How to contact NY unemployment about document upload deadline - is it too late?
I got an email from NY unemployment asking to upload some documents but I completely forgot about it until now. I'm freaking out because I don't know if I missed the deadline or if I can still submit them. Does anyone know how I can contact someone directly to ask about this? The automated system is useless and I really need to know if my benefits will be affected. How long do we typically have to respond to these document requests? Really hoping it's not too late...

I think you have like 7 days to upload docs after they send the request. At least that's what happened with me last month. Just log in to your account and check if the portal still allows uploads!

•Thanks, I just checked my portal and the upload option is still there! But I'm still nervous about being late. Do you know if they penalize you for uploading after the deadline?

Those document requests usually give you 10 business days to respond, which is about 2 weeks calendar time. Check the email carefully for the exact deadline. If you're past it, you should call NYSDOL immediately to explain the situation before they take any action on your claim.

•Thank you! The email was from about 9 days ago, so maybe I'm still within the timeframe. I'll upload the documents right away. Really appreciate the help!

If you need to speak with an actual agent (which I recommend in your situation), don't waste days trying to get through on the regular phone line. I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) last week when I had a similar issue with missing documents. They got me connected to an agent in about 15 minutes instead of spending days redialing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent I spoke with was able to notate my account that I was submitting late due to confusion about the deadline, which protected my benefits from being interrupted.

•Oh wow, I didn't know something like that existed. I've been trying to call all morning with no luck. I might try this if I can't get through today. Did they give you any trouble about submitting documents late?

•No trouble at all! The agent just made a note in my file about the reason for the delay. They said it happens all the time and as long as you're making a good faith effort to comply, they're usually understanding. Just make sure you have your documents ready to upload while on the call.

DO NOT WAIT!!! Upload whatever you have RIGHT NOW even if its not perfect! They can SHUT OFF your benefits with NO WARNING if you miss document deadlines!!! I learned this the HARD WAY last quarter and had to wait THREE WEEKS to get my benefits back after missing a stupid deadline by 2 days. The system is DESIGNED to make people fail. Call them IMMEDIATELY after uploading!

•Omg that's terrifying! I'm uploading everything right now. Did you have to start your claim all over again or did they just temporarily pause it?

•They just suspended payments until I got through to someone and explained. Then it took another week for them to "process" my explanation. Total nightmare. Just upload everything ASAP and document EVERYTHING - take screenshots of your uploads with timestamps!!!

This happened to me a few months back. Forgot all about the documents and remembered 2 weeks later. I just uploaded them anyway and continued to certify each week. My payments kept coming without interruption. Maybe I got lucky idk

I work in the unemployment claims field (though not for NYSDOL specifically). Here's what you need to know: 1. Document requests typically have a 10-business-day deadline, but the system usually allows submissions for 3-5 days after that deadline 2. If you're within that window, upload immediately and then call to explain. Most agents can add a note to your file that you complied late but in good faith. 3. If you're beyond the extended window (15+ days), the system may have already flagged your account for compliance review. In that case, you need to speak with an agent directly and possibly file an official extension request. 4. Always keep copies of everything you upload, along with confirmation screens. 5. Continue certifying weekly even if there's an issue with your documents - this preserves your claim weeks even if payments are temporarily suspended. Hope this helps!

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'm definitely still within the 15-day window (it's been 9 days), so I'll upload everything now and try to call them tomorrow morning. Really appreciate the detailed advice!

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone at unemployment! For anyone who might have the same issue in the future - I uploaded my documents (though I was late) and then called using the Claimyr service that someone mentioned below. Got through to an agent who was actually really understanding. She put a note on my account about the late submission and assured me my benefits won't be interrupted. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

•Thanks for updating us. This is good information for others who might face similar situations. Always good to hear when things work out well with NYSDOL since we hear so many negative stories.
