How long after priority status on NY unemployment do payments actually start?
So my unemployment claim got flagged for ID verification back in July. After weeks of sending in all my documents and making countless phone calls, I finally got through to someone last week who told me my claim was being moved to 'priority status' whatever that means. They said I should see payments soon but didn't give me any timeframe. It's been 6 days now and still nothing in my account. My rent is due next week and I'm getting really nervous. Has anyone else had their claim put on priority? How long did it take before you actually saw any money? I'm going crazy checking my account every few hours.

I was told my claim was priority back in August and it took exactly 9 days before I saw the money hit my account. But I know someone else who waited almost 3 weeks after being told the same thing. I think it really depends on what the actual issue is with your claim. Mine was just ID verification but if you have other issues it might take longer. Have you checked your payment history on the website?

•Yeah I've been checking the payment history tab obsessively but it still shows nothing. Mine is also just ID verification as far as I know. 9 days seems tolerable but 3 weeks would be devastating!

•word of advice - dont just check payment history. also check your messages in the system. sometimes they send you messages asking for additional stuff without telling u and the clock doesn't start til u respond

•Thanks for the tip! Just checked my messages and there's nothing new there. Guess I just have to keep waiting 😩

I was in the exact same boat last month! Tried calling for weeks with no luck. Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human at unemployment in less than an hour. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast. Couldn't believe how quickly things moved once I actually talked to someone instead of waiting for the "priority" process. They even have this video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•this sounds like an ad... does this actually work? I've tried so many "tricks" to get through

•Not an ad I swear lol. I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after waiting 2 months. It actually worked for me - they call and wait on hold for you then connect you when a real person picks up.

•Is it safe tho? Do they need access to your personal info or anything?

Zoe Papadakis
•They don't need any of your claim info or personal stuff. They just do the calling part and then connect you when someone answers. Then you talk directly to unemployment yourself.

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch that I found. It's just a calling service. They don't fix your claim or anything - they just get you past the impossible hold times so you can actually talk to someone who CAN fix your claim.

priority status is a joke tbh. they told me the same thing in june and i didnt see a penny for 5 weeks. and then when i finally did get paid they only gave me like half of what i was owed. had to call AGAIN to get the rest of my backpay. the whole system is a mess

My experience with priority status was actually pretty good. Got told my claim was prioritized on a Tuesday and saw payment the following Monday. So about 6 business days. The key is to keep checking your payment history AND your messages in case they need more info from you. Hope yours comes through soon!

•That's encouraging to hear! Did they release all your backpay at once or just start the weekly payments going forward?

•They released everything at once for me. It was a nice fat deposit lol. But I've heard they sometimes split it up if it's a really large amount.

Here's what you need to know about "priority status" with NY unemployment (from someone who works adjacent to the system): What priority actually means: Your claim has been flagged for expedited review by a specialized team. This SHOULD mean 7-10 business days, but backlogs can extend this. What affects timing: - Complexity of your issue (simple ID verification is faster than multi-issue claims) - Current backlog (end of month is usually worse) - Whether additional information is needed - If there are any secondary flags on your account What you should do: 1. Check both payment history AND messages daily 2. If it's been more than 10 business days, you need to speak with someone again 3. Document every interaction with timestamps and agent names if possible If you absolutely need to speak with someone quickly, I recommend using claimyr.com - they'll get you past the phone queue nightmare so you can actually talk to someone who can check your status. Many of my clients have had success with them when traditional methods failed. Hope this helps clarify what's actually happening behind the scenes!

•This is incredibly helpful info, thank you! When you say "end of month is usually worse" - does that mean I might be waiting longer since we're approaching month-end now?

•Unfortunately yes - end of month tends to be higher volume for the processors. But ID verification is one of the more straightforward issues, so you still might get lucky. If you hit the 10 business day mark without movement, definitely try to get someone on the phone again.

Quick tip that worked for me: after they put me on "priority" I also reached out to my state assembly person's office. Their constituent services actually called unemployment on my behalf and my payment showed up 2 days later. Worth a try if you're desperate.

•That's smart! Do you just google your local assembly person and call their office?

Sofia Hernandez
•Yep! Just google "NY state assembly person [your neighborhood]" and their office info should come up. Ask for constituent services and explain your situation. They deal with unemployment issues all the time.

•I second this! My assemblywoman's office was super helpful when I was stuck in unemployment hell last fall.

Have you tried calling again? Sometimes the "priority" flag doesn't actually get put on your account even when they say it does. Don't trust what they tell you - always follow up.

The term "priority status" is basically meaningless with ny unemployment. It could be tomorrow, could be next month. I had better luck getting my claim moving by using claimyr.com to get through to a tier 2 agent who could actually help instead of just telling me to wait.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS?

•It worked for me! After trying to call for weeks and getting nowhere. You pay them to wait on hold and then they call you when they get an agent. Saved me hours of hold music hell.

•hmm ok might have to try this. sick of waiting on hold just to get disconnected after an hour 🤦♂️

Don't stress too much (easier said than done, I know). Priority usually means 5-10 business days but can be longer depending on their workload. Do you have access to your payment history page? That's where you'll see it first before it hits your bank account.

Yuki Yamamoto
•Yeah I can see the payment history page but it's still empty. I've been checking it like 10 times a day lol. Trying not to stress but rent is due soon!

why is ny unemployment so broken??? in other states people get their money in like 2-3 weeks max. here we gotta wait months and beg them to look at our claims smh

•its cuz their system is from like 1980 running on ancient computers. they never upgraded even after all the covid issues exposed how bad it was

I was told my claim was priority back in May, and after 2 weeks of nothing, I called and they said there was no priority flag on my account! The first rep had lied just to get me off the phone. Make sure you call back and confirm it's actually been marked priority.

Yuki Yamamoto
•OMG that's infuriating! I'll definitely call back to confirm. Did you eventually get it sorted out?

QuantumQuest
•Yeah but only after I got through to a tier 2 specialist who actually knew what they were doing. The regular phone reps just read scripts and barely have access to do anything. Had to use claimyr.com to finally get through to someone useful after weeks of trying.
