What docs needed to verify eligibility for ny unemployment in Spanish? Help!
So I have a family member who doesn't speak English well trying to apply for unemployment in New York. We already filed the initial claim in December but now they're asking for verification documents to prove eligibility. The problem is she doesn't understand what they're asking for because all the communications are in English! When we try calling, we wait for hours and never get through to anyone who speaks Spanish. The website translation feature is terrible - some parts don't translate at all. What documentation did you guys need to send in to prove you qualify? She worked at a restaurant for 2 years before being laid off in November, but they're saying something about insufficient work history or missing information. We uploaded her W-2 forms from 2022 and 2023 already but got some notice about needing more proof. The deadline to submit everything is in 5 days and we're panicking! Anyone gone through this who can help?

I had the same prob with my cousin few months back. They need proof of ID (drivers license or state ID), social security card, and proof of employment - so like pay stubs, termination letter from the job, or employment verification letter. If they saying insufficient work history then you needa show more pay stubs to prove she worked consistently. Btw, try calling right at 8:00am when they open, that's when I got thru.

•Thank you so much! We have her ID and SS card already uploaded, but I didn't know about needing pay stubs too. The restaurant gave her a termination letter but it was handwritten - not sure if that's acceptable? Do you know if they need ALL the pay stubs or just a few months?

•Handwritten should be ok as long as it has the company info on it. For pay stubs, I sent like one from each quater to show consistent work. Good luck!

•Not to butt in but make sure the termination letter is signed and dated by a manager with their contact info. My brother got rejected because his letter wasnt 'official' enough 🙄

After weeks of trying to get through to ny unemployment I finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to a real agent! Saved me so much time and frustration. They called and waited on hold for me then connected me when a Spanish-speaking agent was available. It was the best money I've spent to get my benefits sorted out quickly. I was ready to give up before finding them at claimyr.com - check out this video too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Yeah it actually works! They have spanish speaking agents too. I was super skeptical at first but was desperate after trying for weeks. You just pay them to wait on hold instead of you and they call when someone picks up.

•sounds like some kinda scam... why would anybody pay for something the govt should provide for free? 🤔

•not a scam at all! when you've been trying to reach someone for weeks and your bills are piling up, the cost is totally worth it. i got my benefits sorted in one day after waiting for a month trying to call myself.

•Hmm I've seen this mentioned before on here. Did they need any weird personal info or anything?

•Nope! They just call the same number we all call, wait on hold, and then connect you when someone answers. Saved me literal days of being on hold.

For Spanish services, press 9 when you call the main number. Thats what my mother in law did. And make sure you have ID, proof of address, termination letter, and last 3 paystubs at minimum. Send MORE documents than they ask for!!! Its better to overwhelming them with proof than not have enough.

Anyone here ever try going in person to one of the ny unemployment offices? I heard theres one in Brooklyn that has spanish speaking staff. Might be faster than trying to call.

•Dont waste ur time. I went 2 the office in Manhattan and waited 4 HOURS just to be told they cant help with claims & I need 2 call the same number I've been calling 4ever 🤬

•Yeah the in-person offices are basically useless now. They just direct you back to the phone system or website. Total waste of time.

Listen up! As someone who works with immigrant communities on benefits issues, here's what you need to know about NY unemployment documentation requirements: For non-English speakers facing documentation issues, you need to be VERY thorough. The system is not designed well for ESL claimants. 1. Identity verification: Photo ID + Social Security Card + birth certificate if available 2. Work authorization: If not a citizen, include all work permit documentation 3. Employment history: ALL pay stubs if possible (at least one from each month worked), W-2s from ALL relevant years, official termination letter (on company letterhead is best) 4. Contact information for previous employer including supervisor name/number 5. Bank information for direct deposit setup IF YOU CAN'T GET THROUGH ON PHONE: Try claimyr.com - many of my clients have used them successfully to connect with agents, especially when language barriers are involved. They'll wait on hold and connect you with a real person. Also, you have the legal right to request communications in Spanish! When you do connect with someone, immediately ask them to note in your account that all communications should be in Spanish going forward. Don't miss that deadline - send what you have now and then supplement if needed!

•Thank you for such detailed information! I didn't know we could officially request Spanish communications. Will definitely check out that service too since we're running out of time.

•This should be pinned at the top. So helpful. The system is ridiculous for non-English speakers.

•I second the recommendation for Claimyr. After 2 weeks of failed attempts myself, I got through in one day with them. Worth every penny to get my benefits flowing again.

New York unemployment department is straight trash for non-english speakers. My mom had same issue and we had to hire a interpreter to help with phone calls! Such BS that they dont have proper spanish services considering how many spanish speakers live in NY.

•💯💯💯 The system is designed to make people give up. They should have way more bilingual agents considering the demographics of NY

•Sadly, a lot of government programs deliberately make it hard to access benefits. They're counting on people giving up so they don't have to pay out.

Whats messed up is that by law they supposed to offer services in spanish. My dad had same problem last yr. He finally got thru by having me on 3way call to translate. But we waited like 2 hrs on hold.

•I waited 3.5 hours on Spanish line last week only to get disconnected right when someone picked up. I almost threw my phone at the wall.

if u have a nyc id card make sure to include that too! also the last txt message or email that they sent - translate it with google translate so u know exactly what docs they asking for. sometimes they want specific things.

yall are all talking about calling and stuff but OP needs to SUBMIT DOCUMENTS NOW before deadline. worry about calling later. just upload everything - ID, SS card, all paystubs you have, w2's, any letters from employer. better to send too much than not enough

•You're right! We're submitting everything we can find tonight. I'm still hoping to talk to someone too since we're confused about why they said insufficient work history when she worked steadily for 2 years.

•they probly just need more proof. happens all the time. system is designed to frustrate people into giving up. dont let them win!

ny unemployment website is absolute garbo with translations. Try using the Chrome browser which has better translation features built in, or use the Microsoft Edge translator which sometimes works better for forms.

I had 2 use Claimyr last month when I couldn't get anyone on phone for weeks. Got connected to a spanish agent in like 30 min after trying myself for days. My benefits started coming 2 days later! Worth checking out claimyr.com

•another vote for claimyr - talking to a live agent makes all the difference

Hot tip: if the website isn't working right, try using it between 11pm-6am when less people are on. The translation features work better when the system isn't overloaded.
