with them flagging me for ID verification even though I've been getting benefits for months already. Like how does that even make sense??

Right??? Like they already verified me in December. Why am I suddenly suspicious now? 🤔

After 2 weeks of calling nonstop and getting nowhere, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual agent. I was super skeptical but it actually worked! They call for you, stay on hold, and then connect you when a real person picks up. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast. Check out this vid if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've tried everything to reach them

Yeah it does. You pay them to wait on hold for you basically. When they get someone they call you and connect you. Took about 2 hours but beats me calling for 3 weeks straight

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

It's literally just a hold service. They don't need any of your claim info or anything sensitive. They just call and wait, then connect you when someone answers. Simple but worth it when you've been struggling for weeks

My roommate used it and got his issue fixed in one day after trying for weeks. The hold times are insane rn

The only time I got through was by calling at EXACTLY 7:59am and hitting all the options before they even finished the prompts. Still waited 3.5 hours tho. The system is a complete joke.

Try calling (888) 209-8124 and pressing 9 when it asks for your social. Sometimes it bypasses the identification step and gets you closer to a human.

Look I understand the frustration BUT everyone else is also trying to get through. They're prob getting thousands of calls a day with their crappy outdated system. The best approach is consistency - keep at it and you'll eventually break through. Took me 32 calls over 9 days before I got a human.

32 calls is nothing lmao. I'm on call 87 in the last two weeks. Spend half my day on hold and still nada.

bootlicker vibes. the system is DESIGNED to be impossible to navigate. they don't WANT to pay us.

Here's what has worked for some people I know (full disclosure: I work in IT not for unemployment): 1) Call the TEL-SERVICE number instead of the main line: 888-581-5812 2) Try calling on Wednesday afternoons - statistically fewer people call then 3) Use the callback feature on the website (but this can take 2+ weeks) 4) Contact your state representative's office - they often have direct channels 5) If you're desperate and need immediate help, services like claimyr.com can wait on hold for you (this is what finally worked for my brother after 3 weeks of trying) The ID verification issue is super common right now because they're dealing with the aftermath of all that fraud from last year. Once you actually get through to someone, the fix is usually quick. Also check if you got any physical mail from them. Sometimes they send important notices through regular mail that don't show up in your online account.

Thanks for these tips. My cousin works for the state (not unemployment) and she said they're insanely understaffed right now.

Do NOT just call the regular number. I got through by reaching out to my state assemblymember's office. They have a direct line to DOL and got my issue fixed in 48 hours.

How do you find your assemblymember? Sorry if that's a dumb question

Not dumb at all! Go to nyassembly.gov and enter your address in the 'find my member' search box. Call their office and explain your situation. They deal with this stuff all day.

I work nights so I called at 3am (they say 24/7 service) and got through in 20 mins. Maybe try off-peak hours?

Yep! Fewer calls in the middle of the night. The trade-off is you sometimes get reps who seem half-asleep or are still in training.

Try emailing your documents to unemployment with the SUBJECT LINE: URGENT ID VERIFICATION - [YOUR CLAIM #]. It worked for me but took ~10 days to get a response.

I used the contact form on the NY DOL site and then got a reply from nysui@labor.ny.gov - you can reply directly to that email

When they wanted to interview me about a "job refusal" my phone rang immediately. When I need help with ID verification? Crickets for 3 weeks.

Mailing physical documents to the Albany office sometimes gets faster results than the online system. Sounds crazy but worked for me - include a cover letter explaining the situation and your contact info.

Im not even kidding, tweet at them @NYSLabor with your issue (don't include personal info). Their social media team sometimes responds and escalates cases.

After 5 weeks of this nonsense I finally broke down and used claimyr.com - connected with an agent in under 2 hours. My identity verification was cleared in 10 minutes once I actually talked to someone. Ridiculous that we have to pay extra just to access our benefits but it saved my sanity.

It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after weeks of trying. Worth every penny when you're about to get evicted and need your benefits!

Ugh, I went through this exact same thing last month. The ID verification is a total nightmare. When I finally got through, the agent told me they've been swamped with fraud cases so they're extra paranoid about verification now.

Yeah after 3.5 weeks. It was resolved in literally 5 minutes once I got through to an actual person. They could see all my documents in the system - they just hadn't been reviewed yet.
