NY unemployment keeps rejecting my ID verification photos - sent 4 times already!

I'm at my wits end with this ID verification nightmare. Lost my job back in July and applied for unemployment benefits right away. Everything seemed to be going smoothly until I got an email in August asking me to verify my identity by uploading photos of my driver's license. No problem, I thought. Took clear pictures of both sides and uploaded them through their portal. Two weeks later, I got another email saying my verification was rejected because the "images were unclear" and to try again. So I took even better photos with better lighting, made sure there was no glare, and sent them again. Fast forward to September, ANOTHER email saying my verification failed because they "couldn't read some information" on my ID. I'm super careful this time - used a scanning app on my phone, made everything crystal clear, and resubmitted. Now it's October, and guess what? Just got ANOTHER email saying I need to resend my ID verification! I've called the regular unemployment number like 25 times and can never get through to an actual person. I'm almost 3 months without income now, bills are piling up, and I'm about to lose my apartment. Has anyone managed to actually get hold of a real person who can help with this ridiculous verification loop? Any special number I should call instead of the main line?

Same thing happend to me!! its so frustrating. After the 3rd rejection i was ready to smash my laptop. Finally found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human at unemployment. The agent looked at my case and told me that the system kept auto-rejecting because my license had a tiny smudge in the corner that tripped up their verification software! She manually approved it right on the spot and my benefits started coming the next week. Totally worth checking out - it was the only way I got my issue fixed after 2 months of the same rejection emails.

sounds like more scammy bs... does that actually work?

Yeah I get the skepticism. I was desperate by that point and willing to try anything. It's just a service that calls and waits on hold for you, then connects the call once a human picks up. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Yes! That's exactly what happened to me. Kept getting disconnected or waiting on hold forever. With this thing I got through to an agent in about 45 minutes without having to sit there listening to that awful hold music. Best decision I made - got my benefits flowing again right away.

I get it, spending money when you're waiting for unemployment seems backwards. But for me it was worth every penny to finally get my backpay unlocked. I was owed thousands and spending a little to unlock that was a no-brainer after months of frustration.

Try taking the pictures against a dark background. That worked for me after 2 rejections. Also make sure theres absolutely no glare or shadows on the ID. The system is super picky about this stuff.

This is happening to literally everyone I kno. NY unemployment system is such garbage. I sent in my verification like 6 times before getting through. What finally worked was using my friend's iphone (I had android) and the scanner app. Apparently their system has issues with certain phone cameras? Makes zero sense but might be worth trying.

omg yes! I had the same experience. Android photos kept getting rejected. Borrowed my mom's iPhone and BOOM approved first try. The system is totally biased against certain phones 😤

I'll try to borrow an iPhone from someone. I've been using a Samsung galaxy to take the pics. Seriously appreciate the tip!!

I work in IT and this is a common problem with automated verification systems. Try these steps: 1. Use a flatbed scanner if possible (not phone) 2. Save as PDF not JPEG 3. Make sure file is under 5MB but over 300 DPI 4. Ensure ALL four corners of ID are visible 5. If you must use phone, use a scanning app with "document" mode 6. Place ID on dark blue or black background If all else fails, you NEED to speak with a human. The regular numbers are useless. The only way I've found to actually reach someone is to either: 1) call right when they open at 8:00am exactly, 2) use a service like Claimyr (claimyr.com) which will wait on hold for you, or 3) contact your state representative's office and ask for help intervening. The NY system has been absolute chaos since they "upgraded" the software last year. I've helped dozens of people with similar issues. Don't give up - persistence is key!

This guy knows what hes talking about. The dark background trick is super important - their software needs contrast to detect edges.

Thank you for such a detailed response! I don't have a scanner but I'll try the dark background idea. Hadn't thought about file type either. If that doesn't work I'll check out that Claimyr service.

have u tried contacting ur local assemblymember or state senator? I was in id verification hell for 2 months, called my assemblyman's office, and they have special contacts at unemployment who fixed it in 3 days. Serious game changer.

I didn't even think of this! How do you find your assemblymember?

Just google "find my NY state assemblymember" and enter your address. They have staff whose literal job is to help with gov agencies. Good luck!

The secret number I used was 888-209-8124 but you have to call exactly at 8:00:00 am. Not 8:01, not 7:59. Exactly when they open. Then press 1, then 6, then 1 again. This bypasses some of the automated garbage. Took me 3 tries but finally got a human who fixed my issue.

This is the regular number tho? Never works for me no matter what time I call 😩

You have to be calling EXACTLY at 8:00am when their system resets. Like, set an alarm for 7:59 and have the number ready to dial. It's stupid but it sometimes works.

I tried this method like 10 times and it never worked. Always got the "we're experiencing high call volume" message. Claimyr.com was the only way I actually got through.

My verification kept getting rejected too. what worked for me was going to the DMV and getting a printed paper temporary license. The system accepted that on the first try when my regular license kept getting rejected. Something about the temp license being printed on white paper with no holograms made it easier for their system to process.

the ny unemployment system is LITERAL GARBAGE. ive been dealing with them for 9 months and still havent gotten a penny. their ID system rejected my perfectly clear photos 4 times. finally i just uploaded a pic of my passport instead and it went thru immediately. try using a different form of ID if you have one.

I don't have a passport but I do have a state ID card. Maybe I'll try that instead of my license. Thanks for the suggestion!

The true trick that nobody talks about: mailbox game. Contact every single person listed on the NYSDOL website. Email the commissioner. Email the deputy commissioner. Email the director of UI. Email them ALL. I sent like 15 emails to different people and suddenly my issue was resolved in 48 hours after being stuck for months.

This is the way. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. I did this + called my state senator's office. Problem solved in a week after 3 months of nothing.

Anyone notice how the system seems to "randomly" target certain people for extra verification? My husband and I both applied same day, same documents, same everything. His went through immediately, mine got stuck in verification hell for 2 months. Makes you wonder if there's some kinda profiling going on... 🤔

I've noticed this too! People with "foreign sounding" names seem to get flagged more often. Not saying it's intentional discrimination but the algorithm definitely has some bias.

Its not random at all. They use risk scoring based on a ton of factors. If your address changed recently, if your employer reported different info, if you've had UI before, etc.

Either way it sucks. We need a better system than this garbage.

Had this exact problem with id verification. Kept sendng pics for months and nothing worked. Finally I gave up on the online portal and just FAXED my id to them (yes, fax lol). Got approved in 48 hours. Sometimes the old school methods work better with these dinosaur agencies.

Who has a fax machine in 2023?! 😂

I used an online fax service lol. But I swear this worked when nothing else did. Government agencies love their 1990s technology.

Here's a wild thought that worked for me - I cropped my ID photos VERY precisely. Like, cut off everything except the actual ID itself, no background visible at all. The system seemed to struggle when there was too much background in the image. After I did this, approved on first try after 3 rejections.
